When Megatron falls in battle, Starscream assumes the role of Decepticon leader on Earth. Mustering his surviving allies, he sets out to put his own plan in motion. But before he can do that, he'll need to retrieve a fallen comrade, carry out a plan of revenge, and leave the Earth to meet up with a major player in the Decepticon army. Picking up where the film ended, The Reign of Starscream also reveals the fates of other surviving film characters, as co-writers Chris Ryall and Chris Mowry present a tale of intrigue, betrayal, and dark ambition featuring both old and all-new Transformers characters.
Far better than expected comic sequel to the awesome Transformers first movie, and far better than the crappy sequels too... But for "Transformers: Dark of the moon" that was really good. Starscream is the usual asshole we know and love here, and the artist makes a real good work takin'old G1 characters like Thundercracker and redesigning them to fit Michael Bay's movie aestethic . Nice surprise.
With clever nods to previous incarnations of the franchise while still maintaining a straightforward plot, Reign of Starscream is a fun read for all Transformers fans, but especially those who enjoy the movie universe. Sometimes the characters are a bit hard to tell apart...but that is due to the design of the !movie universe, not the fault of the wickedly talented Alex Milne.
My problem is that the Allspark was supposed to be the life force of all Transformers. In the first movie, it gets destroyed. Here, Starscream just builds a new one? Kinda lame. That makes the plot of the first movie pretty silly since Megatron could have stayed home and built a new Allspark too as long as you have some Transformers to sacrifice.
Holy cow the art in this book is terrible! Never mind the bay-verse character designs (which are just the worst), but there's just so much mess going on in the panels that it is impossible to tell what is going on. Everything is just grey angles. The story: meh. Starscream does starscream stuff. he yells at underlings, he blames megatron, he runs off when things get rough. you know the drill. The one highlight was the easter egg I saw: A truck on the road had a logo that said "Latta" on it; a reference to the late, great Chris Latta who voiced both Starscream and Cobra Commander in the 80s cartoons.
This one was so so. The story felt like there were many places where it was just really thin. The artwork was hard to make out at times. Really crowded frames so it was hard to distinguish details. Plus I really don't like the way they draw the new transformers now anyways. They're so plain, not a lot of bright colors or features. You could pass this one over and not be missing anything.
