Goodbye Ruby Tuesday

Rate this book
Four friends have become three. But that’s only the beginning.

Ruby, Evie, Mollie and Chelsea were the bad girls at school. But Ruby was the baddest. Evie fought her anger, Mollie fought her mother and Chelsea…well, Chelsea just fought. But Ruby set her sights on a bigger stage. And together, they dreamed of a future where Ruby could sing, Evie could make art, Mollie could bake, Chelsea could dance – and all of them could finally feel at home.

A decade later, the girls are reunited for the funeral of Ruby, who took the world – and the charts – by storm, before fading too soon. And Evie doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry when she learns that Ruby has left them a house on Camden Square – the perfect place for them to fulfil their dreams. But does she dare take the plunge, and risk it all for one last shot at the stars?

I’ve never read an A.L. Michael book I didn’t love so I was excited to start reading her latest novel, Goodbye Ruby Tuesday, which is book one in her new series The House on Camden Square. This one was a little bit of a slow starter for me but once it got going, I was completely engrossed and could not put my Kindle down. I just adore how the author’s books are always so contemporary, so fresh and different. Sure, the themes are the same as you would expect – romance, friendship, overcoming obstacles. But the characters, the settings, the scenarios, the depth to everything, the craft of the story and every other little thing is the reason I loved reading Goodbye Ruby Tuesday because I never felt like I’d read it all before. A.L. Michael delivers something new, relevant and absorbing every single time.

Ruby, Evie, Chelsea and Mollie were best friends for a few years at school, dreaming of bigger and better things. Like lots of school friends, they drifted apart and only Ruby appears to be living her dream of being famous and causing trouble, just like she’d predicted. Ten years on from school, Evie, Mollie and Chelsea are reunited at Ruby’s funeral and just as they’re attempting to accept the new people they’ve become, they discover that Ruby has left them a place in Camden Square where all the dreams they’d shared as teenagers could be brought to life.

I found the whole concept to this book to be something refreshingly different and having not read a scenario too similar to this one before, I was looking forward to seeing how things would play out if and when Evie, Chelsea and Mollie were persuaded to follow Ruby’s lead and return to their school-girl dreams.

Even though Ruby has already died before the timeline of this book begins, I loved getting to know her character through the way the other characters spoke about her and the small titbits we pick up on in flashbacks to their school years. Ruby definitely felt just as well-developed a character as the other girls and this allowed me to become really invested in the story as I bought into it and found myself wondering what Ruby would think if she could see how things were transpiring for the friends she lost contact with. Ruby was a very one-of-a-kind character who I didn’t feel like we missed out on connecting with because she had died – her whims, choices and presence were still felt (not in a supernatural way!) all throughout the book because of the memories Evie, Mollie and Chelsea shared.

I warmed to Evie, Chelsea and Mollie very quickly and enjoyed reading about their friendship and seeing them attempt to reconnect. Evie and Mollie hadn’t lost contact, as Evie was godmother to Mollie’s sweet daughter Esme, but they found that Chelsea represented something completely different than they would have expected having known her at school. Evie is the main character in Goodbye Ruby Tuesday but each of them had a big role in the story and they were all interesting and engaging. Predictably I also loved the inclusion of a bit of romance in this novel as the chemistry bounded off the pages. Also because I think I’ve just fallen for another fictional guy.

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday is a very character-driven book which works well because each character is vividly described and defies any labels. Rather than being “good girls” or typical cookie-cutter characters who are simply nice and likeable, Evie, Chelsea and Mollie are anything but. They are likeable but not in a forced way – I connected and rooted for them because of their flaws, because they weren’t just three women in need of a break. Instead, it was their mentalities and personalities that led the story and had me hooked.

Mostly, though, Goodbye Ruby Tuesday is a fresh, uplifting, and highly entertaining story – perfect to fill a day’s reading with. A.L. Michael’s style of storytelling has you trying to convince yourself one more chapter is enough – but it never is. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

What an excellent start to what promises to be a truly enjoyable series. I can't help but admire Evie, Mollie and Chelsea for wanting to make something more of their lives than the small town they great up in. They have all craved escape for various reasons, but it took for their school friend's death, Ruby Tuesday, for them to do anything.

Ruby left her girls, a house in Camden, where she used to go to write songs, so that after her death they could use it to turn it into the arts centre they used to dream of when they were younger. However since Ruby has been out of touch with them for years she doesn't know just how different their lives turned out from their plans.

I loved seeing the flash backs to when the four were all at school together, and I almost shuddered at the home situations they had. One girl has an alcoholic mother, one has a gangster dad, one was passed from foster family to foster family and the other has a unfeeling, conman father who was continually unfaithful.

And yet in spite of their circumstances the girls are determined to break free of their town and not turn into their own parents, with various degrees of success.

This is a fabulous story of friendship, and I loved seeing where the plot would take me. Mollie has a 10 year old girl who is almost certainly the star of the book, and I loved hearing whatever she had to say. There is one main love interest, and he is a bit moody, but very good with his hands, I just wish I had got to know him a bit more.

This is the first book in the The House on Camden Square series, and I am already greatly looking forward to reading book 2, to see how the story progresses.

Thank you to Netgalley and Carina for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday is contemporary fiction.

Ruby Tuesday was a music star; we are first introduced to her at a funeral. Her three schoolfriends have come to pay their respects to her. When they were teenagers, the friends had big dreams; they talked about opening a community arts centre.

Ten years on and Ruby left them a studio in London and an opportunity to live their dream. But a lot has happened in those years since school; can Evie, Mollie and Chelsea make the centre work? See here for full review https://wp.me/p2Eu3u-d9x

I received a copy of this from the author and netgalley in return for a fair and honest review - thankyou!

This is a warm and witty beginning to what is set to be a wonderful new series, The House on Camden Square, and I am really looking forward to more if the first book in the series is anything to go by!

The book starts with the coming together of 3 old school friends as they meet up at the funeral of one of their old friends, Ruby, who went on to become a massive music star that met with a tragic end. Evie, Mollie and Chelsea had all drifted apart after school and college despite all being thick as thieves at school along with Ruby, and it was difficult for them seeing all the hangers on at the funeral as they knew the girl before fame changed her and it sets their minds to thinking what could have been if they'd all stayed in contact.

A letter is found amongst Rubys things that is addressed to the other girls, and the contents of which bring them all back together to try and achieve what they had all talked about doing when they were at school - before their real lives got in the way! She leaves them a house in Camden with a 6 month lease and she wants them to follow their dreams of opening an Arts Centre so they can all play to their strengths and turn their dreams into reality.

This doesn't run as smoothly as Evie had hoped as they all have different baggage that they are carrying around and as they've all moved on with their lives in different ways they find it difficult to see how they can make it work in such a short space of time.

. But as they start spending more time with each they seem to give each other strength and confidence and the old friendships fall back into place and they start to believe in themselves once more, as Ruby had hoped I'm sure!

There are some really funny moments of banter between the friends, and also the new friends they make from Rubys life, and this story is a great lesson in not letting your fears or outside influences take over control of your life, and they do meet with some resistance from various quarters and also a blast from the past comes close to threatening their future. It is a great mix of seeing the women filled with hope, but also seeing them have to deal with tougher times and reminders of some not so pleasant episodes in their lives, and we also get glimpses back to when they were at school and how they all met and the things that they got up to!

Really looking forward to the next in the series, Nice Day for a White Wedding, and just can't wait to see how all the characters progress in their journey!

Last year I read and absolutely loved A.L. Michael's novel If You Don't Know Me By Now. It was amazing, so I was absolutely STOKED to be invited to be part of the tour for her new book Goodbye Ruby Tuesday. I started and finished it pretty much in one sitting, only stopping to eat my tea, and even then it was a bit of a wrench to put it down, because I just enjoyed it so, so much. A.L. Michael is an amazing writer and I can't believe I haven't read her other books bar one (although I will now - believe me!).

First off, let me say that A.L Michael has GOT to write Ruby's story. The House on Camden Square is going to be a trilogy, which I assume with comprise of Evie's book (this one), Chelsea's book (the next one) and Mollie's book. But, I'm really sorry, Ruby Tuesday needs her story telling. It'll be hard - she lived quite the life, and died in the same vein that took a lot of those members of the 27 club, but I think it's a story that needs to be told. You can't tease us about Ruby and not give us her story. I want to hear it. I am clamouring for it, and we only see little bits of her, but man, is she a girl with a story that needs to be told.

But onto Goodbye Ruby Tuesday. I loved it. I really did. You know when you just click with a book and know you're going to enjoy it? That's how I felt about this book. I whizzed through it - the characters were so much fun to get to know, and there was no ridiculous, pointless drama near the end that messes everything up, instead the girls were kicking ass and taking names the whole novel, as Evie was determined to make Ruby's final wishes come true, to see the girls finally open up the arts studio they craved to open as teenagers, something they could have done with in their own lives. Yes, it took a bit of creative storytelling to get everyone on board, but I loved Evie's passion. After all, what was waiting for them? Not a lot, I can tell you, so why not give it a shot, ya know? If you don't try, you never know what might happen, and that very much encapsulates this whole story.

There was genuinely nothing wrong with this book, although I never, in a million years, would have allowed there two be three characters with a name beginning in E - Evie, Evelyn and Esme. And when they're all in a scene together, your eyes won't know which E character we're on about! Apart from that, this book was amazing. It had that amazing chemistry between four friends who, while they might not always see each other, have that deep friendship that lasts years, and I loved Evie's passion for getting this project off the ground, it's pretty amazing, actually and very selfless and I loved Chelsea and Mollie, although Esme was my favourite. I do love a precocious ten-year-old and Esme was so astute, so wise for her years.

I can't wait for the next Camden House book! I'm excited to know more about Chelsea, she seemed very different now than she was as a teenager and I'm interested into what made that change come around, and I LOVED Kit, so I hope he's here to stay. (And again, with the name thing - Kit and Killian (I LOVED KILLIAN! Hot man makes furniture, sigh, I wanted one of those cat bed things AND a window seat AND bookshelves), I MEAN COME ON, will Mollie's fella be called Kevin?!?!?!?!) But I want Ruby's book. I will start a petition to make this happen. I loved Goodbye Ruby Tuesday, and I'm kinda sad that Ruby is gone, although her presence is more than felt in this book, let me tell you. I loved Evie, Mollie and Chelsea. And Esme. Oh, Esme was AWESOME. I just loved everything about this book. So go and read it.

Nice Read

Wasn't too sure about this book when I started it, it was a bit slow and seemed a bit confusing with the flashbacks. However, once you got used to the style and the flashbacks it all fitted into place perfectly. The flashbacks have a lot of insight into the three remaining friends then and in the future. It would have been nice to know a little bit more about Ruby. Still I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will read the others in the series.

Girl power

A fab story about four friends (and their new addition Esme!) telling the world how anyone can make their dreams come true with a bit of hard work, determination and friendship. Happy, sad, funny and everything in between.

This was such an uplifting story, I felt quite emotional and energised at the end.

The author, A.L. Michael, has quite cleverly written around the grief that the three young women were feeling over the untimely death of one of their best friends from school. Although, the girls had all grown apart in the ten years since they left school the legacy of Ruby Tuesday has brought them all back together. Initially, just for the funeral but a surprise letter from Ruby has given the girls a seed of hope for the future.

Whilst the girls were at school they were known as trouble makers, their family life and backgrounds hadn’t been easy. The girls had a lot of fun at school but the best time they had was dreaming about opening up an Arts Centre were all four of them could share their love of art, theatre, dance, cooking, anything creative really. Over the last ten years life has got in the way of this dream but vivacious Ruby never quite forgot and within her legacy she has left the girls the keys to a dream they’d all buried ten years ago. However, a time limit beckons. Can Evie, Mollie and Chelsea pick up from where they left their dream ten years ago and turn this seed of hope into reality?

Turning grief into a new beginning was so heart warming. There were many moments in the story when we time hopped back to the girl’s teenage years and their time with Ruby. Goodbye Ruby Tuesday is book 1 in The House on Camden Square series and we focus mainly on Evie’s story. When Evie learns of this legacy she is quite instrumental in bringing the dream into reality, she is also the creative genius within the trio. Evie’s family life is quite troubled and it has made her very angry and many times in her past she has struggled controlling this anger. An ugly reminder from her past keeps returning and is a threat to the girl’s future.

It was just wonderful to see all the characters developing and growing with this challenge. Each girl brings a different perspective and strength to the story and I loved the sub-characters of Killian, Esme, Evelyn and Kit. I can’t wait to hear more from the girls and the development of these sub-characters.

A gorgeous story I couldn’t read quick enough. Inspiring, uplifting, charming and romantic. Bring on the next story ‘Nice Day for a White Wedding’, which was released yesterday! 5/5*

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday is a very different concept to anything i had read before. Reading the blurb i actually felt a little sad the main character had died. But i was in for a treat as A. L. Michael put this together and made it a happy story and one that Ruby will be remembered for a life time.
So in this story we have, Ruby, Evie, Chelsea and Mollie who all lived on the same estate and were best friends at school. As the years have gone on the friends drifted apart and each did their own thing. Ruby was the only one to live the dream and became famous. but causing strife and mischief along the way. Ten years later, the friends, Evie, Mollie and Chelsea sadly reunite at Ruby’s funeral. After, they discover that Ruby has left them a place in Camden Square so they can forfill their own dreams and achievements.
I really engaged with Evie, Mollie and Chelsea. Esme, Mollie's 10 year old daughter was a breath of fresh air. I loved Evelyn the landlady and friend to Ruby. The description of her Library was idilliac.
No story is complete without a handsome man. This comes in the form of Killian who shares the place in Camden to make furniture, he quickly gets the attention of Evie. We also have Kit who is the boyfriend of Chelsea, he seems such an all round nice guy too.
We revisit some of Ruby's life in flashbacks and i felt Ruby has as much impact in the story as the others despite her passing.
The girls know how to kick ass and stand up for themselves as they spent too much time keeping quiet.
I am so pleased this is only book 1 as i feel there is more to come and learn about these girls. Id really love to find out Ruby's story too. A. L. Michael should be proud of this story. It has humour, laughter, drama and most of all it shows us that Dreams can come true, sometimes from the least unexpected source.

What a wonderful book, and start to what is set to be a great series, that took me on a trip down memory lane. Goodbye Ruby Tuesday opens, quite appropriately, on the day of Ruby’s funeral back in her home town which, because of her stardom (think Amy Winehouse), is turning into a media circus with everyone wanting their five minutes of fame, other than Evie, Mollie and Chelsea who just want to say goodbye to their friend, Ruby Montgomery.

Ten years prior; Ruby, Evie, Mollie and Chelsea were as thick as thieves, getting into all sorts of trouble in their dead-end town that no one seemed to leave, just accepted their fate and existed – so all 4 girls were determined to leave and do something with their lives. Ruby’s escape route led her to the bright lights of London and whilst the girls drifted apart, she never forgot about them and their shared dream so she has left them her remaining lease on a studio in London to finally achieve it.

It is in London that we are introduced to Evelyn, the enigmatic owner of the studio that Ruby has left them and Killian, the grumpy carpenter who has one of the studios and is far too used to his own company. What ensues is a funny and heartwarming story of friendships being reformed and hard work to achieve what they have always dreamt of.

Whilst generally told from Evie’s perspective, the narrative is taken back 10 years and we hear directly from Ruby which is a nice touch to the story.

I truly loved Goodbye Ruby Tuesday and, as a result, moved straight onto Nice Day For A White Wedding which I read in a day. A.L. Michael’s writing is fantastic and so down to earth, I especially loved Evie with her dry sense of humour and sarcastic nature.

I have to say this is the first book I have read by A.L Michael although her Christmas book is loitering on my kindle. I was thrilled to be invited to join the #TheHouseonCamdenSquare tour because it gave me the push I needed to experiment. It’s difficult being a blogger trying to fit so many books in and I’m sure so many excellent ones go under my radar.

Anyway what did I think of Goodbye Ruby Tuesday (I keep singing the song!) this book starts off with the departure of Ruby and the re-meeting of old friends, Evie, Mollie and Chelsea as they prepare to say goodbye to their friend. It could so easily have begun and ended right there but this is where the story cleverly unfolds and the women re-acquaint themselves and strive to carry out Ruby’s plans.

A lovely tale of how a group of friends from school days have grown up and apart but are able to come back together in that way true friendship enables.

All the characters had some likeable quality but my favourite had to be Killian, perhaps I’m biased preferring the hunk! Esme the precocious daughter of Mollie was a bit of a struggle for me to warm to.

An easy read, good entertainment, based on friendship, romance and an uplifting feel. This is the first in a series so I will be interested to see what comes next.

Thanks to the author and Sara Veal/Carina for the ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

My thoughts:

The characters in this book were well written and lots of fun. Evie was instantly likeable with a no nonsense attitude but also with a little bit of vulnerability mixed in. I loved all of the interactions between Evie, Mollie and Esme. I think it took me a little bit longer to warm to Chelsea. However by the end I couldn’t wait to read her story in the next book. I fell a little bit for Killian myself especially as his past is revealed.

The story moves quickly and after pretty much the first chapter I was hooked. There were no slow parts and this book definitely kept my interest. I really enjoyed the concept of this book it was kind of sad in a way that a group of friends had lost touch. However this story brings hope for the future too especially if you are willing to give it your best shot.

I loved the flashbacks that were dotted throughout the book. It was a lovely way to see how their friendship was back when they were teenagers. I became that immersed in the story that Goodbye Ruby Tuesday almost felt like I was reminiscing with old friends.

Overall:

If you love a story about friendship, love and new beginnings this book is perfect for you!

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday is charming, fun and very entertaining!

Five stars from me!

Thank you to A. L. Michael, Carina UK & Netgalley for my copy to read and review. This is my honest opinion.

A really enjoyable read with great characters, not quite as fluffy as I thought it would be, there was some real grit to the characters which I really loved.

The story is about four friends from school, who all lived on a really rough estate, who had dreams of getting out and making it big in their various arty ways. The one who made it the biggest was Ruby, who had a glittering headline filling career, not always for the right reasons, as a singer.

Ruby has now died, far too early, and left the remaining lease on a studio in Camden to her three friends, Evie, Mollie and Chelsea, with the hope that they'd finally fulfill their dreams too.

This was a really great read about taking a chance and trying to change your life... and of course there were trials and tribulations along the way while trying to get the studio up and running so it could provide them with an income so they could continue to stay there.

The main character in this book was Evie, but as it is the first in a new series I can't wait to hear Mollie and Chelsea's stories too. Very enjoyable and highly recommended.

After the death of their friend Ruby Tuesday, 3 friends reunite to pursue Ruby's wish of opening an arts centre in London.

A fresh take on women's fiction, with a good dollop of 90s nostalgia. I think this is one of A. L Michael's best books to date, and I can't wait to read the second book in the series.
