This is the fourth of a six-volume series called Reading the Bible as Literature . This volume on the Gospels continues the tradition of the first three in the series by exploring the intersection of the Bible and literature. Ryken enables pastors, students, and teachers of the Bible to appreciate the craftsmanship and beauty of the Gospels and how to interpret them correctly. He goes one step further than merely explaining the literary dimensions of the Gospels - he includes exercises to help students master this rich literary treasure.

This was EXCELLENT! I always looked at the Bible as literature, and have analyzed the writing styles through the years, but this book took me step-by-step through the gospels looking at all the different types of story-telling styles used by Jesus and the Gospel writers. I particularly appreciated the specific passages used as examples, as well as the options to try the analysis on your own.

I definitely found it helpful in analyzing scripture and will hopefully be able to incorporate much of what I learned in my lesson writing in the future.

Ryken says:
A Literary approach to the Bible has the following traits:
• Understanding that the Bible comes to us in literary form. (The Bible is an anthology of Literature.)
• Awareness of the literary aspects of the scriptures helps us analyze and understand them.
• Begins with the premise that a work of literature embodies universal human experience. (literature helps us understand life)
• The authors of scripture had literary and language skill which should be respected.
There are three approaches to scripture: theological, historical, and literary and each should be respected.
