Gothic fairy tales with sharp characters and dialogue, and gorgeous art grace these vignettes of romance, humor, horror, and sorrow. Unrequited love, social treachery, bad goth poetry, and monsters under the bed lure you in with daring imagery and a rich, dark atmosphere.
Serena Valentino is best known for weaving tales that combine mythos and guile with her work on the comic book series GloomCookie and Nightmares & Fairy Tales, and her best selling Disney Villain Novels which have earned her critical acclaim for her unique style of storytelling, bringing her readers into exquisitely frightening worlds filled with terror, beauty and extraordinary female protagonists.
Her Disney Villain novel series would be best enjoyed if read in this order: Fairest of All: The Story of the Wicked Queen, The Beast Within: The Story of Belle’s Prince, Poor Unfortunate Soul: A Tale of the Sea Witch, Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy. Mother Knows Best: A Tale of the Old Witch and The Odd Sisters: A Villains Book to be released in Summer 2019. Book 7 will be out Summer 2020, Book 8 summer of 2021, and Book 9 Summer of 2022.
Serena lives in New Orleans with her dog Gozer, and a very tiny kitty named Momma.
This fun little graphic novel is a curious book to rate because although I enjoyed it, I ended up reading it thinking of other people who would not only enjoy the book but love it. It's like watching an arrow pass you by, hit your mark but fully knowing that it will hit someone else's mark. In short, this book wasn't intended for me. Sure, I enjoyed it but I know full well some teen will read this and it will become one of their favorite works. It's random, quirky, curious, clever, fun, at times sappy and mopey as teenage years can be and actually quite unique.
Lex and Damion are bound by love but separated by a curse imposed by Isabella. It's a tad complicated at times to keep up, but not in a bad way. Characters are memorable and fun and I'm sure that although I didn't love every time Alexia said oogie, someone will be tickled pink by it. So if you want something random to add to your TBR and like light hearted fun, this one might be fun for ya.
I’ve stated in other reviews that I’m a sucker for black and white comics. My opinion still stands. When compared to the first volume, I didn’t enjoy this one as much. The artwork wasn’t the same and the typos were killing me, but I enjoyed the storyline and plan to continue the series.
Lovely graphic novel! I love that every single goth archetype is represented here, and beautifully drawn! GAWJUSS!! I love this series. It's one of my favorites & takes a place of honor of being on the shelf that is closest to my bed & therefore the most often read.
However, the one thing I have to complain about is that at times the plot tends to jump around & many key elements are either skipped (like the scene where Lex finally agrees to go out with Damion) or randomly introduced (like a certain character in the 4th volume who starts a war) without any previous mention. The artwork tends to change per volume, but even though I have my artist preferences the artwork is still fun & fits the tone of the storyline.
I recommend this series heartily, I just wish that Valentino could have fleshed it out just a wee bit more so the storyline was a bit smoother (and so we could have more Gloom Cookie).
What starts as more of a stream of consciousness type of unrelated seeming stories in the first volume really begin to gel in this second volume. Fantastical backstories on additional characters show the glimmer of originality and uniqueness of this series. I enjoyed the first two novels equally - but that doesn't take into account that they are much more than the parts of their whole and big picture of the story becomes clear.
A really interesting, unique, original, and well done series that makes the most of a non linear but interconnected plot.
Gloom Cookie was the last comic book that I collected. I ended up stopping collecting though when it moved away from stories of the Goths to a very fairy tale and surreal storyline. However, this second collection seemed most back to the goth world, with only a few fairy tale like stories, that actually fitted very well. I think this is the best comic about Goths I’ve read. The woman clearly has spent a lot of years in the subculture and knows the right things to make fun of. (Including the cam!) I enjoyed this collection much more than I was expecting and it made me want to go back and finish the rest of the series.
Gloom Cookie II A deeper exploration into the history behind the stories of Lex and Damian and Sebastian and Chrys. Also, Vermillion. Yuck. I’m looking forward to reading more about the Gloom Cookie world.
