Bookworm #2

Downfall

Rate this book
How does the fairytale end when the princess ghosts out on the marriage two weeks in?

Seriously. Someone tell me, because this is not how I pictured happily every after going. Sure, Lily McCandless warned me from the beginning that she didn't do commitment. And yeah, we started out as a casual vacation hook-up. But we moved past that. We fell in love. Isn't love supposed to conquer all? That's what all the stupid books say.

I don't know if we can fix this. But I don't know how to walk away from the one person who sets my whole world on fire either. I used to think that I could convince Lily to believe in a love that lasts forever; now I wonder if we've all been lying to ourselves. Maybe that kind of love doesn't exist at all.

Maybe some happy endings don't find their way until you burn them to the ground first.

Downfall is a companion novel to On Paper and part of the Bookworm Series. It can be read as a stand-alone.

“Tonight, you are mine. There is no yesterday. There is no tomorrow. There is only tonight. Only us. Tonight, I still love you, you are still my wife and there are no silent goodbyes, no rings left behind and no promises unkept. Tonight, we don’t ask questions. Do you understand?”

I finished this book late last night, and my mind and emotions are still reeling from this wonderful, heartbreaking, relentless, amazing book. It's been years since I've worked with Shae on her novels, but when she contacted me about the conclusion to Miles and Lily's story from ON PAPER, I could not pass up the opportunity to finish their story. And holy crap what a story it turned out to be.
Some happy endings don’t find their way until you burn them to the ground first.

Even though ON PAPER was the story of Quinn and Keaton's journey to love, we get see and meet Miles and Lily and bear witness to their young and volatile love. Lily is flighty and carefree, living in the moment and not taking life too seriously. Watching her best friend Quinn fall in love is all the romance that Lily ever wanted in her life, but she finds herself wishing for more when she meets Keaton's brother, Miles.
"Why do we keep doing this to each other?"
"Because as hard as it is to be together, we don't know how to go back to being apart."

Miles is the calm to Lily's storm, the hand that pulls her back when she feels like running away. But two weeks after their hasty marriage, Lily leaves Miles sleeping in their bed, her wedding band and a note her only goodbye. And thus begins their tumultuous and heart-wrenching story of redemption and love. This novel is one of the most emotionally raw stories I've read. Throughout their journey of hurt and misunderstanding, I found myself both frustrated with and sympathetic to Miles and Lily, while Shae continually ripped my heart apart with her beautiful prose and flawless story. The push-and-pull between Miles and Lily kept me riveted the entire length of the novel as their love seemed inevitable yet doomed from the start. Overall, this is another knockout from Shae, and I cannot recommend her books enough when you feel the need for an emotionally satisfying novel ♡

My Miles, a broken yet optimistic soul who's unable to let Lily go for good....

This is the 2nd book in this amazing series and is Lily and Miles’ story. We meet both characters in “On Paper” as Lily is Quinn’s best friend, and Miles is Keaton’s brother. Lily is a free spirit while Miles pulls her back to reality when required and convinces her to believe in love. These two embark on what is just supposed to be a vacation hook-up which develops into more, and I loved the push and pull between the characters. No spoilers: this is a definite must read you will not be disappointed. This is a beautifully written story which is an emotional roller coaster throughout and is a raw and gritty read as well as having heartbreak, redemption, and love. I was enthralled throughout this riveting tale and look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I recommend for all.

Downfall is a companion novel to On Paper, but it can be read as a standalone. If you'd like to see how Lily and Miles got there start you can read the free prequel novella, Free Fall.

The wait for this book was well worth it.
I have always loved Lily and Miles and couldn't wait to read their story yet putting into words how much I actually loved this book is really hard. Miles and Lily's story was one of resiliency, love, uncertainty and friendship. I certainly didn't expect their journey to be what it was but it was refreshing to read a story line that I hadn't read before.
Miles and Lily have always had such a strong connection and passion in their relationship. Their journey took me on a roller coaster of emotions. I loved them, were annoyed with them, wanted to yell at them through the pages and swooned at their love for each other all at the same time. I wasn't sure where they would end up, but their ending was perfect for them.
It was nice to be able to reconnect with Keaton and Quinn and see that their love for each other and for Miles and Lily.
A must read!

Miles & Lily are complete opposites, though the chemistry they have with each other is full of passion and won't be denied.  Lily is a girl who is a free spirit, and a flight risk when she gets scared, while Miles is a good, down to earth guy, so the calm to her storm, but you know that opposites attract. Anyway, they end up shooting from the hip and get married, and it's not long after that she runs, which gets an extremely emotional journey kicked off.  I felt like my heart was breaking since I loved both of these characters though Lily could frustrate me a bit more with her push & pull, even with the demons she carries.  Downfall was a breathtaking beautiful story that will put you through the emotional ringer, but one that no one needs to miss so hit your one click buttons!  HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

3 1/2 stars actually. I felt the story was good, Lily and Miles were fine characters, but I felt the obstructions to getting back together a little too forced and the misunderstandings a bit much. Lily was strong enough to plan her future without Miles, did what she thought was right for him, but did not go for her own happiness. Miles' attraction to his wife was strong, but he fought it all the way when she made her mistakes until he could not deny the physical side of their relationship any more. He was good at getting what he wanted but not at communicating and understanding points of view from others. There will be people who thoroughly enjoy this book, so please take the chance and read it for yourself.

I received a copy of this story through Enticing Journey Book Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.

Rush into decisions? Live in the moment? Find out later, maybe you didn’t think it through. Meet Lily. I can guarantee she is hard not to love and the best bff you can have at your side. Miles is simply the good guy.

This book was worth the wait. It’s Shae’s best book to date. A woman’s journey of growing up after loss and making real life decisions that can impact a lifetime.

It’s a standalone.,the free prequel i suggest reading first It adds to the story, not a must to read starting Downfall. On Paper (Bookworm 1), tells Keenan and Quinn’s story and they are strong characters in Downfall.

The premise of Downfall is an age old dilemma of fear of commitment on Lily’s part as she struggles to come to terms with her feelings toward marriage, something that she fell into haphazardly, apparently on a Vegas whim. Rather than hash it out with her new husband Miles, she abandons the marriage leaving Miles in a state of confusion and frustration. He gives chase, she allows him to seduce her as she seems to have little or no resistance to his charms. Author Shae Scott has a talent for making the resultant back and forth banter and inner thought processes real and relatable. I held back one star because I felt the storyline could have used a little something more. Otherwise, bravo!
