Walk with a man who's been through hell and stumbled back into the world with a passenger laying across his shoulders. Let him remember what it was like, what the world once was, before his injuries became so great that his mind lay in tatters behind a broken face. Travel with him as he speaks to the voices of long dead friends and to the one who chose to tour hell with him. Find Richie as he walks back through a time before the events of The Dark Roads.
Remember when you were a kid and told everyone that you wanted to be an astronaut-cowboy-billionaire? I didn't really do any of that, but the principle still remains the same. I'm an electrician/mechanic by day, a writer/editor/proofreader/drunkard by night, and a scuba diver on the weekends. I was born in Kentucky and somehow found myself on Clearwater Beach living in a houseboat with a group of eclectic neighbors that are sure to grace the pages of one of my books in the near future. What a terribly boring life I lead, right?
I've been writing since I pumped out my first short story at the glorious age of nine. For some reason the story was absolutely violent beyond belief and I'm thankful that I've been able to tone down the language since then. I was a vulgar little kid.
I'm continuing the dream of that nine-year-old by writing full-length novels that will take you to emotional places that you may or may not want to go, but the journey will leave you fulfilled and unsettled. Two feelings that I love to invoke.
I enjoyed the first book in this series so I was excited to be able to travel the road with the characters once again. Though short, Wayne is able to tell a great story that kept me entertained throughout. I'm eagerly awaiting book three as I'd really like to see the Dark Roads Universe expanded on.
This is a prequel/sequel toThe Dark Roads Richie is wandering the roads, in a brain addled state, after escaping some serious horrors. He is desperately trying to cling to his sanity and does so by telling Amanda a story about him and his friends. We're given a glimpse into the past of these four brave young men; learning how they came to be on the road to Alaska. Benny is finally given a proper introduction, and we can see first hand why he was incapable of persevering like his friends.
The prose is solid, and the author somehow manages to tell a great story in spite of the main characters mental issues. We float around within Richies timeline learning some important facts. It was nice revisiting these boys and learning more about how the world became a devastating wasteland. I'm looking forward to more, especially how Elvis learned to play the guitar. We were teased with it, but the author insists on leaving us wanting more. He also gives us a teaser of the next book, Not This Thursday, and I'm ready for more! This one is unlike his previous books. It looks funny and it'll be fun trying to figure out the protagonists personal mystery.
Although considerably shorter than The Dark Roads, I felt that Walking Back enhanced the story followed in the previous book. Walking Back gives the reader an insight into Buddy, Benny, Elvis and Richie's relationship prior to the events of the first book. Maintaining Wayne's unique and gripping writing style it takes the reader on a journey through the early struggles the four friends endure, allowing the reader the chance to see how the friends learnt to live in this horrible, broken world. It also takes away Richie's only tie to sanity and explores his descent into madness, allowing Wayne the chance to further explore the characters lost in the first installment. Overall a fantastic addition to a world that I would like to see further explored.
This story is a great filler for those of us awaiting a sequel to the brilliant dark roads book 1, it didn't answer all the questions I wanted to know but has kept my interest in what happened once the group got to their destination. Looking forward to book 3.
I can't get enough of Richie and his companions after reading The Dark Roads. I liked the back story and the twist was unexpected. I look forward to reading more! I really enjoy the author's ability to transport you into the story.
A interesting tale of what happened after 'The Dark Roads' but also what happened before. We follow Richie as he carries an unconscious Amanda away from danger. He is talking to Elvis, Buddy and Benny while trying to keep his sanity. Despite being shorter than 'The Dark Roads' it stills feels well fleshed out and answers most of my questions from the previous book. Hopefully book three isn't too far away.
This follow-up to The Dark Roads is what I believe to be a soon to come stunning conclusion to the trilogy. Like all of Mr. Lemmon's works, the story is told simply and with just enough information to make it another page Turner. The surprise ending makes me want to know " So... what happens next?"
