Jessica Sepel, a young Sydney-based nutritionist, is following in the footsteps of health bloggers such as Lee Holmes, Lola Berry and Sarah Wilson. Jessica is a trained nutritionist with a burgeoning private practice and a hugely popular health blog. Her philosophy is simple: good health starts in the kitchen. Her focus is on fresh produce, prepared simply and with love. Her work with girls and young women has taught her that the common practice of counting calories and restricting food groups is counterproductive to a healthy relationship with food. Her message is 'get healthy' rather than 'lose weight'.
The Healthy Life is fully photographed, and has 100 recipes, meal plans, and a kind approach to creating better health and stress-free living.
I'd have to say this was one of the more accessible healthy cook books out on the market. It's simple to use and is educational with achievable changes to your lifestyle. The ingredients used in the recipes are easy to find in your local supermarket or fruit shop.
I've been using the recipes for nearly a month now and have found it has really changed my eating habits in a short period of time.
I probably won't be making anything like cauliflower pizza or zucchini pasta but I've made the stuffed capsicum and homemade teriyaki sauce over and over again. Delicious!
Brilliant book. This goes beyond paleo or gluten free. It's a workbook to help you identify your specific food problem and how to address, gut, sugar, liver and hormonal food problems. The recipes are delicious - loving it
I didn´t know what to expect from this book because I never saw her blog, but I was pleasantly surprised! I really liked this book because it covers many topics that all influence how good one feels with and about body and mind. It explains how the modern lifestyle affects us negatively, and gives very detailed advice on how to regenerate to a healthier and fitter state of mind and body.
I had already read a few other "healthy living" books, but what I never liked about them was the very detailed scientific explanations, going on for pages, how this enzyme affects that hormone and how this communicates something to some synapse in the nervous system. This may not be a very inquiring approach of mine, but I always felt bored and not very motivated to understand exactly the science behind the advice. To me it feels like when studies are presented - there is always another study to contradict it anyway. I don´t have a scientific background, so anyone who has can put information in scientific terms together and I´ll just have to believe it, or not. And that´s what sometimes made me put other books aside or at least skip parts, because my goal was just to increase my motivation and get a few practical tips on healthy living, and not feel like I´m back in 10th grade doing my biology homework.
So, to make a long story short - this book is different. The advice it gives covers a lot of ground, but is kept very precise and to the point - there are explanations of course, but easily understandable and not long winded. It´s presented in an appealing way and really amped up my motivation to eat/live healthy. I liked that it doesn´t only focus on nutrition and crazy amounts of exercise, but has a rather relaxed vibe about it, along the lines of "learn to listen to your body". It often makes suggestions without saying "you have to, or else!"
Even though Jessica Sepel presents her advice without being too scientific, I´m sure that she could, because she has the education to do so, which is presented in the back of the book. The second half of the book contains recipes which sound really tasty and interesting and make me want to run to the kitchen to try them out. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who needs a kick in the behind concerning healthy lifestyle, but who´s not on the crazy intense diet & workout train.
This book honestly changed my life! I love how simple and quick the recipes are using whole foods. I also love the advice Sepel gives. This really is amazing!!!
