Doomsday: A Remy Jones Adventure

Rate this book
The magicians have been exiled, no one dare speak of the half-men who roam the territories in the dead of night, and a wall protects the metropolis of Bal’Mor from the cities that have kept to the old ways. Peace has reigned in Bal’Mor since the end of World War Three, thanks to the security agency, Triune. But the rise of a powerful magician, bent on revenge, threatens the safety of all.

Investigator, Remington Jones, is an exile herself. Considered a parasite by the Confederation and forced to live in The Underground with other parasites, Remy has acquired fake documents that brand her a normal and allow her to live topside, illegally.

Remy may be one of the best investigators in the Confederation, but this case taxes even her abilities. Mainly, her ability to survive. She has to outsmart a magician, destroy a few thousand zombies, and figure out why it seems Triune--the organization that's supposed to be protecting everyone--is at the center of all the unrest. Complicating matters further, in order to solve this case she has to work with Vincent Hall, the second in command at Triune, and his team of genetically enhanced humans.

NOTE: This book contains the entire first season.

My first read by this author but definitely a series I plan on picking up again. Not only was the story unique and original but the writing was well done, too. If you're looking for a breath of fresh air for your bookshelf this is it!

First, let's talk about genre. Generally speaking, this novel (which is going to be part of a series) is a mystery. At its heart the novel drops you into a puzzle of "who did it? Why did they do it? How can we stop them?" And trust me when I say you love every minute of it! Now, beyond mystery the story does incorporate several other genres heavily including fantasy, science-fiction (apocolaptic specifically), and adventure. There is a little romance but it's very minuscule (which I appreciate and will touch on later).

Of course, with a novel incorporating so many genres there is the fear that the story may be overwhelming, campy, or just plain bad. If these thoughts are entering your brain, I promise you they will not be supported by what you read in this writing. The author does such a great job of creating a universe that is both fantasy and scifi but with the right checks and balances. The fantasy aspect comes in because there are magic users in the story and they play a crucial role in the plot. The science fiction comes in because the story takes place over 50 years in the future and so the technology used is very futuristic. Additionally, the social hierarchy set in this story is founded on the devastation of WWIII.

The adventure aspect comes in with the traveling to "new and mysterious" lands; the lands of the unknown. And, of course, the romance is just that- a romance. Nothing extremely different in that but I will say I loved the male character. The fact that the author stepped away from the traditional romance male protagonist and didn't make him super-macho was new and exciting. He both followed and lead the female protagonist, making their relationship more modern and equal.

The fact the author chose to focus on the story and not the romance drew me in even more as a reader. The author didn't try to push the two characters together. She more so let it happen naturally and took the route of "when the time is right, the time will be right." There were points near the end it did get a little corny but overall the romance didn't overshadow the mystery and our lead character was not a woman destined/looking to fall in love or some extreme tough girl who lived on a sob story. She was a woman with a job, with goals, and with a mission. Flat out.

I'll end the review here. I highly recommend this novel, especially for anyone who is looking for something that incorporates multiple genres very well, incorporates minority characters, a mystery that will leave you wanting more, and takes a modern approach to romance.

3.5 stars, rounded up for Goodreads.

I feel like this could have been great, but there was SO much going on, that I was a bit overwhelmed. It's post apocalyptic, future, paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi all at once. While I liked the main characters, I felt we weren't given much description of them, or the era they were living in.

How did the world become above ground, with a whole other world under ground? How were the areas separated, what caused all of it? I wanted more background information on all of it.

There were also people who have magic, zombies, half human characters, demons, people with powers who aren't magicians and normal people. Again I just felt like there was a lot going on, and wished it would have taken more direct route to get to the plot.

The writing itself was great, just wanted a more streamlined plot with the story.

3.5 — I'd probably give it four but urban fantasy is a tough sell for me.
Not that it's just urban fantasy. The fun part is that King has mashed up so much stuff together: a post-WW III setting, a superhero team and a typical UF hardboiled investigator in the middle of it. The mix makes it much more interesting than it would have been in a regular setting. And there are some nice plot twists mixed in with the stuff I expect (protagonist Remy falling for a stunningly good looking, possibly Bad Boy).

***THIS BOOK WAS PROVIDED TO NERD GIRL IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***

Doomsday, A Remy Jones Adventure by Heather Elizabeth King is a compilation of the 4 episodes comprising the first season of the story.

Remy grew up as a "parasite"--someone not entirely human. But she could pass as "normal", and did. Until she took a job investigating other parasites disappearing from Triume, and corporation responsible for the Peace Keepers.

Remy finds out the truth of her parentage, and abilities, while trying to save people from an insane Mage and power-hungry CEO.

Absolutely full-5-stars! I hope there is more to come!

A very good book. I really enjoyed it.

Opens with a bang, right at the start. Part paranormal little sci fi. All and a must read if you like to read a novel that never let's up.
