Based on the premise that many people in today's society have an imbalance in their autonomic nervous system that highly favours the sympathetic responses (fight or flight) over the parasympathetic (rest and regeneration), this book offers a protocol for moving out of sympathetic dominance (SD). In simple terms, SD is such things as stress, anxiety, the inability to relax, sleep disturbance etc. In other words, the sympathetic system is dominating the parasympathetic.

The notion is that on-going sympathetic dominance leads to multiple subclinical symptoms (around adrenal fatigue, digestion issues etc) which given enough time will evolve into clinical conditions.

The book is written by an chiropractor, but offers a holistic approach that covers sensory input, supplementation, posture, diet, meditation, chiropractic, exercise and lifestyle factors.

I know what it's like to have subclinical symptoms, having hit the wall of burnout a couple of years ago. I've had all kinds of tests, from simple blood tests to a cranial MRI, and am immensely thankful that all these tests showed nothing wrong with me in the pathological or clinical sense. But that doesn't mean I've lived without symptoms.

The story Wayne Todd tells in this book fits with my own experience to the degree that I'm keen to implement his strategies - some of which I was already practising prior to reading the book and some which I've picked up as a result of the book.

Even though the book is about 75% of the way through before it moves from describing the problem into the proposed solution, all the background is quite interesting and informative (if not a little repetitive).

Interesting stuff that has help with the overall picture of a journey towards wellness.

For the last month I have suffered debilitating migraines. I have had two hemiplegic migraines that mimic stroke symptoms. I’ve had four vasovegal seizures, one lasting for an hour of uncontrollably shaking. I’ve sought answers in brain MRI, CT scan, X-rays, blood tests, hospital, doctors, chinese medicine, massages, and chiropractic.

Alongside the unbearable neurological pain had been neurosenstivities - to light (including screens), sound, food, needles, you name it. Treatments that should have helped led to adverse reactions because of the tension in my body.

No traditional medicine route helped, because the issues were sub clinical. Only holistic, integrated medical professionals were able to identify that I had been in a perpetual sympathetic dominance, meaning my body was “on edge”, in “fight or flight mode”, and prioritising survival mode as a result of prolonged stress.

The result? Systemic issues. Body systems breaking down and not working how they were meant to. Sleepless nights. Digestive, reproductive and circulatory issues. Allergies/intolerances. Hives, swelling, inflammation, and the inability to swallow food normally due to throat swelling.

My chiropractor allowed me to borrow this book from him and I instantly started implementing the SD protocol to wind down. Truly a life saver protocol on the necessity of a physical, chemical and emotional balance in our bodies for wellbeing. For the first time in a month, I have been migraine free! Truly miraculous.

I am now more informed and equipped on how to return to a parasympathetic state. I am recommending this to everyone because I don’t want anyone else to tip into sympathetic dominance like I have you, because it is a living nightmare.

Dr Todd does a good job of describing sympathetic dominance and how you can help calm the system down. It did read a bit like one size fits all treatment and as so many things can be impacted it sounds like it includes many more people than would actually be in SD. I also found the book to articulate what I already knew rather than being a book that imparts a lot of new information.
Read the book with a critical/analytical mind.
