Megan Green fell in love with Dion Wallace when she was nine years old, but she hasn’t seen him since she was fifteen when he moved from New Zealand to the UK to be with his father. Meeting up with him in Prague eight years later is both a surprise and a relief when he rescues her during one of her panic attacks. On the rebound after a breakup, she turns to Dion for comfort and some hot sex, and he’s happy to oblige. But when the night ends, they’re both certain it’s the last time they’ll ever see each other.
A year later, however, Dion’s life is falling apart. After a decade of hard work, he thought he was next in line to be CEO of the family company, but his father surprises everyone by giving the job to one of his half-brothers. Angry and hurt by his dad’s betrayal, Dion books the first available flight to New Zealand, hoping a few weeks away might give him some perspective. And if he manages to hook up with Megan again while he’s there, he figures that might be the medicine he needs.
Megan’s brother—and Dion’s best mate when they were young—hasn’t told her Dion’s coming. It’s not clear who’s the most shocked when they finally meet. It’s supposed to be a time for miracles, but is Megan’s surprise Christmas present another betrayal Dion cannot forgive?
USA Today bestselling author Serenity Woods writes small-town romances about strong, capable men who work harder and love harder. Most of her stories are set in Aotearoa New Zealand, where she lives.
I wouldn't really call this a book and it's a bit long novella but either way it was very easy to read and very short. Maybe if we saw his dad at least once and not heard about him then it would have been more meaningful. Or more about his work, or her family. It was just weirdly written.
I took me THREE days to read something that is supposed to be short and sweet. It felt long and uh... dredged up feelings of resentment towards the book. Like, why am I torturing myself? Drop the book and forget about it. *Sigh* The problems of one who has this irrational compulsion to finish a book once I've started it. I'm working on that problem. I really am.
This story was difficult to read, not because of the clear language and seemingly well carried out plot (on the surface), but because of the boredome caused by the execution of it all, and then some...
I'm going to list the problems I had with this, in order of how they appeared.
In the first chapter, the author creates intrigue when she reveals to the male protagonist (and the reader) that he's fathered a born child.
Great. I'm hooked. Not a fresh plotline, but many have successfully carried it out. So why did it go oh so wrong in chapter 2?
Well, here's why: the author gave away the entire backstory (or the bare bones of it in chapter 1). We know he's had a very steamy, passionate one night fling with a friend he really cares about from his past, and he's reminiscing about seeing her again. So what does the author do in chapter 2 and onwards for a few chapters? She does an entire flashback scene that lasts a few chapters, basically repeating everything she's revealed in chapter 1.
Look. The intrigue is gone. You've left no room for mystery. We already know they will have a one night stand. We know they care about each other. We know it was very passionate. We know. We know. We know.
So get back to what I don't know: what happens with the baby plotline?
Unfortunately, when we finally get back to the present, the story has lost its momentum and has trouble getting rolling again.
How could have this been fixed?
There are many different ways that I've seen authors go about this. The big idea here is to leave room for mystery to leave the reader guessing. One way could have been to reveal the romantic interlude in the flashback, but not before. Don't show us the baby before the flashback, either. Now we know that they definitely did something. We know that whatever happened ended in the creation of a baby.
See there? No mystery.
But back to the present. The plot seemed to be dying on the baby front. So what does the author introduce? A complication from the male protagonist's life.
This is all well and good, but the author has him have a meltdown with no lead up up to it. It comes out of the blue and it makes him appear immature and, well, unlikeable. Then the author springs a sex scene right after this meltdown. By this point, I'm cringing on the inside. There's nothing less sexy than a man who just acted immature and said horrible things that the female lead forgives with a calm "it's okay."
Look. She can forgive him, but telling him it's okay is just... Here's the spoiler to what he says so that you know exactly how horrible it was:
She's a mother who loves her child deeply. Her reaction and words just don't coincide with that image. At all.
And this is where the story completely lost me.
To be clear, it wasn't what he said that turned me off, it was how it was dealt with. His statement, while horrible, was very honest. It was a gateway for great character development and insight. That was the good part. (However, the author didn't go further with that developement. So, it was a no go.) The bad part was the poor leadup up to the meltdown, and how it was played out (his statement was treated like it didn't happen).
Furthermore, (and this was a big shock to me because I thought I was 50% done, but it turns out that the rest of the pages were an excerpt for another story) I learned that that was the climax. It was the a very poor progression of a relationship from conflict to a state of a happy medium. And, let me point out that the author didn't do much with that conflict coming from the male character's family side. It was resolved (poof!) just like that. We get a short conclusion in the epilogue to "satisfy" the "But what about that..." question side of things. It felt very 'tell-y' rather than 'show-y.'
Very unsatisfying.
In conclusion, this book had not only structural issues but this absence of a natural progression of conflict and how conflict is dealt with (in fiction). The author's skill set at handling this aspect left much to be desired. I just wasn't sold on these characters. I feel the author might do better at short stories.
This book is just so frustrating. There are no real reason for anything. The whole plot is stilted, everything is so abrupt, the characters' decision, their reasoning...
Let me start with the characters. Our heroine thought it was best to not tell her baby's daddy about the news. I mean, sure, he is a workaholic, lives across the sea and doesn't seem to be really interested in her, but... come on!! He accuses her of being selfish and that's what she is! I mean, who knows when she would have told him? And what about the poor babe? Doesn't he deserve to know his dad? Doesn't the dad deserve to know about the baby?? Apparently not... Cause the mother is such a coward; she even admitted that she basically didn't tell him because 'it would have hurt her if he had rejected her'. Boohoo. Well, yeahh. So what? Life sucks. Still, he would have deserved to know.
And our hero? My gosh, the things he says to our heroine are just beyond mean and evil. Sure, they were fighting and having a heated conversation but... come on.
Yeah, I loved the whole breastfeeding theme and the whole Oh-god-it's-a-baby-what-am-I-gonna-doo was cute.
Still, this is just not for me. Plus, it was a novella so... yeah.
His Christmas Present is by Serenity Woods. It is a great book. Dion returns to New Zealand to figure out his next steps. He finds his friend Sean’s sister Megan had a baby while he was gone. The baby was his! After the shock of finding out about a baby he had no idea of, he retraces the steps that led to this point. Now what?
His Christmas Present: A Sexy Second Chance Romance
The Christmas love story of Dion and Megan. After Dion sent away from NZ after he was found kissing Megan by her father they meet in Prague. He on business and she on vacation. They a one night stand. A year later Dion is back in NZ and Megan has a Christmas surprise for him. Will Christmas be great for him? Okay story.
His Christmas Present by Serenity Woods With Remember Me (bonus novella) Christmas Wishes #3
I am guaranteed a good story when I pick up a book by this author…every time…without fail!
HIS CHRISTMAS PRESENT This is a romance but it is also a story of family, friends and big life decisions. Dion left New Zealand eight years before the story starts and has returned to his friend Sean’s house to regroup and contemplate his future. He has devoted himself to his career and thought all was right in the world but had the rug slip out from under his feet…or so it feels. When he arrives he is smacked in the face with a huge surprise that can be considered a gift…if he can wrap his mind around it. This is a second chance romance and one that had the hero really thinking, growing and coming to some big realizations that led to decisions that would impact his life forever…and though there were some rough patches…the ending was JUST what I wanted it to be. I loved Megan’s assurance and maturity and though I might not have agreed with one of her decisions understood why she decided as she did. I thought Dion was a man that lost his way for a bit but was so glad he found it again.
REMEMBER ME An unexpected delight! Well, I did expect and excellent story but this one delivered big time indeed :) Hamish is home from military hospital and a bit in limbo…his body and mind were impacted by an IED and he is regrouping and trying to come to terms with the changes he faces. He has a niggling feeling Rose is important to him but is not sure why. When he arrives at the family beach home with his brother Eamon he relaxes and sees Rose again. The two are given a second chance together and what a sweet story this turned out to be!
Two splendid stories to make your Christmas better – you will feel, care and then want to share these stories with others.
Thank you to the author for the copy to read in exchange for my honest review.
This is a Christmas-themed contemporary romance novella set in New Zealand and Prague. Me In the distant past, Meagan fell in love with her older brother's best mate, Dion. Then on the day after he kisses her for the first time (at age 15), he leaves to live with his father in the UK.
Fast forward, he returns to Northland, New Zealand at Christmas time and discovers she is a mother and that he is the father (Surprise!).
Then the story reverts to the ghost of Christmas past (whoops, this isn't Dickens) when they accidentally meet again in the "most romantic city in the world" Prague.* It seems fated that they have a weekend that includes wild monkey sex. Despite precautions (read: condoms), Meagan ends up pregnant, but doesn't let Dion know about it.
Returning to the present, what will happen to the couple? Will Dion accept Harry? Will Meagan forgive him? Do they love each other enough to make a go of it?
Overall, it is a fairly tame romance without too many graphic scenes, and it is set in New Zealand (a win). There are some WTT trends (Meagan is green-eyed; he is rich and has a chiseled jaw), but very few typos.
* PS. An online unofficial poll with a Facebook group of readers from all over disputed this claim with many places (Venice, Paris, Rome, Florence, etc. and even at least one person indicating a place in New Zealand as being the most romantic place in the world) ranking up there with Prague. Yes Prague was mentioned, but not that often.
Not one of my favorite Serenity Woods books. This was an ok read..pretty short, but not necessarily fast paced.
Maybe it was the moving back and forth between past and present. I found it to be slightly disruptive to the flow of the story.
The book did get better after they were done with Prague. Dion and Megan trying to deal with each other and Dion's present were more interesting.
I have to admit that it took a while for Dion to grow on me. I was glad that Megan was not as fragile as she seemed to be in Prague. I still thought her reasons for keeping the secret was dumb.
Slightly frustrating. Slightly confusing. But, overall OK.
**Update** Included in this book is a novella titled Remember Me. A very quick read that was sweet, romantic, a bit unrealistic, but nice. This book was in keeping with the theme of a second chance.
Hamish and Rose are given a second chance. Hamish went into the situation with no expectations. Rose entered it with completely different expectations then their first encounter. At the very end, they both received a very pleasant surprise.
I liked the second book better even if it was shorter. It also has a section that described Hamish and Rose's first encounter. For some reason, it wasn't as distracting as in the first book, and closed easily in the second book. Hamish and Rose get their well deserved HEA.
Fate brings two childhood friends together for a romantic night resulting in an unexpected pregnancy!
Reunited after eight years two childhood friends spend a night making passionate love only to return to their own lives the next day. Dion has no time in his busy career driven life to have a girlfriend much less one who lives halfway around the world. He had made that clear to his childhood best friend's little sister. Megan was on the rebound from a dispassionate engagement when she was surprised to run in to her childhood crush and spend one night experiencing ardent love making. Megan would love more, but Dion was clear he was not interested in pursuing a relationship while focusing on advancing his career. Therefore, when little Harry came into the world Megan was hesitant to inform Dion of the birth of his child. What happens when Dion decides to spend a holiday with his good buddy Sean (Megan's brother)? That's answered in His Christmas Present which I highly recommend to anyone looking for a good holiday, brother's best friend, unexpected/ secret baby romance. This heartwarming story is told in third person prose flashing back and forth from Christmas Present to Christmas Past and ending with Christmas Future. The characters reside in United Kingdom and Australia so spelling and vocabulary reflect those locations.
I loved loved LOVED the plot of this book: Megan and Dion knew each other as teenagers but grew apart when Dion moved to the UK. Eight years later, they meet by chance in Prague and a romantic night together leads to Megan's pregnancy. One year later, Dion (non the wiser about the pregnancy) visits New Zealand and is surprised to find that he has a son.
Suprise/secret baby is a favourite trope of mine and this was such a satisfying read. Much of this book is a flashback to Prague, and although I enjoyed that part, I felt like the post-baby part of the book was slightly rushed - hence the reason for 4 stars rather than 5. Seeing Dion finally bond with baby Harry was adorable and I just wish we'd gotten a little more of that. This was a lovely Christmas book otherwise though!
This is a sweet story about a young love that got a second chance. Dion was living with his best friends family after.his mum died, he left New Zealand 6 months later to live with his father in England after Megan’s dad caught them kissing. Now 9 yrs later Megan is an up and coming artist and she takes a trip to Prague after catching her fiancé cheating and bumps into Dion. They meet by chance whilst he’s there on a business trip, Megan realises she still loves Dion annd they have a magical evening together resulting in baby Harry Megan hasn’t told Dion about the baby so imagine the shock when he visits Megan’s brother in New Zealand for Christmas. After much heartbreak and loss we do see a HEA. Would have liked it to be a bit longer but I enjoyed the characters and storyline.
I liked this book ok as it revisited the Christmas past where the leads meet and make the baby. But Dion never showed interest in his baby, and that is unacceptable. The title photo is so wrong for this book until the very end.
Dion actually tells Megan he wished he had known when she got pregnant so that he could have talked her into an abortion. That is NOT ok. Megan letting him get away with saying it is not ok. She was a doormat, and he was a jerk in the last part of the book. i just couldn't get past this.
Second Chance Romance. Dion lived in New Zealand from 8-18, so when his career in England comes crashing around his ears, he hops on a flight to visit his best mate, Sean for a couple of weeks. He wouldn’t object to hooking up with Sean’s sister again, though they haven’t seen each other in over 12 months; what he doesn’t expect is the shock Megan gives him when he arrives at Sean’s house. Loved this story, recommended read.
This book was okay but nothing I would recommend to anybody unless they just wanted a light hearted romance book. Even though it was based at Christmas time it was hard to get in that homey place while reading because it was based in a warmer climate in Europe I believe. I can't even remember they talked about so many places. Anyways, the characters were just okay and their story line was good. Could have used more but I know it was just supposed to be a novella.
Megan was going to Prague for the romantic weekend she had scheduled with her ex. Dion was in Prague for business. They had seen each other since he left England when he was 18 and she was 15. Who knew they would meet on a bridge. They end up spending the day and night together before his meeting. Now a year later he's in New Zealand to see his friend Sam, who is also Megan's brother. But does she have a surprise for him.
I truly enjoyed this story! The surprise shenanigans in a romantic, European city during the holidays, the genuine emotions and wary questioning of the connection, and a couple of unanticipated curveballs are perfect for this romance. Megan and Dion are both engaging characters, and their journey to HEA is both organic and magical. And the epilogue is chef's kiss; this story provides all the holiday romance feels in unexpected packaging!
I very sweet story. The main male character was very conflicted and very lost. The main female character was very sweet and very tolerant of the father of her child. I liked that she moved on with her life and didn't wait on him. I am glad he finally realized he had a gem in his childhood friend. Good story.
Dion and Megan’s story was lovely. How they were always attracted to each other but it had never been the right time or place. Then Dion visits her brother over Christmas to see her and a little surprise. One that shocked him in to silence. Their passion for each other is amazing and the sex scenes are hot.
Dion Wallace arrives back in New Zealand to celebrate Christmas with his friend, Sean Green, and is met with a surprise by Sean's sister, Megan. A large part of this story explores the Christmas of the past year in which Dion & Megan basically had a one night stand in Prague. Lots of description, dialogue, and occasional profanity to tell this fairly simple tale.
The idea of this story line is great. The present, what there was of it, was really good. The majority of the story was set in the past though. At 1 point, 10 consecutive chapters were just the past. It would have been better if either there was less of the past or the story was longer to focus just as much on the present.
Good, quick read. A little slower moving than I would have liked. And I’m not usually a fan of books that jump around in time, from present to past to present ... but when all was said and done, it held my attention and I enjoyed it!
I thought this was going to be a cutesy christmas story, but oh no it was so sexy and hot, definitely have a cold drink with this one, will totally melt the ice in your drink, I desperately want to go to Prague and relive their night there, highly recommend.
The choppy nature of the story. Dude is a self indulgent prick. And she lets him be. She feels guilty, yeah right, she's a doormat. She loves the idea of him rather than who he actually is.
