Like everyone in Gotham City knows Batman... Tssh!
James Gordon is the oldest support character in Batman comic books, since he is the only one who appears along with Bruce Wayne aka Batman on its first appearance on Detective Comics #27, not even Alfred was created yet. Since then an endless alliance and even it could be called friendship began to be forged.
While Batman can go into hiding whenever he wants assuming again his real identity of Bruce Wayne; James Gordon must deal without masks with all the corruption in Gothan City where even the Police Department is deeply infected.
I’m sorry, I’ve never taken bribes and I’m not about to start.
A corrupt city is a very bad place for an honest cop.
But even Batman needs Jim Gordon as Police Commisioner in Gotham City, or definitely his job as vigilante could be real hard to pull. And oddly enough, it seems that even if Batman would decide to retire, he would have plenty successors where to choose from...
...but if Jim Gordon would retire...
...who would be able to take his place?
THE KEY DOG OF THE LARGO SOUTH
Helluva vacation...
This one-shot tale is about a vacation taken by Jim Gordon after retiring from Police and he decides to go to some little comfy hotel in some distant beach place.
When I was starting to read I couldn’t help to remember the 1948’s film Key Largo and I was right since even the author makes a reference into the narration, and also I kinda remember some loose elements of the book The Dog of the South, but don’t take it wrong, since the story here is quite original. Also, a wonderful piece of artwork.
People like Gordon never can take some nice vacations expecting that none trouble would appear.
Since soon enough a storm, a murder, another murder, a murderer and a good kid will be all together in this too small hotel with Jim Gordon right in the middle trying to do his best to control the situation.
This may be a Room Full of Strangers but when you finished the story, you will know quite well each of them, and some of them, you will sadly know them too well, and you couldn’t help to shed some tears.
And James Gordon will realize on the hard way that he never truly retired and that the shadow of Batman never leave him alone, not matter where he may will go.
