About the author

German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).

Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.

This jurist and mythologist also authored the monumental German Dictionary and his Deutsche Mythologie .

Nothing remains hidden from God

Great story! Of course it's Grimm Brothers' work we are talking about.

STORY, in short
The kingdom is threatened by a wild bore. So the king offers a huge price for whom who will kill that beast. But nobody gets ready. After that he offers her daughter's hand in marriage to whom who will kill the beast.
Then two brothers gets ready. The younger one kills the beast but the elder one kills his younger brother and tells the king that he has killed the beast by showing him the beast's body and the weapon. So he marries the king's daughter.
After few years, a shepherd finds a bone of his younger brother. He makes the mouth-piece out of it. When he plays the bone's mouth-piece, the bone begins to claim who has killed him. The Shepherd shows this to the king and finds the body of younger brother. Then the killer is executed.

Excellently written with a great moral.

بنابر افسانه یونانی شکار گراز کالدونیا، وقتی بنا به درخواست پادشاه، کمپینی برای شکار یک گراز تشکیل می‌شود، این دختری به نام آتلانتا است که موفق می‌شود تا رقبا رو شکست دهد، گراز را شکار کند و پوستین را صاحب شود. اما تعدادی از رقبا تلاش می‌کنند تا آنرا پوستین را از او گرفته و به او بی‌احترامی می‌کنند.
بنابراین پادشاه، ملاگر آنها را می‌کشد.
جناب گراهام اندرسون هم معتقد است که قصه استخوانی که آواز سر داد، ریشه در این داستان دارد.

اما حالا ماجرای قصه چیست؟
سر و کله یک گراز در جنگل پیدا می‌شود و پادشاه اعلان می‌کند که هر کسی گراز را شکار کند، به عنوان جایزه با دخترش ازدواج می‌کند.
پس وقتی پسر تنبل و ضعیف، گراز را شکار میکند، دو برادر دیگر او را میکشند، پوستین را تصاحب کرده و پادشاه را می‌فریبند.
اما چندین سال بعد، بعد از لو رفتن ماجرا، آنها کشته می‌شوند.

برخلاف اندرسون، من فکر میکنم که این ماجرا، شکار گراز و حسادت احتمالی رقبا چنان موضوع معمولی در آن دوران و جوامع کشاورز بوده است که هیچ بعید نیست که قصه از ماجراهایی واقعی الهام گرفته شده باشد.

A very short story. More of a parable than Fairy Tale, similar to Cane and Abel

This story put me a bit in mind of the Bonny Swan song/tale. Here, two brothers go to hunt a terrifying boar that is plaguing the land. The younger brother, because he is kind, is given a special spear and succeeds in killing the monstrous beast. However, the elder brother becomes jealous and kills his brother, taking the dead boar and telling the king that he had slain the beast. So he weds the princess and lives contentedly for a few years. However, a shepherd finds a small bone and uses it as a mouthpiece for his trumpet — and the bone sings a sad tale on its own. This is a interesting story in that there's no real happy ending. The younger brother remains dead, the eldest brother does get his comeuppance, but you have to wonder about the poor princess.

I never heard of The Singing Bone but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It showed two sides of life. An innocent and pure side and an evil and devious side. Meaning how people can be deceiving like the elder brother was to his younger brother. How people can be greedy and do not care who they hurt. I gave this tale 4 stars because it deserves 4 stars. I would give more if it was longer but as it was not very detailed, it is just under the 5 star rating for me. Definitely a keeper.

It is different but not that different from what you might remember from first hearing this tale as a kid.

The plot here are very good but also dark which is the mix which I personally like a lot.

The writing style here was very old and you could feel the vibe of old the Europe which was amazing for me.

I think this one went too dark for a children's tale, but aside of it, I very much liked it.
Just as my mother use to say: "En esta vida todo se sabe", which stands to something like "Nothing in this life remains untold". Sooner or later, truth always prevails.

I just finished The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins, and had learned that that story was inspired by The Grimm Brothers' Fairytale, The Singing Bone. I was curious about the source material, to see what migrated its way into Wendy Higgins' story. It also didn't hurt that this fairytale was so short, that makes reading the source material a given.
I can definitely see what was taken from the original and put in The Great Hunt. It was pretty much just the background concept of the Fairytale. A Great beast prowling and murdering in a kingdom, a king who promises his daughter's hand in marriage to whoever kills it, and two brothers setting out for the hunt. The differences were that one brother was good and the other was very bad.
One interesting thing I found out, through the website I found the story on, is that there was a first draft and a final draft. In the first draft there were three brothers and the story was told more to the point. In the final draft, it was changed to two brothers, with more fairytale-esque writing and a much bloodier end.
I enjoyed this Fairytale. One day, I want to immerse myself fully in the Brother's Grimm Tales. Just get a book full of them and read at my leisure. They are very dark.

I have the complete set of the Grimm Fairy-Tales, and there are so many that I haven’t read! They are very short, as one would know, so I have decided to read each one and give them a review. Some are very vulgar, some are very cute and some don’t even make sense. Some of them are well known fairy-tales and some have never been told. Some are fairy-tales we know but are not the same because they have been downplayed for the children.

Two brothers, one honest and one prideful, sought out to kill a boar who terrorized the land. The king said whoever brings him this killer boar shall have his only daughter as his bride.

The honest brother sought out and achieved.

The prideful brother saw and deceived and took and killed….

But will he get away with it?

This story is a good lesson one to read.
