There is nothing simple about starting a successful business—many people have amazing ideas, but there is a large gap between those who achieve their dreams and those who, sadly, fall short. Morkes has a very straightforward and direct system to which the book adheres, consisting of Phases, Milestones, and Azimuth Checks. He presents each Phase independently and provides a checklist for you to gauge your success in every chapter.
He also provides bonus resources which enable the reader to research each phase more in depth. The book ends with an overview making it truly like a textbook and course all wrapped up in one. I found the book to be a swift and easy-to-understand read. The information is presented without affectation with real life examples as highlights to better drive home the points being made. I feel as though Morkes’s military background is a benefit in his execution of the book and provides the context in a concise and immediately applicable manner.
The tone of the writing is also very helpful in making the book encouraging. Morkes assumes you will succeed and uses language to indicate that you have managed to complete all the tasks necessary in a successful manner, which aids in creating an air of positivity and forward movement. I was surprised that I felt excited to complete each chapter and see how the next phase fit into the overall jigsaw puzzle of business creation.

Collaborate; The Modern Playbook For Leading A Small Successful Team To Create, Market, And Sell Digital Products Online, by Tom Morkes, is a nonfiction novel about assembling a team to create a business. What’s especially nice is this book focuses on veterans working as a team to become entrepreneurs. This book, helps veterans become business owners without the same pitfalls Morkes experienced while he established his better, faster, and more rewarding market, and sold digital products online. Morkes states that in critical principles of life and business, speed is essential for success. He stresses not to do this on your own, but to form a team. Morkes’ style of writing is pleasingly organized. He uses steps, put in order, to keep the veteran, or reader, on track. Morkes even ends his chapters with a helpful link and ends the book with a review. He also makes the incredible statement that the book will help the reader achieve success in thirty days. The main point of Morkes’ book is about taking personal inventory of your business, and your life, thereby making better choices. Morkes also created the principle of 80/20. He writes that this principle is in everything and that 20 percent activity equals 80 percent results. He also stresses the importance of not doing this alone. He highly advises forming a team, pursuing advice, and uniting with experts in your niche. He does so by providing a step-by-step guide that is clearly written and easily read. The main core of the book is making bigger impacts and selling products online like a pro.
I enjoyed the author’s writing style. Morkes first presents the story of Steve, someone who is currently working and has a decently paying job but who has heard rumors of company-wide layoff. Steve grows anxious about starting to look at other options for himself. When he hears that the Internet could be a way out, he starts exploring that new world. Through Steve’s story, the author invited us to reconsider our current situation and widen our way of looking at our job and at our future. His main principle is that we should not do this as solopreneurs and stresses the importance of working collaboratively.
Another thing I liked about Collaborate: The Modern Playbook, by Tom Morkes, is that he breaks his process down into 5 phases that represent different aspects of collaboration. These phases make it easy for readers to follow the author’s principles. All in all, the book’s main premise is that forming a team and learning from others and with others would certainly help prototype an idea and sell it. Morkes invites us to use 20% of our time to work in order to obtain 80% of results. He simplifies things while building interest and encouraging readers to take a planned risk.
Tom Morkes wants his readers to invest in their ideas, sell products and live a life of hope. In his book Collaborate: The Modern Playbook for Leading a Small Team to Create, Market, and Sell Digital Products Online, the author widely focuses on marketing, selling products and using the digital space to grow as an entrepreneur. I appreciate Tom Morkes for how he has arranged his book by using a step by step model, showing the reader how they can build from scratch, create the best product, have a brand that everyone wants to associate with and make profits.
In simple steps, the author takes novices through phases that will get readers to become the dream entrepreneurs they want to be. The author is the kind of inspiration you need if you are stuck as an entrepreneur; he gives codes on how to come up with new ideas and how to implement them. The information the author provides is insightful and his writing is relatable and easy to understand. If you are looking for lessons about strategizing, and making profits in your business, then this book is for you.
The new digital marketing lexis the author introduces to the readers, entrepreneurial phrases and excellent approach on managing one’s business and finances are some of the greatest attributes of Tom Morkes' book. I rate the book with 5 out of 5 stars because the sharp-witted author understands that his audience consists of ambitious individuals that dream big, and that is why the text in the book is designed to inspire.
Morkes does a great job of walking you through a step-by-step, DIY collaboration method. He starts with the why and moves through the details into the how. You explore ways to find collaborators, how to vet them, and how to manage a project. You also get more than a few ideas on how to market and sell the product as well. It's pretty thorough without being a mind-numbing read like a lot of business books can tend towards. Part of this is because of Morkes' writing style, but also because it's very action oriented. It's very much like a class, albeit in book form.
Don't be mistaken about this being a purely readable book, though. This is exactly as it describes in the title -- a playbook. It's more workbook like than a wall o' text, so it inspires you to take action on the thoughts floating around in your head.
My problem with this is just that. I don't like workbooks. The lines and tables do nothing for me since I refuse to write in a book, especially when said book costs $50. I'd much have preferred the book to be shorter and the materials be available online to download. In the state that it is in, I'll never write in it. I'll use a spare notebook to jog down my thoughts and page numbers they are associated with.
Despite of that, it's a very utilitarian book that's also a delight to read. I highly recommend it to anyone that's considering collaborating and are new(ish) to the collaboration game. Unless you've got 100s of collaborations under the belt and learnt everything that could go wrong and right, it's a good book to invest in.
