As the official companion book to 150th anniversary of the Canada's birth, this guide is also the companion to the Guide to the National Parks of Canada, 2nd Edition, celebrating the historic sites that are key in building the story of Canada. This guideshowcases 236 national historic sites of Parks Canada and gives visitors fact-packed text that features history, natural history, and must-see elements and events at each place. Great visuals and poetic insight into the lands and events reveal how Canada grew into the creative, thriving, and proudly independent nation it is today. Each entry gives the site's unique story and how it contributes to the greater story of Canada.
The National Geographic Society (NGS), headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States, is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations in the world. Founded in 1888, its interests include geography, archaeology, and natural science, the promotion of environmental and historical conservation, and the study of world culture and history. The National Geographic Society's logo is a yellow portrait frame—rectangular in shape—which appears on the margins surrounding the front covers of its magazines and as its television channel logo. Through National Geographic Partners (a joint venture with The Walt Disney Company), the Society operates the magazine, TV channels, a website, worldwide events, and other media operations.
There was so many "forts" and British history. I did appreciate the note about Christi Belcourt's stain glass up at Parliament Hill. There could have been more Indigenous historic spots included and an Indigenous voice or perspective could be felt in some passages but in others, more at the beginning-mid part, it seemed like there may not have been Indigenous support for editing or authoring.
I would have liked to see more multi-cultural historic and contemporary sites included as well - and always, more Indigenous voice throughout would have been better representative.
There were some local or semi-local spots in ever knew about and am looking forward to exploring.
I was confused about the Victoria Memorial Museum - realised that it's the same thing as the Canadian Museum of Nature which is not indicated. I had to google it.
An excellent guide to the historic sites of Canada - but I need to own my own copy not rely on the borrowed one from the library! Excellent pictures and historical information.
Purchased this guide while traveling in Western Canada. I was encouraged to see how many of the sites we have visited over the years. Yet, I discovered so many more that I would love to visit on future travels. Just reading the book offers an excellent Canadian history lesson. Will keep this on my travel bookcase to use during trip planning.
A very useful guide to National Historic Sites! It is one of my goals to visit every NHS site that has a staff, and as many possible that are just plaques or remains. This book is really making it easy to plan which ones to see, when, and why! My only wish is that there was a better presence of maps, particularly with multiple sites on the insert/page.
