His first four novellas — Abby & Me, Chasing Tigers (with Danny Bushell), Broken Cages, (with Danny Bushell) and Spare Parts — established him as a distinctive Welsh voice in contemporary fiction.
His fifth novella, The Mijas Cowboy, publishes in October 2026.
The Mijas Cowboy follows four Cardiff men in their eighties who travel to Mijas in southern Spain to confront a friend who disappeared twenty-six years ago with their money. It is a novel about male friendship, invisibility, ageing, secrets and second chances.
And yes, there is a cowboy.
When he is not writing fiction, Michael writes about music, life and the creative process on his website Tales From the Monkey House at michaeljphillips.co.uk.
He is also a guitarist with around fifty years of performing experience and a member of Cardiff indie guitar pop band Breezbear.
He walks daily across a barrage by the sea. Most of his best ideas happen there.
Away from the page Michael loves Cardiff City, Punk Rock, guitars, Scorsese, The Big Lebowski, and a good curry.
