Although I think this story could have been better written, the illustrations are phenomenal. The story hints at much more that seems to be adult, a little like Chris Van Alsburg and Sendak, but the two children I read this two were transfixed. The older child saw deeper meaning than the younger, but the younger went back to the images to give the characters names.
Very nice. Harmless phantasmagoria, in miniature. Illustrations to grab you like those of Chris Van Allsburg or Brian Selznick. The story needed another complication or two, or maybe another 10 pages.
The illustrations are intriguing, perspectives are well-executed. The writing, character development, and story itself didn't reach the same level as the art.
This book is beautiful. I found the end of the story somewhat anticlimactic. However, the pictures are lovely. I almost wanted to read it again just for the pictures. So beautiful!
