Dans un futur proche mais indéterminé, « L’Agence » cherche à récupérer un prototype de la machine EP1 (Elephant Program One) dérobé par une jeune femme, Anna, pour le compte d’une agence rivale, la NAIA. De son côté, une organisation criminelle tente de doubler la NAIA par le biais d’un agent infidèle. Le boîtier EP1 n’est pas seulement l’enjeu de cet affrontement entre trois redoutables puissances puisque, couplé à un boîtier jumeau, il est aussi l’arme essentielle de cette lutte : le module ainsi constitué force, scrute, inspecte les souvenirs enfouis des agents branchés aux machines, moissonne de l’information mémorielle et dévoile des champs mentaux inexplorés… Per Esperen, un responsable technique de l’Agence qui supervise la recherche de l’EP1, contribue à brouiller un peu plus les pistes. Progressant sous un masque impassible, il agit en franc-tireur avec l’espoir de trouver refuge dans l’espace mental révélé par les machines.

De flash-back en fantasme, de rêve en souvenir, de glissement en faux raccord, toute certitude positive, tout repère se délite : Le Programme Immersion est un récit-piège où le lecteur se trouve, en tous sens du terme, captivé. Ayant hacké sa propre intrigue, le récit suit ses personnages dans leur néant, explore leurs relations autant qu’il les distord, fouille leurs consciences, et de loin en loin dysfonctionne, au gré d’amples oscillations paranoïaques.

Translated from the French, this graphic novel will delight fans of Charles Burns' light horror/fantasy style and David Lynch's bizarre dreamworld settings. The unsettling, but skillful and neat imagery details a secret government surveillance weapon that enters people's memories and minds. It's part spy-thriller, part trippy sci-fi, part art-house film. It will leave you feeling a little uneasy, a little scared, but in awe of its stylistic impressions.

I am the translator of this book!

Originally published in France in 2015, this new edition, The Immersion Program, was published by Floating World Comics this year. It is a surreal espionage thriller by Léo Quievreux, where secret agents chase each other through increasingly dense and dreamlike realities, superficially a bit in line with the film Inception, but far more weird. Quivreux's stark black and white artwork is reminiscent of Charles Burns (and even reminded me a bit of Junji Ito at times) and the book has multiple long, silent sequences full of abstracted geometric imagery and bizarre psychic landscapes. The plot is both spare and complex, with plenty of old-fashioned spy stuff mixed in with the trippiness, and rewards multiple re-readings, in my opinion.

Η βασική ιδέα του Immersion Program κινείται γύρω από μια νέα τεχνολογία η οποία επιτρέπει σε αυτόν που τη χρησιμοποιεί να βλέπει τις αναμνήσεις κάποιου ανθρώπου, συνειδητές και ασυνείδητες. Γίνεται μια μάχη μεταξύ μυστικών πρακτορείων για την απόκτηση του και τη χρήση του ως όπλο. Από ένα σημείο και μετά αρχίζει να μην γίνεται καν κατανοητό το ποιός είναι ο αληθινός κόσμος και ποιός ο κόσμος των αναμνήσεων για τους χαρακτήρες μας. Στο τέλος βλέπουμε κιόλας ότι υπάρχει η δυνατότητα το μυαλό κάποιου να μείνει μόνιμα σε έναν καλύτερο κόσμο, των αναμνήσεων.

Ομολογώ ότι η σεναριακή ιδέα είναι πολύ πρωτότυπη και θα μπορούσε να εξελιχθεί σε ένα υπέροχο κατασκοπευτικό θρίλερ αγωνίας. Δυστυχώς ο δημιουργός του IP μας τη δίνει κάπως βεβιασμένα, χωρίς να εξηγεί πολλά πράγματα και ειδικά στο τέλος, για το οποίο δεν δίνεται καμία απολύτως εξήγηση στο πώς μπορεί ένα μυαλό να μείνει μόνιμα στον κόσμο των αναμνήσεων (δίνεται ίσως μια εξήγηση ότι παραμένει η συνείδηση μέσα στο μηχάνημα, αλλά με βάση τον τρόπο λειτουργίας του μηχανήματος δε βγάζει νόημα και εν τέλει ποτέ δε γίνεται ξεκάθαρο).

Στο σχεδιαστικό κομμάτι τώρα, θεωρώ ότι τα σχέδια του Quievreux αποτελούνται από πολλές δόσεις σουρεαλισμού, αν και κάποια σκηνικά είναι αρκετά ρεαλιστικά. Το μόνο που δε μου άρεσε είναι ο σχεδιασμός των πρόσωπων των χαρακτήρων. Κατά τα άλλα είναι υπέροχο το σκίτσο αν και ήθελα να έχει και λίγο χρώμα.
