I really liked the premise behind this book. I wanted to like it. I did.

The characters while they were believable and real at first, the more I read the more I found myself rolling my eyes at the absurdity. I just can't believe that a straight man would be so okay with being with a man without a moment of hesitation or though of 'OMG what am I doing'. Sure, his girlfriend is a total waste of space, but that doesn't mean he'd automatically be okay with being gay. There is a lot that comes with being gay that was totally missed with this book. Not to mention the fact that he is cheating on his girlfriend and just doesn't care. Don't care that she is mean, doesn't make it okay in my world. Cheating is cheating.

Then there is the grammar issues. Things like using steel instead of steal, there instead of their, trill instead of thrill, since instead of sense, were instead of we're, petition instead of partition, bit instead of bite, budge instead of bulge, and then there was my personal favorite strait instead of straight (and that's only a few). Not to mention run ons and many, many other little errors that filled the book. If these had been fixed, the book might have rated higher for me, however, the stop in flow to figure out what the words were supposed to be or what the sentences were trying to say really made it quite hard to get through.

And it's the Twenty-First Century now, not the Twentieth.

Please let me note that I don't mean to be overly harsh or critical, but instead to give my PERSONAL opinion on the book. This is in fact my only one star rating that I've left. I feel that it is important to show the internal war/dialogue/challenges that happen when going from being straight man to being a gay or bisexual man. That isn't an easy thing to go through and while I understand this was a short, sexy read, that in my opinion was just glossed over and too unrealistic for me.

I do hope that Ms. Rose can take the criticism I've given for what it is, a personal view on what I think didn't work and what could've been fixed to make the book better.

I hope that other readers will use the 'look inside' feature amazon has to get a taste of the book for themselves.

I received a free copy of this book to read for Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.

I loved....loved....loved this book. The main characters are Troy and Mikah.

It starts out with Troy (a straight man) deciding it is time to turn his life around to what it was like when he was in school. Since being out of school he has put on some weight and lost his athletic build and he is wants to feel desirable again for his girlfriend Emily.

Mikah is the trainer he meets and ends up with when he starts working out at the gym. Mikah is gay but he is not out at work and for the first couple of months he is not out to Troy either.

Alissa Rose takes us through what it is like for one man to figure out he desires another man and also what it is like for both to come out.

Alissa did an amazing job with this book. I am so glad that I read this book. It may be a short story but it was definitely worth the read. I had to take breaks while reading it to tend to my children but I found that I could not wait to be able to get back to the book to see what was going to happen next.

Great read.... Looking forward to reading more by Alissa Rose

*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***

Troy has been in a relationship with his girlfriend since high school and while at first they worked great, the spark seems to have disappeared. Thinking that him being slightly overweight might be the problem, Troy decides to join the local gym. There he meets Mikah and they become friends. What he didn't expect was that he would feel attracted to his new friend.

The book is enjoyable, for the most part. It drags a bit on some parts and then it's too rushed in others, but the premise was good. Troy and Mikah are very likable and they seemed good together. I would've liked to see them as a couple a bit more than we did, though.

I'm aware this is an ARC copy, but I hope some of the grammar/spelling issues I found were fixed before posting the book to any retailer, since they can be a tad jarring.

Review:

Training Him is one of those books that you can read in one sitting. You pick it up, start it, and before you know it the book is finished. There is a smile on your face because, yes this is a good book.
The plot is pretty simple. Troy is disgusted with himself. He has been living with his high school sweetheart. Their relationship has turned from lovers to roommates. His once athletic built has turned soft and flabby. He knows he has to do something to put the spark back into his relationship and make his girl fall back in love with him. Time to hit the gym. What’s this? The gym has Mikah. A godlike man. Yes a man. Why is Troy so attracted to him?
The chemistry in this book will make your temperature rise. Troy and Mikah are perfect together.
The pacing is quick, it has to be with only 77 pages from start to finish.
The ending is perfect, but I wish that the story didn’t end. I want to go work out with these two.

I really loved the synopsis of this book and overall I did enjoy it.

Troy has been in a relationship with his school sweetheart for a number of years but now they are reaching their mid-twenties, the once flush of passion has slowly dwindled to nothing. They are more like ships passing in the night rather than the hot lovers they used to be. Feeling a need to start taking better care of himself and get his physique back to that it was when he did sports, he plucks up the courage to join a local gym. It was whilst sitting outside trying to push himself to go in that he first meets Mikah.

Mikah is one of the fitness club personal trainers and when he sees the man sitting in the car, he approaches him to give him the boost he needs to step inside. Both are surprised later to find out that Mikah has been assigned to Troy as his trainer.

Over the weeks the pair strike up a friendship but it’s when Mikah reveals his personal side and his problems with his boyfriend that Troy finds himself thinking of, and looking at Mikah in a new light.

I instantly did like both Troy and Mikah. However when they test out the change in their relationship I did expect Troy to have more misgivings and concerns for how his feelings had changed and how he was suddenly lusting after a man. It didn’t pan out if this was a GFY or if Troy was actually bisexual. There were also a couple of typos and grammar errors which I usually don’t mention in my reviews but in this instance it did irk me a little.

Overall though it was a quick, sexy and enjoyable read. It could actually have been a five star if a little longer which would have enabled the development of the intensity of the passionate pair and also the soul searching that I feel Troy would have gone through. 3.75 stars

~~~~~~~~~~~~SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW...READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!~~~~~~~~~I WILL NOT CHANGE IT!
K so... Troy's wife or girlfriend or whatever she is.... is pretty awful...I don't blame Troy for eventually gettin shot of her, but before he starts going to the gym and stuff, the way he tries unsuccessfully to sleep with her is kind of gross... if my husband or boyfriend called me fat and treated me like I was gross, I wouldn't just keep trying, I'd kick his A to the curb and tell em to eat my fat a $ $!
Then Mikah, seems great, really nice guy... he trains Troy at the gym he decided to sign up for. He's in the closet at work, in a relationship with a man that I got the impression was flamboyant and obviously gay but apparently he got caught by Mikah with another woman, was I the only one who thought for sure it would have been Troy's wife? Cuz, she seemed like the one to cheat.
Troy, after a dream about Mikah, jumped in the gay pool, feet first.Didn't question it, didn't have a problem, he just went from 0-60 immediately! And while that probably happens all the time, it just didn't seem realistic to me. Never had a gay thought before but within hours your not only puttin someone in your mouth and swallowing you're also bottoming like a champ?
THEN, Mikah said he didn't want to be with someone who might only be experimenting with being gay, he didn't want to be forced into the closet, but he WAS in the closet.... at work at least, the one place where he and Troy were together most. I didn't get that....
I dunno... am I being too harsh? It just didn't feel real to me.
The writing was great though, the blurb was great, I just had a hard time finding the story believable.
An interesting story about a straight man, Troy, whose relationship with his high school sweetheart is in the doldrums. They're no longer in high school and the travails of being adults have gotten in the way. She works late shifts at a bar and he is a legal clerk? or something like that. Their sex life is non-existent and he's become a slob.
So he decides to sign up to a gym and acquire a trainer to get back into shape. The first day at the gym he nearly bottles it but Mikah comes to his rescue and persuades him to walk in and give it a try. It turns out Mikah is a fitness trainer and Troy gets assigned to him. Over a period of time the two of them become training buddies and good friends. It turns out that Mikah is gay and when his relationship with another man deteriorates, Troy is there to prop him up and the two of them hit a gay bar together. At the end of the night Troy realises he feels something for Mikah more than just being buddies. Will Troy give into his feelings for Mikah?
This is where the story really kicks off for me. I bought into the premise of a straight man finding a gay man attractive and falling for him. I believe there are many bisexual people out there and it's a matter of opportunity really as to whether they get to explore those options. So this wasn't a problem for me. However, I expected Troy to have a bit more reservation about jumping into the sexual relationship with another man for the first time. There didn't seem to be any internal conflict. It just kind of happened.
As I said already, this is still interesting and a quick read so something to read when you're waiting for an appointment.
A Nice and Easy, Short and Sweet m/m, GFY
Training Him is the 1st book by Alissa I have read and it is also her 1st m/m read
Training Him was and enjoyable read...
I had a few problems with it but overall it was a nice short book
This book has a great blurb that really grips you
For me the story just didn't hit all the right marks
PROBLEMS ~ The story/plot was a great one that could of certainly been an amazing book... But I found certain part a bit unbelievable!!!
I know it is fiction... But I prefer my books where I can imagine them acting out in my head and so I can imagine them being real
I Love Mikah... The hot, sexy, buff, gay guy... He is just a really nice guy
Troy, hmm.... I kinda liked him, but found they way he treated his GF a bit shitty!!!
Also another huge problem for me was the fact that as soon as Troy decided to act on his attraction to Mikah he was full steam ahead !!!! I mean come on!!!! He has been straight all his life... I though it would of been better if he had gone into the sexual stuff with a little more nerves or at least eased into it...
But I know it's a short book and everything has fit... So you can't really drag it out when the book is only a short story
Other than a few problems I really did enjoy Training Him... I would of loved for it to be a full length story
Troy is in a loveless relationship with his high school sweetheart, and has been for a while now. As he looks in the mirror he is disgusted by what he sees. The ultimate jock back in high School, now at only 23 he is pudgy in the middle. He decides to join his local gym to get back into shape, and try spark some life back into his love life. He meets his new trainer at the gym, Mikah. Mikah is built like a god. He helps Troy to start getting back into shape, and along the way they become close friends. What Troy doesn't expect is the spark of attraction he finds himself feeling for Mikah.
This book was good and easy read. I loved the two main characters. They were both down to earth and extremely likable. But I never found the spark they felt. The chemistry just wasn't there for me. The story is well written and it flows well, but there were a couple of major eye roll moments. But even so, this was still a enjoyable, quick and steamy read.
I went into this with high expectations as I am loving my MM reads lately, I'm gutted it didn't quite live up to them though :(
Troy joins a local gym in the hopes of buffing up to renew his sex life with his college sweetheart Emily but it didn't quite go that way...until it was too late. He didn't plan on falling for his male personal trainer, Mikah!
The relationship between them progressed like a normal friendship would but then it seemed really rushed with Troy wanting to have sex with Mikah, and then he kind of just seemed to forget about Emily... (The sex was hot though!)
I know this was a novella length story but I would have liked to read more about Emily, although she seemed like a bitch. Also I would have liked more emotions to the story as I didn't really connect with any of the characters.
I also found it difficult to read due to so many editing issues although I understand this is an arc. If there weren't so many I would have probably enjoyed it a little more. I feel it's a good storyline but I can only give 3*.
This was the first book I've read by this author and I have to say I was impressed. Troy was an out of shape man who was dating his high school sweetheart. Their relationship was a far from happy one. Their sex life was non-existent, because Troy was convinced that his out of shape body was a turn off to Emily.
Mikah was the trainer at the gym Troy takes an interest in. Sparks fly from their first encounter. After Mikah goes through a particular bad break up with his boyfriend Troy suggests getting Mikah out of his funk by taking him to the bar Mikah is always talking about. What Troy doesn't expect it's a gay club with a drag queen show.
I only gave this book 4 stars because there were grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Overall I would highly recommend this book!!
Training Him by Alissa Rose
Story - 4 stars
Editing - 1 star
Ending in 3 stars
M/M Romance
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
Mikah is an athletic trainer who seemed super genuine. He is kind, hot, take charge, but not in a demanding manner. Then you have Troy. He is floundering in his life - he's unhappy in his relationship, knows that he's out of shape and is looking for something, but doesn't know what that is.
When they are together, things make sense. You have some drama in the story, which helps create a feeling of cohesiveness and romance. I enjoyed the story a lot, but overall, the most glaring issue is the editing. Wrong usage of their and they're and there are quite a few typos. This would have received a higher star rating, but the editing detracted from the story.
Pass me your next manuscript and I'll proofread it for free!
I think a proper understanding of some basic grammar rules would be useful before sitting down to write a book. They're not there. More than not then. You're not your.
Other errors such as strait instead of straight. It's the 20th century...uh no, it's not. I'm pretty sure that unless you wrote this book more than 16 years ago then this is the 21st century. (Note the correct usage of than and then in the previous sentence.) This is just a very small example of the errors which were so numerous I don't think a page slipped past without one or more jumping out at me.
I'm sorry to write such a scathing review and I understand that some people self publish and do not have the funds for editors but please, find a fairly literate friend and ask them to read your book before hitting the publish button.
As a first timer reading m/m romance, this was an easy read.
Slightly predictable but a sweet story about an over weight man (Troy) trying to reignite his relationship with his girlfriend. He decides to join a gym and that is where he meets Mikah, a stunning fitness instructor who leaves Troy feeling confused.
The sex scene's were passionate and done with thought and care. In my opinion love and attraction can happen quickly, if it feels right then go with it. This is not a deep and meaningful read, it is not exploring coming out in any detail, its fiction and fantasy about two people coming together.
As a person who does like to immerse myself in a story, I did spot and notice a few details that could be edited/corrected, hence my three star rating.
This was an enjoyable read that was provided by the author herself in exchange for an honest review,
Alissa Rose has done it again with another well written novel. I wish it was longer because from page one to the last page the reader will be hooked. She knows how she wants the characters to be sound and what her readers want to see. It is a book that is outside of her current series and something i think is outside of her comfort zone. The topic that was being discussed can be a hard topic, but Alissa wrote it wonderfully.
Troy doesn't know what kind of relationship he wants to be in and doesn't like how his body is shaped. But throughout the book, Troy figures out who his true self is and who his true love is. In order to find out more you should read the book.
I had high hopes for this books, but it fell short. Even for it being a short read, I had hoped that it wouldn't be full of simple spelling and grammatical errors. The plotline well, although simplistic, had the potential to be fantastic, but it also fell short. The author made it unrealistic and not plausible that a straight man would just cross over without any qualms. It just needed more work. Simple spelling and grammatical errors are Writing 101. I hope that the author will go back and re-work it. Character development was obsolete. I would be open to giving it another read if errors are fixed.
I really enjoyed this quick m/m read. The story line is catchy and at some points downright hot. Troy has been with his high school sweetheart for years and to say its gone sour would be an understatement; when he meets Mikah he doesn't understand his feelings always having being straight. Mikah is also in a complicated relationship and doesn't brag about his sexuality especially around his work place. Until he wants it known. the characters balance and compliment the story really well. 4.5 stars for this book.
Great first M/M book by Alissa Rose!
Training Him is such a great book. I'm a big fan of "gay for you" books and this one is right there on that list. The characters were real and dealt with real life problems. The only bad thing I will say about this book..... It was too short. I'd love to read more from Troy and Mikah.
Love this
A very heartwarming story, articulated in a way that makes you forget who the characters are and let's you see them as people. Two people who deserve to be happy no matter what their preference. I was actually sad when the story ended and hope their is more to come.
