When Debbie de La Fontaine tries to spice up her love life by supernaturally tampering with her sex life, she is cursed to spend every future encounter in a magical place called “Sex Hell,” where the sex is ludicrous and amazing but the romance is scarce. Her only chance for escape is through the stingy clues supplied by an obnoxious demon, and the only way to obtain the clues is by returning to Sex Hell again and again to have outrageous sexcapades with the man she most wants to avoid—or does she? Sex Hell is an absurd comic fantasy about the confusion of relationships. How is love related to sex, and how is sex related to love—and do love and sex need to be related at all? If you’re a fan of authors like Christopher Moore, Douglas Adams, Tom Robbins, Robert Rankin, or Terry Pratchett, give Sex Hell a try! *This book contains profanity and adult situations*
I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I had previously read this author's other book, Magno Girl, and found it to be interesting and different. Sex Hell was also very interesting and unlike anything I've ever read. It's fun, absurd, and just plain weird at times, but it you like that kind of stuff then you will like this book.

Waitress and aspiring writer, Debbie de La Fontaine has a lot of sexual requirements. Some would call them hang ups, but she is the way she is. Her boyfriend Mike cares about her and he tries to fulfill her every need, but Debbie would usually rather eat popcorn and read a good book instead of have sex. When a witch offers her a chance to spice up her sex life with a spell, Debbie gives it a try. What she didn’t think about was whether the witch was on the up and up. Now Debbie’s stuck in Sex Hell with musician Juan Carlos and they’re scrambling to fix their mutual problem before Mike finds out. But Mike has secrets of his own. Things are about to get interesting.
This is a goofy, humorous, sometimes sexy and an occasionally eye roll-worthy tale of sex, love, relationships and expectations. Debbie is a bit neurotic when it comes to sex. She’s so whiny sometimes I just want to smack her upside the head. Juan has his own quirks and so do Mike and Debbie’s best friend, Cynthia. The villain in this piece, the witch Velva (I kept calling her Vulva in my head), is a caricature of epic proportions. I love Carl the demon and Peach Blossom, Velva’s sister. The sex scenes are quite creative. I know the title is Sex Hell and there’s plenty of sex involved, but it’s not graphically described which is nice because sometimes I like to leave stuff to my imagination. If you’re looking for an absurd paranormal love story that has flawed characters, funny sidekicks, dumbass villains and sexy role playing ideas then this is an entertaining read you won’t want to miss.
Joe Canzano is known to write a funny book, but Sex Hell has jumped passed funny and into the hilarious realm. From page one I was cracking up. We meet Debbie who is as uninterested in sex as any one human can be. I love her best friend Cynthia. I need a Cynthia in my life. Their dialogue is realistic, snarky, and perfect.
A haggard witch enters the picture who wants to do some shady dealings with Debbie, promising her a better sex life. This is when all hell breaks loose. Readers also have the pleasure of meeting beefcake Juan Carlo, loyal (and mysterious) boyfriend, Mike, and the evil forces from the other side.
If you need to laugh about sex, life, and the absurdity of it all, then you need Sex Hell. It will not disappoint unless you don't laugh often, but otherwise, you'll love it! 5 stars!
This is the second book I've had the extreme pleasure of being able to review for Joe Canzano. Sex Hell is a wild, funny, dark, complex and erotic romp through the love life of our key character Debbie, as she tries to figure a way out of the supernatural mess she has created for herself. I can't say enough great things about Mr. Canzano's newest spellbinder, other than he has definitely became one of my favorite writers! Not for the timid, this is a book that you better be wearing your big people pants for. But do yourself a solid and grab this book, quick! you'll be happy that you did. I certainly am. FIVE BIG BRIGHT SHINING STARS.
This story is funny, original, well-written, and highly enjoyable. At times, I actually burst out laughing. I loved the way the characters so clearly depicted the stereotypical traits of each sex. Except for one major mistake, the author, through his character portrayal showed an excellent understanding of women (I can't tell you the mistake because it would include a major spoiler).
Has Debbie found the one, the love of her life, in boyfriend Mike? Although they work well together outside the bedroom, if truth be told she’d much rather eat popcorn, and read and write her novel than get it on with him! Is there something wrong with her? Or, are they just not compatible?
Sex Hell begins as I would expect a contemporary romance to. However, the story takes a special turn when Velva turns up. After overhearing Debbie express her concerns to her colleague and best friend, Cynthia, in a diner Velva decides to offer Debbie a deal: in exchange for some years from Debbie’s life, Velva promises super, hot sex for Debbie. Not only is this a preposterous idea that Debbie initially turns down, it is also tempting after more time spent trying to avoid sex with Mike, and with a little negotiation.
“I’ve got a desire to be younger, okay? And you’ve got a desire to have better sex. And for a small price, I can fix your problem. All I want is a little bit of your youth. Gimme about ten or twenty years; lets call it fifteen. In exchange for that, I’ll fix your sex life. No more awkward fumbling around. No more faking orgasms – oh! oh! oh! And no more having to do anything you don’t want to do. Hell, you can just eat snack food all night and read a book, and he’ll be happy as a pig in a pie store. And you won’t have to die alone.” – Velva
With many enlightened moments, there is a great sense of fun in Sex Hell. The dialogue is brilliant, and the whole story is a fast-paced, exciting read. Debbie’s personal thoughts are often comical and full of humour, despite her sex life concerns.
A love triangle develops early on as the one Debbie finds herself with in Sex Hell is musician, Juan. Juan plays guitar in bars and has had relations with many women. Although, there doesn’t seem to have been anyone special in his recent past. That said, he is a hot lover, and boy does Debbie know it! With feelings of guilt after, and wanting to build on her relationship with Mike, she finds it increasingly more difficult returning to Sex Hell and having many sexcapades with Juan.
The laughing demon, in monkey Carl, who just happens to be watching her sexcapades does seem to offer advice on how to end Velva’s spell. However, the reader is never too sure on who’s side he is on, and whether he is sending Debbie and Juan on a wild goose chase. To make matters worse, Mike and Cynthia are on their tail, and there are moments when they look a little too cosy.
There’s just no telling if the spell will ever be lifted, and just who Debbie wants to be with. What will become of Velva and the demon? What will become of Debbie? This fantasy adventure ends with plenty of paranormal action and will leave the reader on a high with its comical undercurrent. Definitely a read to perk you up and put a smile on your face!
The story is well written and flows easily for the reader. The characters are not deeply developed, however they are very likable through the story. The story concludes well and gives a closure that doesn't really leave room for a sequel. The book is best suited for young adult, or any age that has an open and sexual imagination that is not looking for extreme erotica. I would read from this author again.
I'm tempted to say 'Oh hell no!' Yes, I read the blurb, and I know it wasn't going to be stellar enlightening stuff. I did expect light ness and fun ... but what I got was silly that was bearable at first but then went into 'ridiculous' territory all too quickly and well, a train wreck waiting to happen. Sadly, was a DNF as I couldn't waste more time on such ludicrous sex scenes.
Ok, after sleeping on it, I downgraded this to one star. Maybe I didn't truly appreciate that this was in the "romance" genre, but it was pretty horrifically cliche. The storyline was predictable, the characters were mere caricatures of well overused stereotypes. I found nothing about this book funny, satirical or insightful. It was merely trite.
This is a weird book. Fairly well written but bizarre scenes that require complete suspension of reality. It's mostly silly but has a fun element that keeps you reading, unless you're a guy, which means you're looking forward to the sex scenes, which are x-rated. Women won't like the sex scenes and men will be bored with the love story. Weird book.
Oh yeah, that was definitely a laugh a minute, pants tightening 5*s. Everything in this story worked, the characters were so loveable, the situations so laugh worthy, and I got to practice my German. Oh, and being a Jersey native helped.
This is a truly original and unique book. Not like anything I’ve read before. I find the main character very relatable, although there’s a strong fantasy element going on. Although it can be silly and humorous, there are real issues about love, relationships, and attraction. Highly recommend!
My biggest issue with the book is the concept wears thin really quickly. I think there’s a 5/5 short story in here and I was loving the concept for half of it but once we started to get to the end I was just waiting for the finale
Wild story that’s more about love than sex. It’s got some really fun fantasy elements and is humorous but behind the laughs are some keen insights on human relationships.
Debbie is a nerdy writer who struggles to get excited in her love life. 'She loves sex' but 'hates sex with other people'. In fact, Debbie tends to get over anxious every time her boyfriend Mike suggests that he comes over. Frustrated with her sex life, Debbie visits a witch and makes a deal with her in order to enjoy her time in the bedroom. However, when she and her coincidently new found sex partner, Juan, break their deal with the witch, they find themselves in sex hell. A brand new setting each time, where they end up with each other, no matter who they were planning to be with at the time...The story follow the two misfits as they try to escape Sex Hell and it's demon, Carl, while forming an unlikely bond.
I honestly don't know whether to say I enjoyed this story or not, because I actually don't know. There were some parts where I was hooked. The beginning, where we met Debbie and found out some of her fetishes, 'books and popcorn', was really funny. The banter between her and Juan were also brilliant. But other parts were just so random that it got a little dull. For example, the needless appearance of three German Soldiers, which frustrated me so much after their third or fourth appearance that I would flick through their parts. I'm all up for random stories with witches and demons called Carl. But to me, the soldiers and their stupid accents 'took ze peas a little bat'.
I really liked the majority of the characters in this story. They all had their own personalities, and thought processes which was great. I thought that Carl the demon was really funny. You can't just call him Carl...it's Carl the demon. He's probably one of the best antagonizing characters that I've read recently. His battle between being an evil demon and wanting to help Debbie and Juan due to his hatred of Velva the witch was quite funny. Debbie's profession of being a writer was also fit in well in the book. Her recurring character Suzy Spitfire was usually quite amusing and the ending of the story (related but I won't spoil) was really enjoyable too. I didn't see it coming.
But, like I said. I developed a real hatred for the stupid Stroms ( I don't actually know what a strom is or why they were called strom, but they were the German Soldiers). Not because of their well written villainous characters but just because their appearances were so random. Others may have found this really funny but it just wasn't for me in that sense. I thought that the story would have been much better without them. The dialogue in the story annoyed me at parts too. Some parts of the story flowed perfectly with really entertaining banter and puns. Whereas there were some points (Stroms, looking mainly at you but not just), seemed really forced and I couldn't imagine anybody ever saying things, it was almost like the author wasn't too sure of what to say in dialogue, so just added this line and that.
If the theme of this wasn't mature, I would think that this was a children's book. Just because of the style of writing, humor in the dialogue and pure randomness of the story. I don't personally know anyone who'd like this story but I can imagine that those who are really into fantasies - witches, wizards and strange German soldiers, would find this quite appealing.
I will agree that the story is genius. I really liked the plot. But certain parts of it, for me did let it down a little.
I expected something much like the last book I read, the Mango Girl text. Filled with clever witty humour, action, steamy love, and a fabulous real look at life and all the bullshit we glaze over.
This book was more like a romance novel with an incompetent special magic agent, a thing for Nazi Germans, and by the last twenty pages I'd lost interest because the final battle just seemed to drag on. I laughed in the first few pages but found it wasn't really a funny book, more a 'what the' book. Some of the sex hell scenes I felt more like I was reading D grade porn, but if a girl has a fantasy then she can't help it right.
I have to be totally honest in that I felt a little let down. The idea was novel, a sex hell. The author was intimate with his knowledge on the body issues many women face and the lack of confidence and self esteem. So points there for that. I didn't like the Nazi references though. They seemed misplaced and a dig at Germans. I liked the portrayal for the witch and the idea of sex magic. If the ending was tighter and more focused it would have potentially grabbed 4 stars instead of the 3 awarded.
Overall, it was good enough to keep me reading right up to the end. I didn't get bored, I liked the cover and it flowed well and was easily digestible.
If you read the Mango Girl book before considering this one, I'd love to hear to see if anyone felt the same. I hope Joe goes back to Mango style. That's what I fell in love with about his writing, and I think the previous reading heavily influenced my expectations of this text.
Would I gladly read another book from Joe? I think so. I think now that I have a better grasp on how different his books can be from one to the next, I will be more open minded and a clean slate rather than having expectations.
Thanks go to Joe for the opportunity to be a part of reviewing another of his books.

Semi neurotic girl in New Jersey who doesn’t enjoy sex with her boyfriend makes a dumb deal with a bad witch to spice things up in the bedroom. Too bad she didn’t specify with who. . . The gist of it: “I’ve got a desire to be younger, okay? And you’ve got a desire to have better sex. And for a small price, I can fix your problem. All I want is a little bit of your youth. Gimme about ten or twenty years; let’s call it fifteen. In exchange for that, I’ll fix your sex life. No more awkward fumbling around. No more faking orgasms— oh! oh! oh! And no more having to do anything you don’t want to do.” And that’s before we’re introduced to Suzy Spitfire. The good news: the price gets talked down. the bad news: there’s a catch on the back end, of course. The best thing going for this book is that there’s plenty of humor, especially when the Road Trip with Benefits hits the highway. Despite her silliness, I like Debbie, although that comes with the realization that, had she existed in real life, she’d be dead several times over. This also has one of the strangest antagonists ever, but considering all the sex, violence, and demons, the tone is incredibly light and fluffy. It’s a fun read, and that’s all that matters.
"I received this book as an uncorrected bound proof copy direct from the author in exchange for an honest review"
When I was contacted and presented with the opportunity by the author to review his new book Sex Hell, I was like yes please. If it’s as good as one of his previous books “Manga Girl” that I’ve been lucky enough to read and review, then I knew that I was hopefully in for a treat ….. and once again “Sex hell” is totally out of the box. Once again, having now got around to reading Sex Hell, I can say that Canzano has created a lively and vibrant array of characters, with a matching story line to boot. With quiet the love square between Debbie, Mike, Juan and Cynthia as they all get mixed up in aspects and consequences of Debbie and Juan ending up in Sex Hell. The book does contain profanity and adult situations (but don’t let that put you off), however the scenes have been written in a light hearted comical way that doesn’t put you off reading as they are very ludicrous and out of this world at times (promise that wasn’t a slight hint there ;) ) Definitely an absurd, but yet enjoyable comic fantasy.
This is the first romantic comedy I have read. For those who enjoy this genre, I'm sure this will be a hilarious delight. Since I have no novels to compare it too-I would say it reminded me of an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. In my head, there was canned laughter and everything. If you are weary of reading this due to the "sex" which is implied in the title, rest assured, this book does not read like an erotica. It's silly sex scenes, that I think daytime television could get away with.
The book starts off in one person's head, then quickly branches to several others, so it was hard to get attached to someone, but sometimes comedies are like that, bouncing around to whoever can give them the best laugh. The characters all had very strong personalities that helped me to keep track of who's head I was in.
I received "Sex Hell" for free from Sage's Blog Tours in exchange for an honest review.
Debbie de La Fontaine is unhappy with her sex life, so when she meets a witch who can spice up her sex life for her she reluctantly agrees to do what the witch wants her to do - give her her African Violet. The only problem is that she wanted this to work with her boyfriend. Now Debbie is destined to have amazing sex in a place called Sex Hell - a place where she can act out her fantasies no matter how absurd they are, with a "sleazy" man who is not her boyfriend. The only way she can escape Sex Hell is to keep returning there again and again until she can gather enough clues from Carl the demon - a floating head who shows up after the deed is done - to break the spell.
This was original and funny. The writing was really good. I found it did drag on a bit towards the end though. I loved Debbie's sarcastic comments. This is the kind of book I wouldn't normally read but I decided to try it anyway and I'm happy I did!
When the opportunity came to review Sex Hell, I was like let’s do this, it is going to be fun. To be honest, I was not disappointed because the story is really original and it really ended in a bang!!!
This is the part where I am going to be honest, pretty much for 3/4 of the book I did not like Debbie the main character at all. In fact, I really wanted to either shake her or beat some sense and self-esteem into her. Not sure which or maybe even a combo of both. Then I started thinking, when was the last time a character annoyed me as much and that will have to be Sansa Stark in the early GoT books. The girl needed a wake up call too!!
Strange, improbable and imaginative this story is definitely for those over the age of 18. But then even with the sex involved, our very geeky, anxiety and panic stricken heroine is not the usual star of a erotic novel. In fact I am not sure if this could be described as a erotic novel although it has it's moments. So what is it? Hard to say except that finding the difference between love and sex is important. Just to add spice a wicked witch, a demon and a love goddess are all involved in causing the havoc. Glad I took a chance and downloaded this book. It's clever, funny and has a few elevating moments all set into motion by a fairly original curse.
This is romantic comedy. By comedy, I mean in your face, laugh outloud. The romance is not the sweet, sentimental kind. It's more like shitty relationships, with shitty choices thrown.
Two of the main characters are having slumps in their sex life and make a deal a witch. They land themselves in Sex Hell. A place of great sex, but without all the feels. They desperately want out of their agreement with the witch, but how?
This is full of hilarius, ackward situations. If you aren't a fan of books containing graphic sex, this isn't for you. Don't go into this hoping for a sappy love story.
I recieved a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was something altogether really different from what I usually read in romance books. But that being said I really enjoyed it. It was supper hilarious and I had many laugh out loud moments reading this book. As the title is Sex Hell we don’t get the sweet, with rainbow romance story, this is the complete opposite. A couple that is in a slump when it comes to their sex life and wanting to spice it up. That leads to often award and really weird situation. But yet super funny to the reader. Overall I thought it was kind of unique and really clever funny and enjoyed it a lot. I rate it 4 ★
This book turned out to be hilarious and one of the best books I've read in a while. Debbie, my heroine, is an amazing character. I can empathise with her in most things and she's also absolutely hilarious which makes her one of my favourite characters of all time. Also, the supporting characters, Juan, Mike, Cynthia, Suzy and all the others made the plot great and the whole book just wonderful. The only thing, that I did not love about the book was the beginning. To me, it was a bit too slow-paced, but after that, this book was absolutely brilliant in all aspects.
Joe Canzano is an unusually talented writer with a unique voice who writes funny stories chock full of imagination, memorable characters, and high adventure. Joe mixes up interesting story lines sprinkled with relevant themes and social satire to keep the reader smiling and turning pages. His latest novel, “Sex Hell,” explores the universal themes of love and relationships with an entertaining cast of characters and an ingenious plot. This is the second novel I’ve read by this author. I also enjoyed his debut novel, Magno Girl.
Sex hell by Canzano is a fairly steamy expose of two couples who don't start out as couples. Debbie is the main protagonist who has trouble relating to the sex act with her guy. She goes to see a witch, Velva, but she meets another guy when they have a car accident. Sparks fly and often and we are given glimpses of Velva's push to be a glamorous movie star instead of a hag. Her wrinkles disappear as Debbie and Juan end up in sex hell every time they have sex.
You've read the synopsis and you know who the author is, so I'll tell that this book starts out really funny, then becomes entertaining rather than funny. I liked the concept but it was a bit hard to keep track of the characters in the beginning as out was jumping POVs and dry. After about a dozen chapters, it gets a lot better and overall I enjoyed it. If you want an eccentric take off love and sex, then definitely read this book.
