Follow the author as she takes you on a personal journey disclosing a hard-scrabble life in the coal camps nestled in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia.
This was written by a high school classmate and many of her memories are also mine. Her life was much more difficult but the games and places she mentions, I remember well. And yes, I knew what red dog was - the end of the block I lived on had a red dog road running off of it. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane...red dog or otherwise.
I must be about the same age as the author. I recall so many things she mentioned such as the rollerskates with the key hanging around our neck. The need to walk
I must be about the same age as the author because her time frame on recall corresponds with mine. Being poor had its drawbacks but it also had the tendency to instill good values in a person and to be more appreciative when you did acquire things. I could relate to so much.
Loved the way this book was written. Learned a lot of the old cures used to treat burns, sickness etc. nicely detailed account of a young girl growing up in Appalachia
Good book good read good memories good good good good. I intensely dislike having too type a certain number of Words. I can say what I need in four words or less
I'm sorry it took her 6 years to write this book but I'm glad she did. I like having insight as to how other people live in other parts of the country. Thank you.
This brought back a lot of memories for me and my time growing up in Kentucky. Some of the expressions I hadn't heard in a long time (flat as a flitter).
I started reading this wonderful book and could not stop until I had finished. I felt like I was living next door to the author the entire time. Great read!!
Familiar people , familiar setting. Like reading a diary of someone known. Vignettes authentic and real, or th life in hardscrabble times in Appalachian mountains.
