Sam Reilly #1-3

The Sam Reilly Collection

Rate this book
Three bestselling Sam Reilly novels by the new Master of Action and Adventure, Christopher Cartwright!

1. The Last Airship

In 1939 a secret airship departed Nazi Germany in the dark of night filled with some of the most influential people of its time.

Its cargo: a complement of rich Jewish families carrying their most valuable possessions. One such item amongst them was as dangerous as it was priceless.

The airship never reached its destination.

In 2015 Sam Reilly, a marine biologist and wealthy son of shipping mogul James Reilly discovers a missing clue about the lost airship and what follows is a violent treasure hunt, kept secret by the most powerful men in the world today, driven by their greed and need for that which all are motivated: the opportunity for unlimited power.

2. The Mahogany Ship

An ancient shipwreck.

A two hundred year old mystery.

A plague that’s destroying all marine life.

A pyramid half a mile below the sea.

And a puzzle that must be solved before it destroys the human race.

On the 18th of February, 1812, the Emily Rose became shipwrecked on the southern coast of Australia. The survivors are forced to walk nearly a thousand miles through the unexplored land to reach the only settlement, Sydney Cove.

Nearly two hundred miles inland, they come across the remains of a monstrous ship, far bigger than anything the British Navy had ever constructed. Through basic communication achieved with the natives, they learned that the ship had been there for a very long time… Maybe a thousand years? Despite the details of the mysterious ship in the journals from the survivors of the Emily Rose, no evidence that the Mahogany Ship ever existed was found – until now.

Present day: A mining exploration in Australia takes a core sample 500 feet below the surface of a deserted mountain. The sample returns no evidence of gold deposits, but something much more valuable – a single Spanish Gold coin, dated 1518. Could the origins of this coin finally reveal the existence of the fabled Mahogany Ship?

At the same time, Sam Reilly and his team of ocean investigators are exploring the cause of a widespread death of sea life within the Gulf of Mexico. In a race against time to stop the irrevocable destruction of the world’s marine life, the two mysteries may just be entangled, and failure to solve them both will result in the greatest threat to ever face the human race.

3. Atlantis Stolen

A civilization stolen from the history books.

A billionaire’s obsession to unlock its secrets.

A brotherhood determined to hide the truth.

And time is running out.

Only a handful of people know what destroyed the ancient Atlanteans, whose very existence is a secret that they will kill to protect. Unfortunately, the very same catastrophe that destroyed that once proud civilization is drawing near once more.

The question is, can marine biologist Sam Reilly discover the truth in time to prevent it?

This volume has the first three books of the Sam Reilly series, two of which I have read previously, while the second in the series was a new read for me.

The Last Airship is a good fast paced crime thriller with a big dose of conspiracy and mystery thrown in for good measure. Our lead, Sam Reilly, has had a very privileged upbringing which allows him to chase down a 75 year old mystery and also contributes to his involvement in the first place. Thankfully he is generally quite a likeable character but he maybe a little too nice and understanding at times, I'm hoping that this settles down as the series continues otherwise it could be too much. The rest of the characters I found a little flat and predictable but there were hints of something more going on behind the masks of some, especially his dad. On the whole the story was really enjoyable but there were a few moments where it leaped a little bit and I found myself going back to see if I missed something (I hadn't) but as an early work this isn't a major issue (assuming it is addressed in the rest of the series). As a start to a series it's not too bad, not brilliant but definitely has a lot of potential.

The Mahogany Ship is another good fast paced mystery thriller that combines an ancient mystery with a modern ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. It ties in beautifully with the third book (yes I have read them out of order) and starts off with an issue that is dear to my heart and one that is still a modern issue (despite Reilly's best efforts). Many of the characters are still a little flat and Sam is still too nice to be true but there are more hints at that little something else going on between him and his dad and the relationship between Sam and Billie is built on, which has helped my confusion from the third book.

Atlantis Stolen: I am so glad I gave this a go and was right about the potential the first book in the series showed and this was a really good read. Cartwright has kept the fast paced action packed nature of the first book and thrown it into overdrive while adding to the depth of his characters making them that little bit more believable, not to mention able to hid their real motives all the more (some of these people really were sneaky!). I think there may be a few points that I missed having not read the second book but I don't think this spoilt the story any as Cartwright does bring everything up to speed by introducing a few new faces so as they're brought up to speed so is the reader (always a welcome technique). I'm looking forward to trying the rest of this series now and can't wait to see the story and the writing develop further.

Excellent Mystery/Adventure Series 1-3

As Sam Reilly and his band of oddball/genius protagonists search the world for secrets that can save the planet, various outside forces either try to help or try to stop them short of their goals. The goals often seem impossible, the pay is low, and the hours long. People die all around our heroes.
This series of novels is exactly what an adventure series should be, with constant action, multiple historic secrets and beautifully intelligent women.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AS BOTH AN INDIVIDUAL BOOK AND AS A SERIES!

The Last Airship, my fourth read from author Christopher Cartwright. Well-written and captivating with well-developed main characters reminding one of Dan Brown’s writing as well as the character of Indiana Jones. It’s hard coming into a series in the middle, books #4, #5 & #6 I’d obviously missed much so I went back to the beginning. Since I own both the Audible & Kindle versions I was able to follow along while being read to.
The Last Mahogany Ship, my fifth read from author Christopher Cartwright. Well-written and captivating with well-developed main characters reminding one of Dan Brown’s writing as well as the character of Indiana Jones.
Atlantis Stolen, my sixth read from author Christopher Cartwright. Well-written and captivating with well-developed main characters reminding one of Dan Brown’s writing as well as the character of Indiana Jones. Since I own both the Audible & Kindle versions I was able to follow along while being read to. I’ll be reading more by this author as I own several more books in the series! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

This is the first three books of the Sam Reilly series! The Last Airship, The Mahogany Ship, and Atlantis Stolen. Each story is a standalone listen, with the common character of Sam Reilly featured in each book. The books are full of action, historical elements and vivid imagery. I love how the author weaves the mystery from the past into current situation. Sam Reilly has a penchant for peril and the duty to serve his country. Christopher Cartwright is a talented author who has a natural ability of suspense and action writing. David Gilmore is the perfect voice for this series with his distinguishable voices for the numerous characters and adds to the enjoyment of listening. This was time well spent listening and worth a credit!

Great Series!

This is my first time reading any of Cartwright's books & I thoroughly enjoyed the series! He does a great job of bringing everything to life & has an excellent writing style. The first three books in this series are heavy in not only history, but also in archeology. I was kind of leary about enjoying this type of genre, but Cartwright did such a great job that I'm looking forward to reading more on Reilly to see how everything plays out. This was books 1 through 3 of the Sam Reilly series & would make a great book for a long weekend. If you haven't read any of Cartwright's books & enjoy history, this is a great series to read!

A really stupid read

I like my heroes intelligent with some common sense. This guy sails into a hurricane, almost killed twice, asks for help but forgets his phone, thanks his girl companion is the target when he is almost killed again.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW

The Sam Reilly collection - Book 1 The last airship - I really enjoyed this story about a missing airship that escaped from Nazi Germany during the war. The ship has never been found. what secrets are buried with her and why are so many people looking for her but also does someone want Sam Reilly dead and if so who and why? This book is exciting and you get swept along on this treasure hunt for Sam’s life. It is full of twists and turns and you can trust no one. - Book 2 the mahogany ship - another treasure hunt of an adventure for Sam Reilly and yet again he is getting into trouble and risking his life to find a urban myth of a ship. Sam still doesn’t know who the good guys actually are and is his hunt for this ship for the greatest good or just greed. I love the descriptive way the author writes about wreck diving and he seems to have ab wide knowledge of the subject and makes the story feel very real to the listener. - Book 3 Atlantis Stolen - so the final book is in search of the island of Atlantis the famous and possibly mythical city which has never been located. Has Sam found the map to find this city and will finding it risk his life again as after all if he has an idea where it is then so have other people. The race is on again as Sam does not like the quiet life.
This is a great trio of stories full of excitement and adventure which does not disappoint.

This is easily the most terribly written piece of trash I’ve ever attempted to read. I actually signed up for good reads just to leave this review. My husband and I started laughing making up our own ridiculous overly extensive “scientific” description with a pile of deus ex machina tossed in after I read him a scene of a boat sinking as he was looking for dive equipment. Low and behold..... the next four pages were filled with the exact hilarious “writing” we’d improvised. I’m not sure if I should keep reading it just so my hisbamd and I can laugh. In summary..... this is truly terrible writing, stay away!

Wow, these three books were amazing!! Great story, great narration, great plot, loved it all. All 3 stories are similarly structured and inter-connected, so it's worth reading them all together/back to back. Great historical content, I'm super impressed with this collection. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who loves historical books, can't go wrong with these! :) Lots of action & adventure, suspenseful, thrilling! GREAT READ.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Red Necked Hillbilly

So a red necked hillbilly is only good enough to be the front line fodder for the elite to sacrifice. Never good enough to be a Navy Seal. Well, this red necked southern hillbilly, with an IQ he professes to be 50 points higher than said author, has the one star awarded power to forever adorn this novels rating list. Your condensing attitude, along with your writing skills, or lack there of, deserves nothing more.

Sea Tales

A three book collection of the ancient tale of Atlantis. These books were reminiscent of the early Clive Cusler’s works. A central, larger than life ,character with a faithful sidekick & a couple of beautiful, sexy women thrown in for additional entertainment. Not timeless prose but entertaining. I enjoyed all 3 books but found that sometimes I wished it would all come to an end. Worth your time but don’t expect to want more.

10 Pounds of Exitement in a 5 Pound Bag

This 3 in 1 series is similar to the Harvey Bennett series by Nick Thacker. The main characters keep getting into death defying situations and then move onto the next one. All 3 of the stories were very exciting and almost plausible. This was an enjoyable read.

The first trilogy of the amazing Sam Reilly novels. I loved the Dan Brown stories but I love these more. These stories send me off on browser tangents, looking things and events up...Google Earth to find the wonderful settings Chris has woven into his stories. I have binge-read this trilogy and many more. I honestly couldn't stop reading. He's my new current favourite author. 😁

Unbelievable and drama filled action

Three unbelievable and breathtaking scenarios. Can Tom and Sam, with the help of their super efficient crews defeat the arch evil doers of all time. How do you solve an 11000 year problem and are all the 'good guys' really on their side or just out to take over the greatest power struggle of all time.

Action-Adventure
For those who have no problem suspending their disbelief for some action, this is the ticket. Sam Reilly is a likable guy with a thirst for adventure and possibly mayhem. He loves to hunt down the legends and discover how much is truth.

There are holes within the plot lines occasionally, but for the most part they're good escapist novels.

I have reviewed these books individually, but I just loved having them all together in the collection.
Book 1 was great, book 2 not as good, but I loved the pace of book 3.
And books 2 and 3 almost blend together, so it was good reading them back to back in this set.

Great adventure read!

This series was engaging and hard to put down. The characters, though not your average humans, are intelligent and capable and not so unbelievable that you become engrossed in the stories. I also love the history that is woven into story lines.

Great stories!

Very imaginative plots with loads of action. My only complaint is that the men. are invariably in the superhero mould, and the women in the supermodel mould, and all are intolerably intelligent!
