Laura Jackson trusts no man—especially after her father's gambling debts force her into the crosshairs of a ruthless loan shark. But when fearless army-ranger-turned-cowboy Colton Blackwell charges in to save her from the barrel of a gun, the self-reliant nurse must accept his help. Whisking Laura away to his secluded Louisiana ranch doesn't provide the sanctuary Colton planned. But he intends to keep his promise to protect her, despite secrets in his past that could drive her away. Laura may have a bounty on her head, but the only thing at risk under Colton's care will be her heart.
Award winning author Virginia Vaughan lives by the motto ‘It’s not hoarding if its books’. Always the kid with her nose stuck in a book, becoming a multi-published author hasn’t stopped Virginia from continuing to grow her own collection of favorite reads. Her family has refused to help her move anymore because of the sheer number boxes of books, but she’s no quitter. She’ll keep buying books and, the next time she moves, hire a moving van.

Another good suspenseful read in the Rangers Under Fire series. I have enjoyed getting the story for each of the rangers with each book. Virginia Vaughan doesn't disappoint with the non-stop action in each of these suspenseful reads. I especially enjoyed how she addressed the importance of forgiveness in this story (both others and ourselves). For readers looking for good thought provoking suspenseful reads, I recommend this book and the rest of the series.
Ranch Refuge by Virginia Vaughan is a fast paced seat of your pants thrill ride. Laura and Colton learn trust and forgiveness as they work together to survive. The past is never very far behind you, but how you accept and move on determines how your future relationships will flourish. This is a must read book!
I would have rated this book higher, but the hero in this book was the worst bodyguard ever. Even after being repeatedly hurt, the two main characters continued to stay at the same place. It just didn't make sense to me. That said, it was a lively book with likable characters.
It was a fast pace read, but not too fast as to where it was over too quick. Right amount of danger, romance, and with a surprising twist I did not see coming at all.
This is the third book in the Rangers Under Fire Series. I have really enjoyed this series. I do love stories about the Rangers even the ex-rangers. This book is action packed, full of faith, and adventure. I liked that about Virginia. Laura Jackson works as a nurse in the ER. She lives alone and wants to keep it that way. Her father is a gambler, he has destroyed their relationship, and has made a mess of her life. She trusts no man and has made up her mind to keep it that way. She leaves work one night and is met by a man holding a gun on her. She is rescued by a stranger who forces her into his truck. How is she suppose to know who is the bad guy and who is good? How can she trust this stranger? Ex-Army Ranger Colton Blackwell is watching Laura leave work. He met her father at a Gamblers Anonymous meeting and her father told him Laura was in danger; he promised her father to protect her. He sees the attack; steps in, rescues her, and whisks her away to his secluded ranch to keep her safe. They soon find out that there is a bounty on her head. Can he keep her safe without her finding out about his past? A journey of two broken souls. Laura's father had made a mess of her life; while Colton had destroyed his own life. They must learn to forgive, rely on each other, and trust God. God has a plan for these two and when they forgive and trust in Him He turns their lives around. God is like that! He can turn all your past mistakes around and pour out blessings upon you. All you have to do is forgive others, your self, and trust Him. He loves you and wants a relationship with you.
Nonstop action that will leave you on the edge of your seat with just enough twist of romance. That was how I felt reading my very first Virginia Vaughn novel. She has a way with words to keep the reader interested. I really enjoyed this fast paced book and I'm going put her first two books on my too read list. Colton Blackwell comes to rescue Laura Jackson after she ends her shift as a nurse at the local hospital. He has been sent by her father who has a gambling debt to a loan shark. Colton was hired to keep her safe. Being that Colton is a retired army ranger he's got the skills to deter the bad guys. He takes her back to his ranch which is a secluded area that should keep her safe. I really enjoyed the chemistry that developed between Laura and Colton. They've both been through a lot. They've both faced loss in their lives. They both must chose forgiveness in order to trust one another. Laura has trouble with trusting men and she's afraid of getting close to him because she doesn't want to get hurt. I received this book from the author in return for posting an honest review. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.
Non stop action fills the pages of this book. Its the third in the series and the second I have read by this author.
I loved the main characters in this book. Laura an ER nurse is burdened by her fathers bad decisions to gamble away everything he owns and she is suffering the consequences of his actions. She finds herself being stalked by the casino owner who has informed her that she must marry him to settle her fathers gambling debt.
Colton Blackwell is a former Army ranger. He is dealing with his army past and also has deep dark secrets. He has promised Laura's father that he will protect her from Chuck Randall the casino owner.
Time after time in the book danger ensues and Colton must rescue and protect Laura from near disaster. They take refuge at Colton's ranch in Compton, Louisiana.
The book has a strong faith message about forgiveness. My favorite part of the book was when Laura and Colton sat down once and had a true heart to heart discussion.
Many twists and turns take place in the book and readers will wonder just who is trustworthy.
This is a great page turner for those who love romantic suspense.
Forgiveness is something we can all relate to and this book certainly deals with it! Laura is an ER nurse whose father's gambling habit and debts have robbed her not only of money but peace of mind and has now put her life in danger because of it. A dangerous loan shark is now chasing Laura because of her father's debt. Can she ever forgive her father for that? Colton, former Army Ranger turned rancher has vowed to protect Laura but has secrets of his own past. Can he ever forgive himself for the things he has done? He also deals with survivor's guilt because he was left alive after his former unit had been ambushed when their plans were leaked to the enemy by someone they relied on. Is there any forgiveness for someone who caused the deaths of many? When a good friend betrays them and almost gets Laura killed in the process, how can anyone be expected to forgive that? This is a book about rebuilding trust. Trusting God as well as those who hurt us. Amazing story!
A book filled with lots of mystery with a backstory of friendship and forgiveness playing a big part in the plot.
ER nurse Laura Jackson is simply minding her own business when danger strikes and she’s in need of help!
Former Army ranger Colton Blackwell steps up to get Laura out of a dangerous plot, and whisks her away to his secluded ranch to keep her safe from the darkness lurking around her. She’s not too willing to trust any man after the past she’s had with her father and the recent sticky situation he has gotten her into with his gambling debts to a dangerous loan shark, but she doesn’t have much in the way of options right now.
Colton soon has her trust as he keeps her safe again and again when something else is thrown at them, but when secrets from his past come out, will she be able to see him as the man he is now and not who he used to be?
If you're hiding, why are you everywhere except hiding
The heroine's father has a gambling problem, he owes the loan shark, he cannot pay so the loan shark sent men to kidnap the heroine. The hero has met the father at a meeting and the father poured his heart out to him asking him to protect his daughter. I would rate this a 3.5 the heroine was supposed to be hiding but she was out shopping, helping on the ranch would have rated this higher . The one person she could trust she ran away from.
I absolutely love Virginia Vaughn and her work! She did not let me down in her 3rd book in her "Rangers Under Fire" series. I was captivated from start to finish in Ranch Refuge. I could not put this book down! In a lot of books I can figure out "who done it" pretty quickly, well let me tell you I was shocked and in suspense the whole book! Absolutely wonderful book in an equally awesome series.
" The characters skillfully depict the importance of forgiveness, as not forgiving can lead to bitterness and anger. The interplay of characters sets up a number of intriguing scenes" (4 stars @ RT Book Reviews).
I really enjoyed this book! A great story about forgiveness. And a plot twist I didn't see coming.
There were moments that I wanted to jump into the book and shake the Heroine/Hero for doing something stupid. But that's the best kind of author, one that makes you care about their characters and their actions/reactions.
I will definitely recommend this to friends and family!
I loved Colton's loyalty towards Laura it's very refreshing to read about in a story. I wish the other rangers were involved in this story as much as Blake and I do hope Blake finds his own HEA. He deserves it after the deceit from Miranda.
Laura,a nurse, is caught between a rock and a hard place as a result of her father's gambling. Her father owes over fifty thousand dollars to a loan shark named Randall and he has no way of repaying Randall so Randall targets Laura. He wants Laura to marry him in exchange for the money her father owes him. Laura hates Randall and wants nothing to do with him and one night Randall sends his men to kidnap her.
In steps Colton who rescues her and takes her to his ranch in Compton, Louisiana in order to protect her. Colton met her father at a gambling anonymous meeting and her father asks him to protect her. He was a ranger before and he agreed to protect Laura out of his own free will. In the days that follow on the ranch they started developing feelings for each but Colton is hiding secrets from his past that could destroy Laura's feelings for him. Also Randall is slowly but surely closing in on them on the ranch. With danger all around and Laura's life in danger will they make it out alive?
I love the twist at the end because I just didn't realize it was Miranda that would have betrayed them. I would definitely read the other books with the other rangers.
