JOE HARRIS is the co-creator and writer of original comics and graphic novels such as the Image Comics rock ‘n’ roll thrill ride, Rockstars, and the environmental sci-fi epics, Great Pacific and Snowfall; along with the supernatural thrillers, Ghost Projekt and Spontaneous, and the children’s fantasy, Wars In Toyland, for Oni Press. In 2013, Joe began a long stint writing the officially-licensed continuation of the paranormal investigations of Agents Mulder and Scully in The X-Files comics at IDW to the enjoyment of fans around the world. The X-Files: Cold Cases—the best-selling audio dramatization of Joe’s comics scripts featuring the voices of David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and the entire original X-Files cast—and the follow-up, The X-Files: Stolen Lives were released by Audible beginning in 2017.

As a young creator at Marvel Comics, Joe launched the cult-classic Spider-Man spinoff, Slingers and the Bishop: The Last X-Man series. He has written for just about all major comics publishers including DC Comics, Marvel, Image, IDW, Dark Horse, Valiant, BOOM! and others.

A horror screenwriter and filmmaker, Harris conceived and co-wrote Darkness Falls for Sony Pictures—after his short film, Tooth Fairy was acquired by Revolution Studios and he was hired to develop it into a feature—along with the politically farcical slasher movie, The Tripper for FOX. In 2018, he co-wrote the live-action web series, Ninjak vs. the Valiant Universe for Valiant Entertainment.

His latest project is Surviving Nuclear Attack, a paranoid sci-fi thriller, set to launch in 2019 as part of John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction from Storm King Comics.

The story here is quite intriguing and keept me guessing to the end. The main thread of it was mixing flashes from our time with:

-15. century original Vlad Tepesh timeline, where he is called to defend his country and faith from Ottoman invaders. Here he earns his name 'The Impaler'.

-19. century Victorian timeline where Jonathan Harker visits Castle Dracula, fights to survive and rescue his fiancee.

-Modern time where all key players go through old pattern with a horrible feeling like they are missing something crucial and like they did all of this before.

As they go through it all jet again and remember bits and pieces, a plot that stretches from way pack in the past is revealed.

The artwork is beautiful and atmospheric. I was staring at various panels long after I read it:)

I'm giving this 4,5 stars. Its way better than 4 stars but not quite 5. The main reason for this is that it takes a long time to set up its story.

This was a comic that I'd wanted for a couple years now and I was curious as to why it was rated fairly low. Now I know why. It's all over the place! Criss crossing between three time lines doesn't work well for such a short narrative. Had they just plunked Vampirella in 1897 and kept her there I'd have enjoyed this a lot more.

What A Mess

This story was a hot mess. I'd vaguely remembered Vampirella interacting with Dracula before, and thought the premise of becoming entangled in his story to be interesting.

But this -- this was confusingly muddled. The story jumps around and it is poorly explained. Non linear magic, yaaaay. The why of things happening felt weak. It felt way more like Jonathan Harker's story than either Dracula or Vampirella's.

The sexualized violence was pretty gross. Can't say I was shocked that some was lifted straight out of an Alan Moore comic. Ooof. I do not want to read anything else with his name on it.

I do not recommend. It's a mess of a story, and it's not particularly amazing at showcasing either of its headliners -- they're there, but not up to anything great overall. There's nothing all that appealing about it, so I'd give it a pass.

Rather convoluted.
Now, this is only my second outing with Vampirella; my first was Dark Shadows/Vampirella.
I had a few issues with this one because the plot was a little confusing and it seemed like they were just going to replay the classic Dracula narrative. But then it got better. I did think it was wonderful, but it was enjoyable.
Personally, though, I enjoyed Dark Shadows/Vampirella more.

I didn't like this one as much as I hoped I would. The story somewhat confusing and artwork isn't quite to my taste. The original 1997 Alan Moore story on which this volume is based is reprinted as a bonus. This is a baffling decision, as the entirety of that story is incorporated into issue one. Final verdict: meh.

I didn't have high expectations for this series, but it was still a very disappointing read. The story is a mess with back and forth time travel. Or is it multi-verse? I don't care.

I got this via the The Boys vs The Girls Humble Bundle.

A spin-off of Alan Moore’s “New European,” Vampirella vs. Dracula is a confusing time travel adventure. When Dracula seeks to break free of the cycle of lost love and death that he’s stuck in, the Order of the Dragon shifts reality to attempt to force Vampirella to take his place. The story is hard to follow at times with all the switches between time periods and characters changing roles. Yet it’s an interesting exploration of fate and breaking free of cyclical patterns. But Vampirella seems forced into the story in a contrived way and doesn’t really bring much to it. However, the artwork is solid and is able to be sexy and violent without being gratuitous. Vampirella vs. Dracula has some problems, but overall it presents an intriguing take on the Dracula mythos.

A mind trip into the world of Dracula. What would happen if Dracula didn't want to play out his story anymore?
Beautiful art, interesting story.

Way too convoluted and nonsensical.
