One year ago Trent's life was on track. Then his horse went lame, his relationship soon followed, and his replacement horse, Dove, proved to be mean as a snake. Unable to sell a mean horse, and unwilling to send her to the knackers, Trent's last chance is take Dove to a rehab center.

Richard has just moved to his grandfather's ranch, after trying four other places and succeeding at none of them because he might be good at rehabilitating horses, but nobody wants him doing it unless he plays straight, and he's damned tired of hiding he's gay.

When Richard sees the pride sticker on Trent's truck, it almost seems too good to be true—especially when Trent returns his interest. And in the aftermath of their encounter, it seems he was right...

Barbara didn’t learn that she had lived in three out of the four Northern Alberta towns that had a known or suspected Wendigo attack until well after she’d moved south to Lethbridge. She grew up loving ghost stories and pony books, and spent most of her summers on the British Columbia coast, where she fell in love with the ocean.

As Angela Fiddler, she has written The Master of the Lines series as well as Cy and his sex demon problem books. As Barbara Geiger, she has written The Tempest trilogy, starting with Coral Were his Bones, which exists in the same universe as the Middlehill series, starting with Changeling, as well as various other novellas and short stories.

When she’s not following the exploits of selkies, sex demons and vampires, she writes epic fantasy and makes the occasional foray into science fiction and short stories.

Checking Into Sodom is a short story about Richard, whose parents shipped him off to four different conversion camps - to get rid of the gay - before he said enough and went to live with his grandfather, and Trent, a lost cowboy trying to find his way again.

I felt their chemistry, right away, when they met, however as soon as they leave the ranch to hook up, that chemistry seemed to evaporate. Richard is a virgin and he talks a lot. I imagine he was nervous, but he wouldn't shut up. He came off as desperate to get fucked, he didn't ever really care by whom. In fact, he said as much. He's young and could easily find himself a boyfriend when he moves to Calgary, but he seems to be in a rush to take care of that virginity thing right now. So they have sex, but I didn't find it interesting at all.

There's more awkwardness after that, and they go their separate ways, until Richard has an excuse to seek Trent out, and they decide to pursue a relationship. I didn't really buy it, though.

There is potential in this story, but like with many stories this short, it failed to keep my interest. I think if it were expanded upon, it could be quite good, however.

For something so short, I found myself pulled into this story remarkably well. It all moved a bit fast for me personally, but the story is sweet, the characters (while not fully developed) engaging, and I would definitely read more about this couple.
