Marcus Richmond might be the quiet one in the Winchester witches’ world, but that doesn’t mean he has nothing to say.
Between renovations at his stable – and plans for a bright future with a certain feisty witch – Marcus has his hands full. Things get even more hectic when local FBI Agent Landon Michaels discovers blood in Marcus’ loft and a series of strange occurrences and thefts plague Hemlock Cove.
It’s a holiday weekend and the weather – and tempers – are running hot as tourists descend on the popular vacation haven to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday. All Marcus has to do to be a part of it is figure out what’s going on… oh, and keep Aunt Tillie out of trouble when she decides someone is stealing from her special field.
Marcus knows what he wants and he’s determined to get it. He just needs to solve a mystery and make sure Aunt Tillie doesn’t take matters into her own hands when no one is looking.
This is a short story set in the Wicked Witches of the Midwest world. It is set between Charms & Witchdemeanors and The Trouble With Witches.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
The more books in this series I read, the better I like them. As with all of the books, Aunt Tillie is my favorite character...she is a hoot and a half. In this short story, she was in rare form even for Aunt Tillie. I liked this book because it was told from Marcus' point of view. Chief Terry didn't make an entrance until the last chapter but since it was a short story, that was okay. Had it been a longer full length novel/story, his absence would have been noticed. I still want him to marry Twila though.
If you liked the other books in this series, I'm sure you love this one.
Witchdependence Day: Wicked Witches of the Midwest Short Best read in chronological order.
In A Nutshell: An enjoyable story set on 4 July and tied to community spirit and love. It is bound up in life-saving magic delivered by witches.
The Wicked Witches shorts are an opportunity to see the Winchester family from different perspectives. It's Marcus's turn, Thistle's beau. We get a chance to understand why this mild mannered man is hung up on Thistle and why he loves Aunt Tillie.
As usual, it is Aunt Tillie, who saves the day. I only read the series for the mean ole witch. Her family never seem to have a handle on Aunt Tillie. They remained puzzled by her behaviour, her humane side.
I particularly enjoy this short. It has me smirking instead of rolling my eyes at the preposterous behavour of the Winchester witches. Witchdependence Day joins Thistle While You Work (review here) as my favourite short. And there is only two. So far.

My rating system (* = star) 0* Could not finish this book (waste of time) 1* Finished the book but didn't like it. 2* Finished the book it was okay. 3* A good read worth your time. 4* An excellent read often with a novel concept or unusual plot. 5* a great read. A prominent example of the genre.
This was told from Marcus’s first person POV. The ending pages touched my heart. Aunt Tillie’s actions touched my heart… I KNOW! Crazy, right? Lol. She’s not always all evil.
Marcus is so chill and such a sweetheart. He is perfect for Thistle and has the ability to remain calm while around the wild Winchesters. He has a good heart and cares deeply for the prickly Thistle.
Very good.
Next is book 9 Happy Witchgiving. I’m sure Chief Terry has a book from his POV coming up in this series. We’ve already heard from Landon, Thistle, Clove, Winnie, Aunt Tillie, Marnie, Sam, and of course Marcus. This is a 15 book series and we have 7 books left. So, that’s 7 more people. Let’s see, we’ve got Twila, Chief Terry, who else? Oh! I know, maybe we’ll hear from Margaret Little. Ugh. Lol. Um, Belinda, Annie… maybe Viola from the Whistler newspaper. That’d be cool because she’s a ghost! Possibly Bay, although every story has been from her POV in the other 2 series that go with this one…
Boom, there’s 15 people total. I’m probably wrong on a few of those. Guess I’ll find out soon!
This particular story was one of the more touching ones that Amanda has written. I think it’s because she focused on Marcus and he has such a loving soul. It brought out the warm loving hearts of all the characters. He is truly a respectful person and a quality individual. It warmed my heart. It even softened Aunt Tilly. I love how they all came together to help the man that was in trouble who had a very serious disease which has touched my family. If you don’t know what this disease is after you read the book, please investigate it. It is nothing to take lightly. I really do enjoy Amanda‘s writing style and character development as I’ve gone through the books. I always look forward to reading the next one. I’m especially looking forward to the next book in the series of the Wicked Witches of the Midwest. Keep it up Amanda you’re doing great!
I have been reading Amanda Lee books for years! I have yet to be disappointed. I love how she can make each character in her books feel like real people. The three younger witches (Bay, Thistle, and Clove) have such a great sense of loyalty. Even when they are bickering you can feel how much they love each other. Amanda does a great job giving voice to even the boy friends of the characters by giving them their own short stories such as the book Witchdependence Day that I just finished reading. Marcus gets a chance to tell his story. It’s great to get the point of view of the relationships from his perspective. Please keep writing!
Marcus is the quietest character in the books about the Winchester witches. It's often easy to overlook him among such a loud and vocal group, so this short story allowing us a peek into how his mind works and what he really thinks of everybody is fascinating. Along with a little mystery, where did the blood in the stables come from and who is stealing food around town but most importantly who's trying to find Aunt Tillie's oregano patch. This is a great short story, just long enough to tell a very witty tale and full of humour.
This one's told from the viewpoint of Marcus, Thistle's lover. They've been working on modifying a barn to become their future home but Marcus feels that someone is watching them. This isn't helped by the finding of human blood in the barn. Landon has checked on that and is not trying to help them figure out just what is going on.
Then a pie gets stolen from a festival and bread gets stolen. Marcus finds out who is behind all of this with the question being what can he do? Is this something for the police or something that calls for a lot of help? It's a good story.
I really enjoyed the story from Marcus' point of view and not having to deal with the cousins getting themselves into trouble all of the time, I think when the author writes from the male perspective the story reads better.
It was a nice short and deviation from the normal pattern of the stories, however there was proofreading errors so I can't rate this a 5 - I feel like I say this too much but proofreading errors really take away from the story.
Anyway, I recommend this story if you are a fan of the series.
This short story is told by Marcus . It's the Fourth of July and there is a festival going on . But Marcus discovers blood in the stable loft and the adventure goes from there . There are no murders in this story just the usual hijinks of the Winchester women and their men .
I enjoy these short stories that fit into the actual Wicked Witches series. It gives a different perspective into the lives of Bay & her family. Aunt Tillie's attitude, the sarcasm, witt & interactions between everyone are what I love about these books. They are all a lot of fun to read and I find the whole series is 'un-put-down-able'...
Marcus has a stable full of horses, and some blood at the top of the stable loft. It's the fourth of July weekend and there is a festival in town. We see things from Marcus point of view, and gain insight on his love of Thistle, Great Aunt Tillie and all the Winchester witches.
This story is told from Marcus' perspective. It was nice to see how he sees things, especially Thistle. Plus, his role seems so limited in the other stories. I really enjoyed this book, and I look forward to reading more of them. This book is definitely worth reading.
A good supplemental book to the wicked witches series with a backstory. Mystery, magic, romance and humor abound. I wish the author would create a timeline to show the order the books fall so they can be read in a type of order. Mixing four or five series with backstories is a bit confusing, but I am enjoying the books.
I love this series it makes me laugh! The wit,sly remarks the silly arguing. I hope soon the older women find men after all Aunt Tilley has a boyfriend. Thank you for making me laugh when things at work are so hard I cannot wait to come home to read this series.
Marcus gives us his point of view. The story is sentimental. The Fourth of July finds the Winchesters helping a veteran who has nowhere to go. Love and witchcraft win out all the time.
I loved, loved, loved this short. Marcus is a very quiet, but strong character. Thistle and Marcus are perfect together ❤!! The whole story just tugged at my heart. Respect was given where respect was due.
Loved it. Glad the mystery wasn’t a murder. It made for a good change of pace. I would have liked to get a little more out of Marcus, so hopefully he will get another story sometime.
Love these W.W. of the M.W. The family is so dysfunctional & Solidarity in their loyalty to each other. Helping a man who thinks he’s not worth saving offering him a place among them. The best cozy series!
I've really been enjoying these books. They are easy reads, light and fun.all things we need these days. The typos drive me crazy though and I know I can report them but I don't know if anyone does anything with it.
Love reading about the Shenanigan that Aunt Tillie, and the stories involving Bay & Landon, Thistle & Marcus, and Clove & Sam and how they all make me laugh and cry through the books. Don't care how the narrator keeps changing.
Another filly enjoyable short story from the wicked witches of the Midwest series. This is written from Marcus perspective it was nice seeing how his and thistles relationship is without the prying eyes of the rest of the family
This series is so fun, I keep coming back for more and more. The hi jinx in here is supreme! The stories make you think a different way than you can imagine. I only wish I could be nearly as good at weaving a tale of this type of proposition!
This short story is told by Marcus and really shows the type of man he is....quiet, good natured, patient, and ready to help anyone in need. It's the 4th of July and most of the Winchesters are out and about. Highly recommend.
This story is from Marcus' perspective, so we get to see how Whistle is with him when they're alone. It also explains how he got his first employee. There's a small mystery they have to solve to find him.
A little bit of an abrupt ending, but still a neat entry in the series. I like how well this author can write from the point of view of other characters.
