I snagged this romantic suspense novel when it was a one-day Kindle freebie (no more, sorry) and gave it a quick read the same night. It's a self-published novel, but a reasonably good read if you're just looking for brain candy, some light entertainment of the heroine-in-grave-danger sort.
Hailey is six months pregnant and on the run, fearing for her life. She hightails it from Seattle back to her home town in New Mexico, where her grandmother, her only living family member, takes her in. It's revealed quite soon that Hailey is a surrogate mom for her best friend in Seattle, a wealthy but kind-hearted socialite with a husband who's become inattentive (yeah, having a baby is always a good way to fix a troubled marriage) and is involved in some questionable business dealings.
Because of reasons (mostly because we just need a good hunky romantic interest here), Hailey's grandma has a hot guy named Chuck helping her on the farm. Luckily for Hailey, when trouble finds her in New Mexico--which it does very quickly--Chuck also is an ex-Navy SEAL with lots of connections. So off Chuck and Hailey go, on the run from a man who is very determined to find Hailey and his unborn child, for all the wrong reasons.
This book surprised me by being more about the suspense than the romance. It's pretty much instalove for Hailey and Chuck, but circumstances will keep them apart for most of the book while Hailey bravely deals with the dangerous situation she's in, and Chuck works madly behind the scenes to get her out of danger. So the romance was pretty superficial, and I would have liked some additional depth in the characters and the plot, but there's some decent intrigue going on here, involving murder, mafia and all sorts of criminal doings.
