Third in the Hawaiian Shadows series by the USA-Today bestselling author of Long Time Coming
Sometimes being together feels electrifying. Sometimes it actually is.
Seventeen-year-old Kali has spent an idyllic few months on Oahu, becoming ever closer to Zane as they enjoy the tropical sun on the beaches of the world-famous North Shore. But as their summer vacations draw to a close, Kali can’t help but feel a twinge of concern. Nothing between the two teenagers has ever been simple, but the deeper in love she falls, the more intense her connection with the shadows -- and other things she’d rather not connect with -- seems to become. And as excited as she is about the prospect of Zane’s returning her love, their bizarre relationship seems to be having “effects” on him as well -- effects that are more than a little disturbing.
A frustrated Kali feels as if she and Zane might be in perfect Lokahi, or harmony, if only they could be “normal.” But is that even an option? When an innocent mix-up at the Honolulu airport results in their crossing paths with fate at its darkest, Kali and Zane must decide whether to play it safe… or embrace the power of the unknown.
No matter the genre, USA-Today bestselling novelist and playwright Edie Claire strives to infuse all her writing with both warmth and humor. Her family-friendly Leigh Koslow cozy mystery series, a favorite of animal lovers that was originally published in 1999, was reborn in 2012 to become a Kindle Top-10 bestseller. Her romantic novels range from women’s fiction with romantic elements to a blend of romance and mystery, beginning with her traditionally published contemporaries, the award-winning Long Time Coming and Meant To Be, and continuing with her USA-Today bestselling Pacific Horizons series, whose characters follow the migration of the humpback whales to some of the most gorgeous locations on earth. In any Edie Claire work, the reader may be assured that while intrigue may beckon and tensions rise, love and happiness will always triumph in the end!
Edie has worked as a veterinarian, a childbirth educator, and a scientific/technical writer. A mother of three, she lives in Pennsylvania and aspires to become a snowbird.
The first book in this series will always be a favorite of mine. When I saw there were sequels... okay, I'll continue.
Book 2 felt a bit forced, but I enjoyed it. Here again, it didn't have the wonder and flow of the first book, but I still liked it. Even while I was a bit critical (seriously, all these different "gifts" ... it started with just Kali seeing the "shadows" and now she's feeling all these emotions, her friend Kylee can see ghosts, Zane can see ghosts and now he's having these visions, seeing through Kali's eyes and now Kali is having drowning visions) ... it was just a bit too much. There is suspension of disbelief and then there's beyond even that.
... and the whole stinky suitcase surrounded by angry and sad ghosts, and then the superstar surfer, again, jumped the shark a little. That being said ... I got a little emotional at one point when everything came to a head.
I'm wondering if the book's intended audience (teen girls) would be less analytical and just enjoy the read more than I did. I'm still rooting for Kali and Zane...
I borrowed this book from the Kindle Lending Library for my August loan.
I just love this series. This book continues on with Kali and Zane learning more about their "gifts" and their bond grows stronger. I can't get enough of them. Zane has developed a new gift, which enables him and Kali to work together to figure things out. Zane surprises Kali by bringing Kylee and Tara from Wyoming to visit her. Kylee and Zane have similar gifts and with the help of Lacey, they are able to save a local beloved surfer superstar. Ms. Claire does not disappoint with the adventures and sometimes chaos that happens. She has a way of making you feel like you are right there with everybody. This is a fun, sweet teen/YA romance with lots of great friends that you can't wait to know what happens next. It is targeted for a young audience, but I believe all ages would enjoy it.
I loved this book. The setting of the book in Hawaii is like a mini vacation without packing a bag.. The characters work together and I was sad that this was the last book in the series until I found out that there is a fourth book, Yea I am about a third through it. I will say the books are about teen agers and have some sweet romance and I liked the way Edie Claire described how they handled problems.
The story was kinda too much, moving too fast with their 'gifts'. Better to explore these gifts one by one, you know? What are you? Super Human Witch? :/
