****************** Every day across America and the world, parents hear the words "Your child has eight cavities." Almost every time, the parents are completely surprised. Many times, neither the parents nor the dentists know why. The parents are confused because their child had a healthy diet and avoided sugar. Learn how to not get surprised by these cavities like over 70% of 7 years olds in America have. You read that correctly! Over 70% of children have a cavity by age seven, and nobody expects it to be their kid! If your child already had cavities, learn how to not keep getting them again accidentally in the adult teeth. You will learn the science of cavities and learn the emotional tips to help your child without having to pull your hair out.
If you child is one years old, keep them cavity free for the next ten years. If your child is ten, keep them cavity free for the next ten years. Read this book for your own teeth.
In terms that any parent can understand, I will explain why you can spend less time brushing your kid's teeth if you focus on the foods you give them. No gross tasting cod liver oil. You don't have to milk a cow yourself. Just sane, practical advice that I have already helped thousands of families with. You will learn why I have one of the busiest pediatric dental practices in the Seattle area. Proactive parents love my advice!
Most of this they don't teach in dental school, but they should. Even the parts that your dentist already knows and cares deeply about, there is never enough time to discuss all of the "accidental" ways to to slowly get cavities over the years, or the reasoning behind it. Even I can't do it in my practice! My dental friends who have read this tell me "I am so glad you have written this down for parents.
Our own dentist had told us to stay away from sticky foods like crackers, but never went into the science behind the true "why" of it all. This book was fact based without going over my head( being overly technical) and it was a quick read. Even though I found this book through the Dentist Dad Facebook page(so I knew HE was a parent) it's obviously written by a parent and he keeps that in mind as his main target audience. He realizes the uniqueness in caring for young ones teeth and how there isn't one method that is a cure all for everyone. I found myself questioning techniques laid out in the book and Dentist Dad quickly offered up alternatives in his next paragraph. There are links in the kindle version to lists of suggestive snacks that can minimize the cavity risk as well as links to help brush less-than-willing young one's teeth. I found that very helpful. I also liked how the book lessened my guilt of being lacks on brushing as our family has grown. It's truly the food they are eating that mattered more! The Dentist Dad mentions how with each subsequent child, the dental caries seem to increase due to the fact the snacking on sticky food increases. I don't know how many times I have sat child #2, 3 and now 4 with some kind of cracker or sticky snack so I could get other things done. And you know what? Child #1 has no cavities in her 10years and children 2 and 3 have 5 cavities so far between them and they are 6 and 4 years old.( That includes one capped molar) My 4th child is not yet one year, but we are going to be swapping out sticky foods before they have a chance to get used to (read:addicted) to sticky snacks. It's helpful that this books drives home the fact that sticky doesn't always mean candy, which I think most parents think of when their dentist tells them no sticky foods. I think this book is a must read for all parents and should be discussed more with pediatric dentists as a teaching tool for their patients.
