There is a LOT of series fiction in the paranormal romance genre. Unfortunately there is a lot of BAD series fiction and there are some things that I wish authors would take a note on. If you read many reviews at all, one of the things that tends to alienate readers is the cliffhanger ending. I am definitely no exception to that rule. Another issue I have with most series fiction in general is the fact that individual books do not stand on their own and the reader MUST have read all of the previous books in the series before an individual installment makes sense. I have prefaced this review with all of that to say that this book has much of what I've just stated going on with it. When I picked the book up, I had not realized that it was the sixth book in the series. I did, however, feel like I'd been dropped into the middle of the action and was really confused. While it is not a cliffhanger ending, per se, the ending is rather abrupt and I kept trying to go forward on my Kindle app.

Why, if I have THAT much to complain about, did I give it such a high rating? Because I can see the potential in the author's style. The world is well-crafted and the take on vampires and their way of life is interesting. Despite the faults in this book, the author has intrigued me enough that I'm willing to give the world another shot. I am a long-time veteran of other series and even the best writers have an off book.

Because I have not read the other books in the series, I cannot speak to the consistency of the characters. I will say that I hope that Michael is not this much of an ass throughout the series and that Sarah isn't as flighty and indecisive. The character I'm the most interested in learning more about is Alex. He, if nothing else, will get me to read more in the series.

This book has stamina with one quick speed that goes the whole time, beginning to end. The writing style is fast and not the style that I typically enjoy. I have not read the books prior to this one, yet was able to get the gist of what I may have missed. You do not necessarily have to have read the others, but I am sure it would have made things a tad bit clearer. With that said I found it rather baffling to have Sarah fall for Stephen so fast. The book makes it clear that she is a vampire because she wanted to be with Michael forever and always. Not an endearing personality in my opinion. There is a lot of things that happen during this story. I do think that the interest shown between Kate and Alex could make for a next good story line for this author. I know I am interested in how that story could play out if the author makes a few tweaks to the writing style. I was given this story for an honest review and this is mine.

From The Book Junkie Reads . . . The Vampire's Rival (Undead in Brown County, #6) . . .
Cliffhangers. . . I absolutely, positively hate them. This was a read that was part of a serial series. I felt like I was walking on a the middle of something with Michael and Sarah. This was a quickie read. As most serials are but I felt loss going into it and coming out of it I was just plan pissed. I have no real frame of reference for the goings on in Brown County.

This rival vampire brings a touch of intrigue to the situation with Michael and Sarah. He brings stories that appeal and frighten. But at the same time did not hold me captive.

I can see the serious potential for a good paranormal read. The angst was that I felt lost and confused walking in on this one.

The Vampire's Rival

I did not like the way Sara and Michael's relationship went at all. Michael should never of broken her neck. Sara should never kisses Stephen. She needs to talk to Michael and he needs to listen to her. I think there is more to Stephen??? And what about Michael's sisters, did he turn them. Sara needs to become a Guardian....She needs to be a Guardian better than she was just a vampire. She really needs to kick pass.
