The illustrations are wonderful on this manga. I picked it up for those alone, not knowing the artist or story. The format really threw me off. It was in 4koma (formatted as a series of four vertically-stacked panels) I expected a regular Manga. They reminded me of the Sunday Comics. They were fun, some a little dirty, and quick to read, great for reading while waiting for your coffee, tea, bus... Quick little escape reads. I prefer full manga for more story and character development, but enjoyed looking at this new to me format.
I just couldn't resist this manga when I spotted it, I had to order it. And after reading, I am definitely glad I did.
Sure, there were a few things here and there that weren't too good. For instance the translation seemed wonky at best. Some sentences didn't make sense (grammatically). Maybe it was also due to the translation that at times I lost where I was in the story. Sometimes x would happen and then suddenly y popped up.
I was hoping for more school stories, and less of that crappy laboratory stuff. Those parts were just terrible, and I found myself quickly reading them to get to the school stuff again. The school stuff was mostly hilarious, especially with how the characters interact.
Luka is of course the fabulous popular girl who loves Miku a bit too much (almost bordering on creepy). I laughed so hard when people died due to nose-bleeding because Luka winked or even just looked at them. :P Eh, at least they died in a happy way. Then there is Rin, who is, as expected, totally overprotective over her twin brother Len. It was quite hilarious to see her go in frenzy mode when someone dared to flirt with her precious brother. Kaito and Meiko are there as sempai/teachers, and it was definitely a job for them. Though it was funny to see how much they differ in teaching. We also have a weird girl named Anna who is the principal and likes to wear sexy clothes (really, no clue why). Lastly we have the main girl, Hatsune (or Hachune as some might call her, even in this book *rolls eyes*). She is a sweet girl, but totally hopeless at school. One wonders how she even got accepted to the school. It was quite funny when we found out why Hatsune sucked so much at lessons (I can say I didn't expect that). It was quite fun to see Teto pop up as well. She isn't a vocaloid, but an Utauloid so I was surprised to see her. If anything I would have expected IA to pop up in the mix.
The manga is 4koma, which I didn't entirely expect, I was thinking it would just be normal manga style, but eh, 4koma works as well, even if, for some reason, it takes me longer to read that format.
I wouldn't mind another manga with vocaloid + school. It is a mix that works pretty well.
The art to this one was cute, and funny. It really fit the vocaloids, but also the format of the manga (4koma).
I would recommend this one. Vocaloid lover or not, I am sure people will quite like this one!
I got an ARC of this through Edelweiss, all opinions are my own.
I'm not that familiar with Miku and her friends but since I enjoy the music they make I decided to give Mikubon a go. It follows two different story lines: Miku as the assistant of a professor and all the weird stuff she does with his inventions and Miku as a student at St. Diva Academy for Vocaloids.
The story is told in a yonkoma format (so a four panel comic read from right to left, from top to bottom). I'm in general not crazy about this format because in most manga it means that after the 4 panels the story is done. However in this volume, multiple pages were dedicated to the same story. So it read almost like a regular manga but in a yonkoma format. I liked that they decided to go with that, it made the story more enjoyable because we could explore it a bit more. The art style is also very cute. The characters don't look like they do on the cover, they are more chibi like. Look up some Vocaloid nendoroids and you get a good image of how they look.
The parts in which Miku is the assistant of a professor is probably my favourite because I loved seeing what sort of silly stuff she does with it. I also liked the parts in which Miku is a student at St. Diva Academy for Vocaloids however I felt a bit sad that it only focused on general school stuff and not on specific Vocaloid things. Since she is going to a school for Vocaloids I was hoping to see a bit more of that. However I did really enjoy seeing some of the other Vocaloids walking around and interacting. It would have been even better if my favourite Vocaloid Gummi had been in it too...
Finally, some of the translations seemed to be off. There were a couple of spelling/grammar mistakes and I felt like there were 2 or 3 sentences that just made no sense as a reply to stuff that had been said earlier in a panel.
So that is why I gave it 4 stars. I really enjoyed it and I would love to see more of Miku and friends in either manga or anime format.
I knew this was a 4-koma, and I expected silly.. But not to this extent. This book is random. Luke, really random. The Hatchune Miku parts pop out of nowhere, and make no sense. The regular parts are ok, but there's some OOC stuff. Luka seems horribly OOC, I never figured Luka to be some creepy stalker/into girls. She's paired up with Gakupo or Kaito half of the time, and other than the occasional video, she's usually straight. I wouldn't care if there was any other indication in other comics/most videos, but the stalker lesbian thing is out of nowhere. This was so inexpensive that I don't care enough to sell it, but it isn't great. Don't buy this, rent it or get it used. It isn't worth it. Buy Acute, Bad End Night, the anthology, or Rin-Chan Now instead.
It's a cute thing for Vocaloid fans. The 4Koma format has been done much better, though. If this had a completely-original cast, there'd be nothing notable about it.
I received this copy from Dark Horse Manga through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Let's go :D
*~.Manga Analysis.~* Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader :)
This manga was so insanely cute! I admit that I expected a full adventure in this one shot and got several short stories in Japanese comics style, but I’m not complaining much, haha! I loved the cute and cool art, the way the mangaka portrayed all Vocaloid characters and the humor was insanely good =D Four beautiful stars!
As we have several short stories loosely connected inside the volume, with main focus on Miku, of course, I’m going straight to the point of plot, characters and art /o/
It was very fun to read about Miku’s adventures in St. Diva Academy for Vocaloids – the mangaka just knew how to picture each character’s stereotype and turn it into something fitting for the adventure and the place. Luka, for example, is a huge diva on the school and never allows anyone to forget it – in the fan base, she’s also know as a bit of a snub with a good heart.
Miku herself was portrayed as a nice and almost naïve girl, the epitome of the shoujo (manga especially written for young female readers) genre main character. She counts on her friends to keep up with school and life in general, but also runs to their aid when necessary. In my head, Miku used to be the leader show off, as she is the main vocaloid to this day, so it was good to see another side of her for a change =D
The characters are mainly draw as ‘chibis’ – small, cute versions of the full draw character. I’ll show it bellow for those not used to the Japanese wording, haha! While I love chibis and the mangaka did some of the cutest ever versions of the Vocaloid characters that I have ever seen, it was a nice surprise to see that they could also kick ass at full drawings, like the cover, inner illustrations and some chapter openers ;D
*~.Cover Analysis.~*
LOVE, LOVE, LOOOOOOOOOVE this cover! Miku definitely is the star of this volume and the bright happy colors of both her and the writings are totally fitting. Also, I loved how Rin looks clueless on the corner, haha! SO CUTE, OMG!

Overall, if you are a fan of Vocaloid characters like me, short stories and an adorable art in your mangas, pick up this title! Thank you so much for reading this review! Also, thanks so much again to Dark House Manga for my review copy =D
Very cute, neat little twists on the characters that are established right from the get go. I liked the translation and generally had a lot of fun reading it! The art is super cute too, very Nendoroid in style.
If you're a fan of vocaloids, 4-panel manga, and comedy manga I say grab it!
I bought this book because I'm a big Vocaloid fan. As a casual manga reader, there's not much this title has to offer. It shows the famous Vocaloids in a comedic, high school setting, where sexual innuendos know no bounds. (I was not able to figure out the purpose of the principal, amid her kinky outfits.) It's nice to put personality into 3D divas, but I don't see this as something of value to add into any typical manga collection. Easily forgettable. The compilation of short stories were only good enough for a chuckle. However, if you like Miku & the Vocaloids, this is a good, cheap add to your collection.
Mikubon is a book about a Japanese singer, her name is Hatsune Miku. Hatsune Miku's friends are named Luka,Kaito,Rin,Len and Meiko. Kaito is trying to help miku win the card game, she tries so hard but miku can't win. She's really upset about it. She can't win a game of cards. Kaito is a boy with dark blue hair who likes to have fun. Meiko is a girl with short brown hair she is pretty cool. Luka is a girl with long pink hair and she's really fun. Rin and Len are twins len is really funny like kaito and rin is really nice and she's really cool. Mikubon is by Ontama, ontama is a japanese lady author that found an interest in Hatsune Miku.
You should read this book if you like the Japanese culture. I also recomend this book to kids because it's perfect for kids who like cartoons and anime. If i didn't know about Mikubon i would really want to find out where to get it and i would read it. Miku has some SUPER popular songs in Japan if you went to Japan you would see there's huge billboards with Miku on them. Mikubon is a really funny book.
She even has concerts and she's a hologram. Millions of people come to see her and sometimes her friends sing. If you don't understand japanese but you like there culture then read this book. I like this book because i've always liked Hatsune Miku and listened to her songs.
