Nine years ago, federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.

Now in MOON DRAGON, private investigator Samantha Moon investigates allegations by her dead ex-husband’s mistress that a killer is on the loose...a killer who just might be immortal. And when another woman vanishes, the clock starts ticking...

As Sam digs deeper into the case, a very dangerous supernatural creature makes his presence known. A creature with a pedigree of evil. A creature who knows her all too well. A creature who just might be history’s greatest mass murderer.

Most of all, she needs to find the missing woman before it’s too late—after all, Sam knows the intended time of the murder, but not the place. Now in a race against time, Samantha Moon is about to discover the lengths one sadistic pack of immortals will go to feed their bloodlust...

"Moon Dragon” is the 10th full-length novel in the Vampire For Hire series, and it continues the by now well-established story very well.

The detective story ties in nicely with Samantha being a vampire, and the battle against werewolves was fun. The new direction for daughter Tammi was probably predictable, but it’s annoying.

Not much else to say for such a familiar series….the book was enjoyable: 4*, and the narrator continues to shine.

I was gifted with an ARC copy of this book.

I wanted to love this book. Truly. I love the potential for the next book, I love the concept, I love the characters.

But the book itself was a jumbled mess. I felt like JR took a bunch of ideas on note cards, shuffled them together, and decided this was the order for his book.

For the length of the book, I would have preferred more development of the main paranormal plot, and less "fillers" with random linking back to family/personal matters. The scenes with her kids felt forced, and as if the author was trying to make it an after-school special wrapped into a paranormal mystery. There is a whole chapter talking about Vampire Diaries- I think perhaps watching the show took over the plot idea for this series and ruined this book. I don't think this book balanced out Samantha Moon the mother with Samantha Moon the paranormal badass.

Also, the ending seemed rather abrupt, I wanted a big scene, and it was pretty lackluster for me.

3/5 stars. Good concept, poor execution.

Loved it! Samantha Moon at her best. I love the evolving relationships in her life and how she is growing as a mom and a vampire. Love the personalities of all the characters and am especially intrigued by Vlad Tepes, aka Dracula. Can't wait for more. Thank you for sharing your talent, Mr. Rain, bravo.

Is there a way for our heroine to win???

This book introduces some new twists. We meet an old vampire or two and get tips on how Sam might be able to win her struggle with the "Dark Master" residing inside her.

Now on to book 11.

Not my favorite in the series.

This book was a drag and the last chapter was the only interesting thing that happened in this book. Hopefully the next one is entertaining.

Ahh, finally. It took me just over two months to finish this book. I have been a long-time fan of the series but this has to be my least favorite of them all. I don't know why but for the bulk of the bok, I just couldn't get into it. I kept putting it aside in favor of other reads. Finally about 68% into it, I got interested and quickly finished it. The last quarter is basically the only part I enjoyed. I found Sam very unlikable in the first part and frankly she agreed with me. Once she got help from a friend and got back on her way to being her old self, I got hooked. I do hope that I don't have this issue when the next book comes out.

Sam Moon has alot to deal with. Men and more men or things keep coming for her. She now meet the first vampire in the world. And from what it looks like, him and Sam are link. At least Fang comes to her one of her because she needed help. She also see your Wolfie in a different light but she must do this to get much needed information to help save the girl. What is next for Sam?

It is becoming more and more difficult to write a review on these books without adding spoilers, because so much of what I want to write is about specific things that happened or were said! On the mechanical side, there are still too many word omissions, and continuity issues, but they do seem to be on the wane. As far as story is concerned, I tend to enjoy the cases Samantha works, even if I think she doesn’t always act when she should, or use her powers when she might. She eventually solves the mystery or rescues an innocent party, but sometimes it feels as though she could have done it faster if she didn’t spend quite so much time obsessing over her own situation. I realize the author has to explain Samantha’s circumstances with each new volume for people who may have started the series somewhere in the middle instead of in Book One, but it does become a bit tedious at times.

I also feel that sometimes situations are brought up, and then dropped without further examination, situations that normally will have a domino effect based on past experiences in these books. One example is Samantha’s decision to stop drinking from a willing donor. It has been established in several books that the arrangement is beneficial to the donor as well as Samantha, and that a deep friendship has developed between the two. But there is no further mention of the arrangement beyond Sam’s decision to end it, no conversation between the two, even after a frightening and awkward evening between them that occurred prior to Samantha’s decision! I found this very unrealistic based on every female friendship I’ve ever had or witnessed. Women generally do not like to let uncomfortable situations fester between themselves and the people they’re closest to, and in this case where there’s not just a typical friendship, but a symbiotic relationship, and a telepathic one as well, it makes no sense to omit a scene of intense discussion, perhaps even a loud argument between the two before finally coming to some sort of agreement, or even ending the relationship entirely! It felt like a glaring omission that could have easily been resolved with another page or two.

I’ve also been upset by a few instances of neglectful parenting on Samantha’s part. I’ve especially been annoyed by her naive assumptions that because of her 10 year old son’s growing supernaturally endowed strength, and her 13 year old daughter’s own gift of telepathy, that they are strong enough, wise enough, and old enough to not only be left alone overnight, but to get themselves up and ready, and waiting for their neighbor’s ride to school!! Vampires and werewolves I can believe, but this stretches beyond my abilities!! Samantha seems to give no thought to whether her children’s emotional and social maturity is keeping in step with their bodies and minds! At least the author included a couple of instances where their lack of comprehension and obedience, and their still understandably juvenile responses to temptation caused problems for themselves and others. But Samantha’s responses to these instances did not seem to me to be appropriate or effective. She completely negated her son’s personal responsibility in one scene, and used tickling(?!) as a technique to deal with her daughter’s underage drinking, which later culminated in another drinking episode in which her daughter was picked up by the police! Samantha needs to find a supernatural therapist for her children ASAP!! I probably shouldn’t say this, but if I were Sam, with the gift of mentally compelling behavior in others, I would be compelling those children left, right, and center, if for no other reason than to avoid the tragedy in the making that their behaviors seem destined to create! I’m a firm believer in free will, but if Samantha really worries for her children’s safety, she’s doing a terrible job of educating, informing, and preparing them for life. If she can’t take the time to give them the skill sets required, then at least she should use what she has to keep them from hurting themselves and others!! But it’s a book, and I suddenly feel silly. It’s probably a matter of envy on my part. There are a few life moments where mental compelling might have made all the difference, but not being vampires, my husband and I muddled through as best we could. Yep, it’s envy. Sigh. Read the books. They’re fun if you don’t take them too seriously!!

I read this entire 15-book (so far) series back-to-back for the last couple weeks, plus quite a few short stories that relate. Free on Kindle Unlimited. It's a great series for a fan of paranormal mystery. The set up is that a mom in California was changed into a vampire in an attack. Fast forward several years and she's struggling with a failing marriage and raising 2 kids with her day time disability. As the years progress, her marriage fails, her kids mature, and her relationships with love interests/ friends/family grow. The characters are relate-able, there's a little humor, and very entertaining mysteries with interesting treatments of magic. Solidly fun reading!

This one started out really weird, the woman that helped break up Sam's wedding is knocking on her door for help. She thinks the man she is sleeping with is killing people and he thinks he's a werewolf.
Seems he talks in his sleep. As all of Sam's jobs it involves so many in the para normal community.I just can't say enough how much I like this series, they are fun in a kinda black humor sorta way and they can touch your heart and make you sad. She struggles in this one with some purely evil trying to take her over. Absolutely awesome series.

I like these books. I do. They are quick reads with pretty cool characters and adventures. But holy hell, it bugs the crap outta me that the author doesn't seem to care if he totally contradicts himself. For instance, in this one Sam says her stomach doesn't rumble when hungry. But in another book her stomach rumbled so loud, someone heard it. That's just one example I can think of, but there are many. There's also typos in almost every book. Smh. It's very distracting and definitely interferes with the experience as a whole.

Bomb diggity

Was another good one! Crazy one. She is having problems with her kids tho and omg Dracula has showed is face and that not good! Because you remember who's inside of Sam?! Yup Elizabeth who was Dracula other half. Sam almost lost it there with the witch coming to the surface but she's gotta love herself more to fight her biggest fight of all! I believe in her and don't know what's gonna happen now ugh

Editing is important

I really like this series! So I was a little disappointed in the typos. And you’re missing some details like Fang’s alias. It’s not Aaron. It’s Eli. His real name is Aaron. His alias is Eli. And some discrepancies in vampiric conditions - sometimes Samantha has conditions and then in the next book she doesn’t. Consistency is important to your readers and so the story stays true.

I love these new books Its a story

I know some people.like very steamy sex books and for me its okay but after you read so many that it just not for me. Its been hard to find books that have a story and this series is that Samantha is a vampire and thanks to an alchemist is able to be in the sun and also eat food. But she is also a private detective and each book has a new case but also you do need to start from the beginning to the first book. Its a goood series.

Oh Samantha Moon...what will you do with your newest "friend"?

We continue on with our divorced mom of two who is enjoying life a bit more now that she has two new rings. Her two kids are, of course, being kids. I am enjoying this series so much and am very glad I found it with 30 books published. Because if I had to wait...I might cry.

Remember to read in order as these are not stand alones.

Vlad??

So, we got Vlad now. The big one said he is in love with Sam. Fang is also trying to stage a come back, and Kingsley is still very much around. Our h is a very busy woman. Couple that with her investigation practices, there is no dull moment. Moving on.....

Moon

I really enjoyed it. Samantha now knows why her entity is getting stronger and with the help of Fang realizes what she needs to do to get stronger. Of course she also meets the really bad guy but maybe not so bad. The jury is still out on that. It was a very interesting book.

An ongoing adventure!

I started this series years ago...and lost track of it. Finding Samantha Moon again has been nothing short of awesome. Her story is engaging, full of adventure, mystery and a splash of real life with a heavy dose of the paranormal. Reading these stories make me happy!

Wow!

How about this, we now have another creature in Sam's life. He is a vampire who can change into a dragon plus he is the oldest vamp around. None other than Dracula. And, he has a vested interest in Sam so at least she is safe from him for now. Can't wait the next book!

Just kinda ok...

Introduced new character that was previously talked about. Big fight at end I found disappointing and there was no conclusion with her client either. Not my favorite Sam moon book.

Questions answered

This book revealed more about the dark entity within the heroine. It ended with an action packed battle and some hope for her inner battle.

But her kids are growing up and having their own problems. Read it quickly as it kept my interest.

Horrible times

The series covers quite a few books and draws on characters like knighthorse or spinoza at times. Moon takes on werewolves and teen drinking. Guess what count makes an appearance.
