Excerpt from "Genesis the Reckoning"- The body on the floor was unmoving. Her hair was spread like a halo of fire around her head. Blood seeped from the slash on her cheek. The exact spot where a scar on another face once resided. Of course, that was deliberate. She wanted to see that perfect face marred by ugliness. But, that’s not how she killed her. She wrapped the chain of the locket around her neck. The locket that was promised to her. Gray eyes locked with green. Neither made a sound. She stopped pulling when the fingers clutching at the chain of the necklace dropped lifeless to the floor. The green eyes remained fixed on her. She stood looking at the locket in the palm of her hand. Its color was in stark contrast to the utter whiteness of her skin. Her lips curved. “Genesis.” The sound of her name made her turn. There stood the only friend she had, the only friend she trusted, and the friend she used for her own revenge-Mae. Genesis knew why she was there. She knew Mae had come for her. Genesis had just taken a life. Her sister wasn’t the first person to die at her hands. But, that was when she was human, or at least when she was considered human. Now, she was going to be punished. Little Mae thought she was going to punish her. It was almost funny. She heard it as it slithered to her. Genesis used to be petrified of snakes. They were her worst fear. Things were different now. She forgot about Mae as it curled around her ankles. She reached down to let the snake twine itself around her arm. Snakes were slithering, stealthy creatures. She peered into the serpent’s eyes and saw herself. The scream of anguish was a dim sound to Genesis. The swish of the sword sliced the air, and for Genesis the world faded away.
I find the concept of this book interesting, which is why I would mark it as a 3. However, there are so many typos, inconsistencies, and rough transitions that it brings it down to a 2 to 2.5. The feelings between characters vacillate between love and hate too quickly, and the appearance of some characters (like Mary Magdalene) leave me confused. I got the first book because it was free. I was interested enough in the story to pay $0.99 for the second when it went on sale, and though I would like to finish out the series, $1.99 is more than I am willing to pay for the third. The writing has been consistent through the first two books, but not great. More development is needed in some scenes, but again, it's an interesting concept. I definitely care about the characters and the story, which is always important when I read a book.
This book was interesting. I'm not a fan of religion really anymore, but I'm enjoying the twists and turns between good and evil and reading about these people, angels, and demons from the Bible in a different light. I'm glad that a lot of my questions from the first book got answered. And I'm very curious to see who is playing on what side. The thing I didn't like about this book was that it felt a bit rushed-I'm hoping that in the final book, we will get more about these new players in the game. In the end, I'm hoping Genesis will learn from history, but on the other hand I love a good villain. I can't wait to see who wins and what will end up happening to all us humans.
