Enforcers and Coterie #4

Chained in Desire

Rate this book
Fourth in the Enforcers and Coterie series, Chained in Desire delves deeper into a world where magic co-exists peacefully with the ordinary, for the most part...

As a Mage Demon Enforcer, Victor Tremaine is one of the elite classes. Only a handful of mages have earned this distinction since demons are tricky buggers, especially those who have entered Earth illegally. Six months ago, he received an assignment — find and capture something that shouldn't even exist: a human turned demon.

Imagine his surprise when she appears one day and attacks him.

Isabella Tuarez has been tuned into the emotions of others all her life. She's only ever wanted to help, but that driving desire may prove to be her undoing. Escape from her captors should’ve been a happy time. Instead she found herself held by someone more ruthless. To survive, she must prove her usefulness.

She must kill an Enforcer.

Actual rating: 4.5 stars. Please kill me somebody.

I was going to write a never-ending, slightly fangirling review for this Uncharacteristically Uncrappy Piece of Freaky PNR Novel (UUPofFPN™), but then I realized that given that I was me, and that this was PNR, and that my little self usually hates Freaky PNR Novels with a vengeance, and that I rated this one 4.5 stars and that I have completely forgotten what I was going to say, bloody hell that'll teach me to write such long sentences. Okay, forget it. Whatever I was going to say was probably one of the brightest, most interesting things ever, but it's early, I haven't had my mandatory 3 liters of coffee yet, so there's no chance I'm going to remember what it was, and it looks like this is going to be a never-ending sentence again, so I better cut the crap before I forget what I was going to say again, which I have anyway. Damn, crap, bloody hell and stuff.

Soooooooo, why should you read this UUPofFPN™, you ask? Because…

I said so. Not convinced? Huh. You're a tough bunch of Little Barnacles to please, you know that?

Demons are yummy. Well sometimes demons are plain crappy, and sometimes some demons even bring shame and disgrace to their kind. But demons are mostly yummy indeed. Why? Because I said so. Obviously. And because E=mc2.

Victor is a delightfully aggravating smartass. The guy lives to irritate. And exasperate. And generally annoy the hell out of everyone. It's a dream come true. Chains look pretty hot on him too, which doesn't hurt. Now. We seem have a slight custody problem over Aggravating Victor here. Veronica (the silly girl who wrote this book), seems to think he is hers. Sigh. He is of course, MINE, but she won't get it through her little head. I have tried explaining to her at length that she created his character, and is therefore his MOTHER, and that it would therefore be EW EW EW YUCK YUCK YUCK WRONG for her to have him (because incest isn't so hot, you know), but she just won't listen!! I'm not giving up though. You know how defensive I get when it comes to my harem boys. I never let them go. NEVER. Dog with a bone and all that crap.

Isabella could have been a total bore, in a deadly "I'm a niiiiiiiiiiiiice girl and liiiiiiiiiiiiive to help others" dreadful, please kill me now way. But thank the heavens, praise the Lord, etc, a bunch of creeps kidnapped her and played evil scientists with her, so all is uber cool. Well she's slightly bipolar now, and kind of struggles with her inner demons (hahaha, I'm so funny), but at least she's no allergy-inducing wimp who thrives to save others from their boring misery *shudders* So yeah, Isabella is pretty awesome. And she isn't afraid to go on rampages. And to accessorize her wardrobe with a little blood (not hers, obviously). Now that's my kind of girl. Hot hot hot!

As you might have guessed from ↑↑, this book offers a delightful array of gory fights and glorious dismemberments {insert happy, blissful sigh here}. Such beauty. Such delectation. Such joy {insert another bunch of happy, blissful sighs here}.

There is actually an interesting plot here. I kid you not. PNR with an intriguing plot that keeps you engaged to the very last page. Please refrain from fainting, Little Barnacles. And the world! The world! It's one of the coolest, most creative I've read about in, like, forever and stuff! I've told Veronica several times that she needs to forget about the romantic crap and turn this into an honest UF series, but the evil woman just won't listen to the voice of ancient wisdom! Freaking stubborn that one.

This book is not overflowing with Sugar-Shock Inducing Lovey Dovey Crap (SSILDC™). Okay, this is Paranormal Romance *shudders* so the Lovey Dovey Crap is kind of a prerequisite here, but at least the story wasn't aggressively sappy. I mean, I didn't convulse while I was reading the book, or have one of my Pathetic Romance Induced Seizures (PRIS™), so it's not that bad. I survived it, so I'm pretty sure 99,999999% of the universe population might, too. Well a few freaks might think there isn't enough Pathetic Romance in the book, but what will you do? Creeps will be creeps. PS: there might be a slightly disgusting HEA at the end of this book *sighs* Well at least the silly author didn't throw in a bunch fluffy bunnies, cute kitties and pastel-colored rainbows. So I guess I should consider myself really lucky here.

» And the moral of this I didn't Rate this Book 4.5 Stars you Must Have Been Dreaming Review (IdRhB4.5SyMHBDR™) is: there ain't no STUPID stupidity, there ain't no OTT crap, there ain't no tropes, there ain't no suicide-inducing stuff, there ain't no mush. It's all good, it's all awesome, it's all hot. And yet it's Freaking PNR. Will wonders never cease?

Book 1: Magic Resistant - Veronica said I shouldn't read it. So I didn't. Go me.
Book 2: Sylvia's Torment ★★★★
Book 3: Dawn's Keeper ★★★★
Book 3.5: Assassinated Love ★★★

Book 4.6: Dabbling in Magic ★★★★★

☠ Because Veronica Del Rosa is slightly deranged and sent me an ARC for her upcoming PNR *shudders* novel. Such a fearless girl she is.

☠ Because Veronica Del Rosa is kind of a lovely girl one of the very very very few PNR authors this side of the universe who do not make me want to kill their books with fire.

☠ Because Veronica Del Rosa promised there would be fight scenes with dismemberment, blood, and gore in this instalment. Talk about dangling a carrot in front of a donkey. Excitement is me.

I’m actually further ahead in this series, but missed this one in the reading order. Oops!

Even with my chronological difficulties (lol) this was another exciting and sensual Enforcers & Coterie installment. It sort of read like a PNR/spy thriller fusion, which was pretty awesome.

Isabella was a strong, smart, determined character, as are all of Ms. Del Rosa’s heroines, and I just love that. Sexy mage Victor was enthralled by our leading lady, which ya gotta love. I was definitely rooting for them both, but didn’t quite connect with them as much as I have with some other E&C couples. But that just means there’s something there for everyone in this super cool (and now completed!) series.

I don't know where to begin. This author writes books that makes it hard for me to get my wits together to write a decent review because they usually leave me speechless. If you are a PNR/UF fan and you haven't read this series, why have you the freaking hell not yet, because seriously this series is EVERYTHING you're looking for in any PNR/UF book. You want an excellently-written story? You want an awesome plot? You want a unique take of the world of the paranormal? You want characters that fascinate and amuse the hell out of you? You want a bit of romance? You want hot sex scenes? You want action? You want violence and gore (just a tiny smidge, not a lot that makes you uncomfortable if you're not into that thing, merely vivid imagery for your enjoyment)? Well, look no further because you've got it all right here!

I'm going to come back to review this more properly a little while later.

Victor, Victor, Victor.

What to say about a smart-mouthed sexy mage who's got a little something darker going on inside? Give me more, of course!

This book is tightening the screws in Del Rosa's fascinating UF world. The Enforcer's may have the evil scientists on the run, but the effects of their mad experiments are still being felt. Especially for Isabella, a soft-hearted human who couldn't ignore a plea for help and got a life lesson in the cruelest way. Injected with demon essence, Isabella has become a hybrid...at the mercy of a monster who makes her previous captors look kind and sweet-tempered. A monster with plans that could unravel the peace achieved between the races....

Victor's job as Enforcer means he's seen a lot of cruelty, a lot of ugliness, but what was done to Isabella effects him in a way he wasn't sure was possible anymore. When he runs into the woman he's been searching for months in a back alley, he's stunned.

Especially since she's trying to kill him.

I loved this book! The magic was badass, the fights were more so and the sexy was HOT! (hint, take the title literally, teehee!)

One of the best in this series, with cameos by old favorites and secrets unraveling faster than a spell in a magic-dead room, if you love UF or PNR you have got to check out this author!!

I absolutely LOVE this series and can't wait to read more. I love how the series is connected, but if you only read one of them you don't feel like you are missing something! I think that can be challenging at times for an author, but Veronica knows how to. The plot is as usual intricate with some well placed twist that makes it very difficult to put this book down!

In this book she focuses on Victor and Isabella. Both very likable characters and both add beautifully to this story! I also like how some of the others make some appearances which really makes you feel like "part of the family".

This book does not leave you on a cliff hanger, but there are some mysteries you still wonder about and can't wait to find out, like the Revenant! However, once you read one of this series, odds are you will want to read all the others available!

I look forward for more books to be released in this series! I actually purchased this book after reading a couple that were given to me by the author for an honest review. I got so hooked I ended up buying all the ones I haven't read. Sadly I am up to date now and can't wait to get my hands on more.

** I was gifted a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.**

'Chained in Desire' blew me away. Once I started reading, I had a hard time putting it down. The storyline was well written and well thought out. As with the previous books in the 'Enforcers and Coterie Series', this book was full of action, wars between species, deceit (naturally), romance and suspense. I love the creativity Veronica DelRosa brings to her stories. They have a way of drawing you in and not letting go. The characters were an amazing array of beings. As I said, very creative. The descriptive nature of each scenario was believable and exciting. Isabella is such a bad-ass. She has definitely become quite a force to be reckoned with. Victor is still sexy and so funny. I loved the humor and banter between him and anyone he encountered. His sarcasm was great. (One of my personal favorite characteristics.) This whole series is a must read. A great add to your tbr list. Definitely recommended.
