THE LATEST NOVEL IN THE BESTSELLING DYSTOPIAN SCIENCE FICTION SERIES THE TUBE RIDERS.
There's gone and then there's London-gone ....
Marta Banks and her Tube Riders may have fled, but they left behind a city on the brink of collapse. In the violent wasteland of London Greater Urban Area, former Tube Rider David Silverwood tries to reunite the old members of the gang to make one last stand against the government. In his way is Dreggo, once a member of a rival gang but now the Governor's right hand, and Lindon, a member of the criminal stronghold known as the Tank, who is struggling with issues of loyalty towards revolution, the people protected by his organisation, and his dying girlfriend, Cah.
Revisiting London in the period between Tube Riders: Exile and Tube Riders: Revenge, In the Shadow of London is a stunning addition to Chris Ward's Tube Riders series.
Really enjoyed book 4 with other tube riders that rode with Marta in the early days. This shows their life prior to the Revenge. It also expands on Frank and Lindon's characters.
Set in the not too distant future, The Tube Riders books are about a group of youngsters who play a dangerous game riding on the outside of Tube Trains. The first 3 books tells the Story of Marta Banks and her friends as they escape from London and run from it's ruthless ruler The Governor and his half-human, deadly Huntsman.
Book 4 of the series returns to London as it's setting. Rumours of the Tube Riders' successes are being whispered by the people left behind and the seeds of revolution are being sown. The Huntsman have been instructed to scour the underground stations for any sign of remaining Tube Riders, even those who no longer ride the trains.
Mika, a government scientist, tries to treat the Huntsman humanely, but is shocked to find that one of the scents they have picked up on belongs to her younger sister Airie.
David, a former Tube Rider, realises he is being tracked by the Huntsman and attempts to warn his former love Raine placing both her and her child in danger.
Droggo fresh from the failure of catching Marta Banks and more ruthless than ever, set out to find the miscreants who threaten the safety of the Governor. However, she has a problem, her Huntsman are part human. And despite all attempts to wipe their memories of their former lives, they are beginning to remember what life was like for them before.
Book 4 has seemed a long time coming but it was certainly worth the wait. I had felt that book 3 had lost a little of the momentum of the first two books, but In the Shadow of London picked up the pace again returning the reader to familiar settings.
This is one of the best dystopian novels I have read in a long time. It is far darker than the Divergent and Maze Runner series and I would dearly love to see this made into a film (or 4)
In a London that has been destroyed, fenced in and left to its own destruction, the tube riders are just a myth, a fable for others to keep hope. David Silverwood was once a tube rider and is still in London. David is no longer a child and sees the destruction each day of his city, the one he does not want to call home unless the darkness ends. He now must look after Cah who is dying and he does not truly know why but he loves her more than he will ever love himself. The underground resistance is is starting to cause a major scene with the authorities over London but at top of those authorities is Dreggo, who is considered the enemy because of her former affiliation with another group that jumped the tubes. Dreggo is not her original self she is more powerful and deadlier than most. She has her wants and needs. By accident David and his new found friend bring Marta Banks and the Tube Riders back into the spotlight and form an alliance built on that belief. Now they are all wanted by everyone. On the run and in need of some serious help its all about who can be trusted if anyone? The tube riders trilogy allows you to grow up with the tube riders. From book one to this one Book 4, Each character becomes more real and brings you into their world. Great read, Great characters and a story that will hold you until the end. Chris Ward has brought a new story to life and the characters are truly believable!
