When a friend publishes a book, you order it. Books are my thing, so why not, and it helps out, and you liked the first book that said friend published, so what the heck.

Then you notice that in the publicity for the book it's described as "young adult", and you have no real idea what that means. You know that there was probably no such thing when you were a young adult, but, obviously, you have visited your local bookstore and seen the shelves of stuff they think is suitable for young adults... and it's diverse. Very Diverse. So you are a little worried....

So you start reading and make a few mental notes on things outwith the story itself to comment, just so you don't have to be cruel or wishy-washy in your goodreads review; things like 'Oh, I could say I would've chosen a smaller font and more whitespace to avoid the feel of Big Letter Edition', or 'Oh, there's a small editorial oversight' (on page 34, penultimate paragraph, last sentence lacks a 'to' if you wondered, Z), but as you read more of The Annals of Bobian (make sure you have the correct number of Ns when you write that), it turns out there was no need to worry at all.

The wee stories range from witty to hilarious with a few detours through heart-rending pangs of empathy at the poor Bobian. The characters are generic enough to be recognisable for everyone, yet not complete stereotypes. Each supporting character has its charm, with NDNK being a particular favorite. Only small plot bunny (is that the term in this case?) I may have spotted is that Queen Mother's omniscience doesn't appear to extend all the way to The Bobian's heart's desire.

Anyway, that's nitpicking, I thoroughly enjoyed Zanzibar's second (I didn't miss any, did I?) effort, and decided that I don't care if I were the target audience or not.

The Bobian is twelve and he just knows he's brilliant and awesome. His world revolves around the last time he had a taste of ice cream. However, it would appear everything is getting in the way of that delicious, creamy treat.

This book is an amusing look at almost a year's worth of Bobian's life and his never-ending quest for ice cream. Each chapter is almost a short story of a time in The Bobian's year. The way it's written sets it up to be an excellent book for kids, especially boys, who have short attention spans and/or difficulties reading.

As a mother of three boys myself, I felt a certain affinity for The Queen Mother. I could relate to many of the scrapes The Bobian gets himself into. Having a son like The Bobian would have been a trial, but there wouldn't be a dull moment, that's for sure.

All in all, this book is a great read for children and adults who have a sense of humor, or have boys who've made you wonder, "what now" a few times.

The Bobian has many misadventures. As I continued reading, I realized that I live with a creature that is very much like The Bobian. His epic quest for his holy grail (ice cream before the end of summer) is so intriguing. I laughed until I cried. This is a great book for parents and kids alike.
