Anonymní katolík

Autobiografická kniha Thierryho Bizota, známého televizního producenta, vypráví o znovuobjevení křesťanské víry, které nastane, když to nejméně čeká – uprostřed krize středního věku.

A few years ago, this little book was a real hype in France, at least in catholic circles (there even is a film adaption). The author is a relatively known televisionproducer and author. Through this autiobiographical novel he "confessed" he had found the way back to religion and the catholic church, which is not obvious in the very secular France.

Bizot's story is interesting: raised as a catholic but estranged from it, successfull in private and professional life but still a bit unsatisfied; by coincidence he ends up in an evening session of catechesis and discovers he still is intruiged by the biblical stories and the rituals, so he keeps on coming back, though with much reluctance. This testimony is brought with a lot of personal emotion and humor, so you can not but sympathise.

But then, in the end, he is converted and "sees the light". Now, that is where I got lost. In his words this conversion is confined to feelings of joy, strength and satisfaction, all related to his own person (the feeling to be chosen or elected). Nowhere there is a reference to an openess or even a service to others, whilst I think that is one of the fundamentals of christianity. At the end of his book Bizot is all egocentric smugness, and I really hate that. It even brought me to think that perhaps Bizot has understood the deep urge for spirituality and identity in our time, and he is cleverly making use of it. If that is true, that is despicable.

I did not know quite what to expect from this. The book was brought to my attention during a retreat with staff members from the hospital where I used to work. During that retreat, they showed us fragments of an interview with the author whom I found to be an inspiring figure, though a firm believer, he also seemed grounded in modern day life and reality.
Every page of this book contained emotions, thoughts, and ideas that I recognized. The story itself reminded me a lot of the sort of conversion I have lived through myself in recent years. And I share his opinion as to what is the essence of our christian beliefs and to what makes Jesus such an inspiring figure.
Perhaps the only disappointment for me was that it contains no directions as to how one ought to put one's faith into practice or how one might add more depth and meaning to the Gospel texts. The book is above all a personal testimony about how rediscovering one's faith can become a life-changing experience for the person in question and his entourage.
