This volume focuses on Blaster, Arcee, Grimlock, Mirage, and Wheelie. Written by long-time Transformers scribe Simon Furman and screenwriter George Strayton, with art by popular Transformers artists Guido Guidi, Marcelo Matere, Alex Milne, Emiliano Santalucia, and Klaus Scherwinski.
Simon Christopher Francis Furman is a British comic book writer who is best known for his work on Hasbro/Tomy's Transformers franchise, starting with writing Marvel's initial comic book to promote the toyline worldwide, as well as foundations for both Dreamwave Production's and IDW Publishing's takes on the Generation 1 minifranchise.
Three of the five stories in this collection have little to do with the general IDW Transformers metaplot, giving it more of a satisfying anthology feel. Blaster's story is a good reinterpretation of the character with a good mystery, probably my top pick of the set. Arcee's story is certainly a distinctive approach, I don't think anyone was asking for such. Grimlock's story is OK, he has a surprisingly articulate inner monologue. Mirage's story is the most unusual, presenting an alternate path for the character. Wheelie's story actually makes the character not annoying. (B+)
Some of these were good and added relevant backstory to the overall universe of this series. Others were wordy and didn't really add anything worth including. Mixed bag. Reading them in very specific order is important or it will mess up the main story line.
another great set of spotlight one-shots. the artwork in "mirage" was probably my favourite. the writing was very strong throughout all issues. The chapter on Arcee was particularly surprising.
