John, a marine biologist, takes the finmen to a zoo. Scientists are astounded and the media perceive them as freaks. Perceptions change as people become fascinated with their dolphinalities. Their keen acoustic senses lead them into music and their show becomes a tourist attraction. Jeanie, their trainer, is amazed by their prodigious development. Academically, they advance rapidly and take classes on the Internet. When the zoo administration denies their request to visit the ocean, Doak tries to escape but is captured. Repression strains their unity but they recover and go on strike, compelling the zoo to grant them limited freedom.
