Sons of Templar MC #4

Beyond the Horizon

Rate this book
Life is counted in tiny breaths, ones that measure the length of your existence. Life stole the ability to make those breaths easy when Lily was nine years old. Turned her quiet. Made her curl into herself, and shut out a world that threatened to bury her under its weight.

The end of her world is what brings him back—her biker. His chocolate eyes pierce her soul while his club tempts her with a life that she didn’t know she could ever have. Especially not when she was clutching the tattered remains of her existence, and with a weight bearing down on her which makes her unfit for the role of Old Lady. Asher changes that. He wants to set about repairing it, repairing her and her broken world. The problem is, even his strong shoulders can’t carry the burden of her sorrow.

Asher doesn’t take no for an answer. She may have given him her heart three years ago, but never in her wildest dreams would she imagine she had possessed his for the same amount of time.

Just when it seems like she may be able to ride off into the horizon, the world isn’t quite finished trying to rob her of breath. Of life.

Anne Malcom has been an avid reader since before she can remember, her mother responsible for her book addiction. It started with magical journeys into the world of Hogwarts and Middle Earth, then as she grew up her reading tastes grew with her. Her obsession with books and romance novels in particular gave Anne the opportunity to find another passion, writing. Finding writing about alpha males and happily ever afters more fun than reading about them, Anne is not about to stop any time soon.

You don’t know your strength until you face the fire...

It’s been a wee while since I’ve read a - biker / motorcycle club / stripper / bar worker / clubhouse - type of book. It’s not that I don’t like these types of books, it’s just that I think I overloaded on them a bit. I think the break did me good. When I started Beyond The Horizon, I remembered all the good parts of a biker romance. We have the tough, good looking biker dude who deals in bad stuff, but is a real sweetheart with his “old lady”. This particular “old lady” is carrying a few war wounds. It’s taking all that our hero has to make his woman realise how precious she is to him. She wants to stand on her own two feet so she doesn’t become dependent on him, to lose him like she has lost her mother. What she doesn’t realise is that he doesn’t want to take over her life he just wants her days filled with colour.

Lily’s mother, Faith, has just passed after a three-year battle with cancer. Seeing her mother suffering like that was not easy, but having her gone is worse. Faith was Lily’s life and it was a bit of a reversal of jobs for the two of them. Faith’s job as an artist, left Lily running the household. Lily spent her days at the hospital with her mum and her nights working at a bar. She had taken time off her studies to become a nurse because she just couldn’t do it all. Now with her mother gone, it’s time for Lily to come out of her shell and try to live a normal life.

There is a slight problem, Lily is SHY…like really, really shy. Panic attack, asthma attack shy. If Lily is in an unfamiliar situation she does not cope. She finds one coping mechanism that kind of works….alcohol. It doesn’t really fix it, but it certainly gives her strength and an ability to become someone else. In the three years Lily has been looking after her mother, she can’t forget the one night of passion that could have been so much more…but she pushed him away. Now he's back and he's not taking no for an answer.

Asher is a member of the Sons of Templar and has been since he left the Navy. The other members are his family and his closest friends have found their “old lady’s”. He wants his woman with him too. The problem is, he knows who she is, but she is absolutely petrified of the feelings they have for each other. He's lived three years without her and he doesn't want to wait any longer.

I enjoyed Beyond The Horizon and I was glad to experience the MC world again. I’m sure bikie gangs are probably not the same as in romance books, but it’s kind of sweet to read about these big tough dudes who bring the wife and kids to the clubhouse. There’s a little bit of the feral in each of these types of stories, with skanky chicks, strip joints, and booze aplenty. Sex is mostly against walls but also has been known to be on the kitchen bench or while straddling bikes. A slip of the panties to the side…and there he blows!!

GEEZ…this chick can cry. Besides her mother dying, she also has long-seated issues she never overcame, dealing with an abusive father. He died while she was still really young, but the wounds were already in place. I just felt like poor Asher was never going to win with her. She pushes him away numerous times when she is facing some sort of crisis. His frustration jumps off the pages, but Lily still feels justified every time she does it. The worst part is, he has to come in and save the day nearly every time anyway.

There are douchewaffle baddies to deal with and Bex, Lily’s best friend seems to bring even more drama to Lily’s life.

So, even though I had a couple of issues, I still really enjoyed Beyond The Horizon. This was #4 in the series, and my first book by this author. I didn’t have any troubles following along without reading the ones before but I may go back to them in the future. I’m kind of thinking that the next in the series is Bex and Lucky’s story, and I will definitely be interested in reading that one.

★Review★

I love this series, I think it is not only one of my favorite MC series, but one of my favorite series of all time.

And it gets better with each book.

And it is, in many ways a "typical" mc romance, you know, dodgy dealings, rough and tough alpha men, skirting the line of what is legal (or just straight hopping over that line) etc.

But it is so much more, especially the last couple of books, and even though I enjoyed the first two in the series, I feel the last couple have reached new heights.

The author is not afraid to deal with tough subjects, attempted suicides, characters dying that you may have fallen in love with and half expected to get his own book (no worries she does not mess with a HEA) , grief, drink issues etc.

All done in such a way that it adds an emotional depth to the series that can be missing from other MC romances. This is not an MC series, where the drama comes from it being an MC series, yes there is drama and ongoing issues that the guys are having, but there is more to it that cause the emotion and the pain to jump off the page. These are people with painful issues that they have to deal with, they just happen to be in an MC and trying to deal with all that drama too.

I have often felt while reading MC books, they are almost akin to a fantasy series, they are so far removed from my own reality, and the characters can come across as a bit one dimensional and almost like a caricature of a member of a MC, making it hard at times to connect to the hero or heroine.

But here, I feel like I can connect to the characters more. I mean, yes there is the odd kidnapping or other drama, but it is in experiencing along with the main character the pain they are dealing with that you can truly feel for them.

And it is no different here, the heroine has just lost her Mom and watching her struggle to deal with it, or not deal with it at times was heartbreaking. Lily was a great character, on top of her grief, she suffers from Anxiety and has allowed this to colour her life since she was a child, and led her to having serious self doubt.

And Asher, when you realise how long he had waited and loved Lily, you could not help but fall in love a little with him. And when he decided that he was not going to wait for her any longer and not allow her to push him away, it was great.

It was so close to a five, and maybe this is just me being a bit picky, but I actually noticed the lack of this. The characters state the MC is their family, but I sort of miss the family. Yes, we had some Cade and Brock, less of Gwen and a lot less of Ames, some Bull, no Mia, and what happened to the biker in book 1 and 2, that the girls called Dwayne? And where did Gage come from, he appeared in book 3, so is he Dwayne? There was some Steg, no Evie at all in the last 2 books, and no mention any more of the couple who was mentioned in book 1, Ranger and Lizzie? I know, especially as a series goes on, it is hard to mention everyone, but they are meant to be family, and it is like some of the secondary characters that make up this family have disappeared. And for picky old me, I notice that lack sometimes.

Lots of Lucky though! I love him, hope he he is next. I am gearing myself up for his story after the events of this book.

But a great 4.5 stars.

Surprisingly romantic and sweet for a biker book. I was very impressed and the H was very well done. There were all kinds of surprises and some twists I did not see coming, with real world reactions to grief that I actually believed.

In a way I am kinda perturbed, I haven't read any of the other books in this series and now my TBR list has to be all rearranged.

Still, if you like MC books where the H's are devoted and Alpha and the h's aren't completely TSTL, this is a great one to try.

This was my least favorite book in the series. I could not wrap my head around Lily or Bex (Lily's best friend). Cheating, wishy-washy, self-destructive, alcoholic, strung-out drug abusers (her BFF) who want to wallow in self-pity and bad decisions are just not hot to me. I really could not see why Asher was so taken with Lily.

*re-read
You know a book is going to be something if you start crying on page one of a book and soon need a box of tissue because the tears don’t stop. This book is so full of emotions from heart wrenching pain to beautiful new love blossoming into a love that you know will last a lifetime and everything else in between. This series has quickly become a favorite that I can’t seem to get enough of while I’m always wait for the next book to come.

Three years ago Lilly met and had the most memorable nigh to her life with Asher. The next day her life forever changed when she learned her mom has cancer. It was always just Lily and her mom till her mom passed away. Now on the day of her mom’s funeral Lilly isn’t sure how she can ever survive without the one person always in her corner. What Lily never thought would happen was to seeing her friends Gwen and Amy with the MC, including Asher. Seeing him on the worst day of her life Lilly still feels the emotions she has always felt for Asher and they are just as strong if not stronger.

Asher couldn’t believe Lily was gone that morning and he really can’t believe he has held out all hope Lily will come back, just when he thinks it may be time to finally move on Asher hears about Lily’s mom and knows he will never be able to let her go. Coming back into Lily’s life isn’t easy or anything he thought it would be but Lily will always be Lily and he will never get enough of her.

Trying to get Lily back is not what Asher thought but the more they learn about each other the more they want to be together and the more scared Lily is. Lily grew up in fear and loosing her mom isn’t the only thing Lily struggles with. Now Lilly will have to decide if she can finally trust in a relationship with Asher and if it’s worth putting herself out there for a possible heartbreak or if she can live with herself walking away.

I love this series; Anne Malcom drags you into her stories and keeps you riveted with her words, she make you fall in love with her characters and at the same time can write heartbreak so profound it feels like your heart is actually breaking. I loved Lily and Asher, yes Lilly struggles with accepting their relationship but when you see all she has went through you get it. Asher is all in and when Lily isn’t so sure Asher is sure enough for them both. This is a book that pulls at your emotions weeks after reading, and it’s also a book that if re-read worthy.

We not only get great main characters (and yes they are great) but we also get to see previous main characters and see how they are doing. Mrs. Malcom also introduces us to new characters as well as giving us more insight into characters we don’t know tons about. You know an author is talented when she can make you hate or dislike characters and then make you love them and Anne does that. Not to mention any author who writes an epilogue will have a little piece of my heart. I can’t wait for the next book in this serious but if you want me to be really honest I just want any book from her. I can’t wait for the next book and there are so any characters that I hope get a book. I can’t recommend this book enough, but fair warning bring some tissue:}

Thank you Anne Malcom for this ARC/Beta read.

Asher knew when he met Lily that she was special, he wanted to explore it but she pushed him away. He walked away once, but realizing why she closed herself off, Asher is not walking away again. The only stability in Lily's life is her best friend Bex, aside from that she is alone, drowning in herself. Asher coming back into her life is like a bright light, but Lily is afraid of everything Asher is, with him she has to breathe again but does she want to?

This is a complicated story and I don't want to divulge too much without given the plot away. I have to say there were a couple of shockers I was not expecting. Loved Asher, he understands Lily who is awkwardly shy. I thought Lily's struggles were so real, shed several tears in this book. Another phenomenal read from Anne Malcom.

3.0-3.25 RATING- I'm a little torn on my rating... I loved the hero, the story was okay, overall I'm a fan of the series.... Unfortunately, the heroine was a bit of a hard sell for me (big surprise!). I admit to being hard on heroines in general - so what's annoying to me likely isn't an issue for other readers. But I just didn't like her at different points in the story. I understood she had some issues, her life had been hard, but her maturity level left a lot to be desired. IDK. I wanted to pull for her, I really did, but I think the hero could have done better.

3 stars, the writing is definitely getting better but I'm still skimmimng the pages a lot because I guess it's the author's style to dilly-dally her characters especially the heroine. There's just so many scenes that's not that important yet they just keep appearing. That's why I still skim the pages a lot. Not to mention the unnecesarry "fight" with Aiden that's been nothing but understanding and kind toward the heroine. I mean, of course he's going to be mad and concern when a quiet and smart girl starts hanging out with bikers. I wish the author made the heroine act wiser and more mature.

So yeah, overall a good story but lacks in details. Look forward to finally read Lucky's story!

Another amazing read from Anne Malcom. Lily and Asher's story is heartbreaking at times and I felt this book was beautifully and carefully written with such a serious subject matter. Don't get me wrong - there were still plenty of laughs and hot chemistry but also more.
I really look forward to the next read in this series.

I found the h so annoying. Sorry folks, not my cup of tea.

Also, for those that look for safety in books, this is a second chance romance. There is a 3 year separation and the H sleeps with club whores while the h doesn’t. Technically they had a one night stand and the h told the H to get lost. It’s not as if they were dating.

DISCLAIMER TO MY FELLOW GOODREADER
This review is my personal opinion and may contain: spoilers, quotes, rants and swearing.

23 year old Lily Smith has suffered from extreme anxiety in social situations, with new people and in crowds for as long as she can remember. Her best friend Bex is the only person left that knows what demons she fights back as each day begins. They met her freshmen year in college when everything was simpler. But things have changed. Lily is now faced with figuring out who she is in this world. Then 29 year old Asher Breslin rides back into her life after three years determined to make her see herself the way he always has.

“Beauty is on the surface, flower. Temporary. Something that fades, withers. Being truly beautiful is when you’ve known suffering, fought demons at the depths of despair and managed to claw your way out. Managed to smile again. Managed to laugh, to live, to love. That’s eternal. That’s you.”

"You're different. There's no one that can equal you, babe. You take up every inch of my sight. It takes every inch of my concentration to see into you. You're not pretending to be anyone. You're just you. There's no comparison."

"You're so fuckin' convinced shit's gonna turn sour you can't see what's right in front of you. That is do everything in my power to make sure what's beyond that horizon is just as beautiful as you deserve, and that I'll be there as long as my body is taking breaths."

I am a super big fan of flashbacks.

ASHER IS SWOONY

I will say that this book hasn't been my favorite I still loved the drama and the story. I definitely think the reason I had a problem was Lily. Even though I thought she was strong I was pissed off how she played in my opinion the pity me card instead of showing a true strength and asking for help. Now Asher is just too swoony for words!!!!

This is the fourth book I have read in this series. I've said it with each book, Anne Malcom has talent.

In Beyond Horizon we meet a woman, Lily, who has suffered great loss and has way too much anxiety because of it. Lily meets Asher and holy heck, from the moment those two meet I loved Asher's dirty talk. He immediately says things that make you go Dayum and the chemistry is great!

Asher has to be Lily's rock. He is patient and Oh, so sweet. At times, I did feel like he was too sweet. I wanted more biker gruff, but that could just be because I'm married to a biker and prefer it that way.

I would have also liked to see a little bit more from the other club ladies. They are so enjoyable.

This book reads like a contemporary romance so if you're not sure on motorcycles I think you would still enjoy this.

Overall Anne Malcom delivers a captivating, sexy and romantic novel.

Oh, and we were left with some questions on Bex, Lily's BFF and Lucky, another member of The Sons of Templar. Can't wait to hear how that one plays out!

Asher and Lily's story.

While we didn't really see much of these two in the first three books, there story was just as demanding to be heard as the others. To be honest, this book was a bit more sad and depressing. There is a LOT of angst in this book and it hurts to read some of it. But it is also a very beautiful story.

Anne Malcom writes alpha males that are all demanding and possessive yet different and unique in their own way. And this is how all the Sons of Templar men are portrayed. With Asher, I'd say the relationship and journey with Lily was a little more rougher than all the other guys. Lily is truly dependant and doesn't like to bother people. And with the recent loss of her mother, Lily feels alone and depressed. She can't be the girl Asher wants her to be and that's why she keeps him at arm's length.

I honestly can't write for Anne's books anymore because I am literally just repeating myself. Her books are EVERYTHING! She perfectly portrays my favourite type of alpha male & writes heroines that are stubborn and determined. I love it!

Continuing on with this series - book 4 about Asher. 2.5 stars. I never really became too invested in this couple. It had all the typical alpha biker qualities......I just didn't quite fall for it. Banter and chemistry were stale??!? hate to say it! If this had been a standalone I probably would have DNF'ed.

But I finished listening to it because I did want to continue on with this series. As far as the series goes - this one is a bit on the outer circle. I felt like the first 3 books were more inner circle and connected within all the characters from the first 3 books. While this one is still in the club and had all the characters it starts to branch to more of the guys from the club and additional stuff not really related to the first 3 couples as much as a series could be. Although the usual more than enough times someone gets kidnapped or taken away from their man!!! kind of got old.

Probably my favorite except Asher really had to talk Lily into everything as this girl had serious worthiness issues and then grief when her mom dies. Lots of dialog and rabbit like sexy times from Asher.

Y me enerva.

I know I'm wrong in searching for HEA in books but I can't help myself books are my happy place so when a character has many qualities that resembles you in RL you just hold dear to that character that much more, and that's why I love Lily so much and made me love this book so much more. Living with social anxiety is hell and I felt like the description of what Lily felt was spot on so to see Archer so understanding of her and loving her so fiercefully as has every guy of The Son of Templar it was beautiful. So you see I might not have my HEA in RL but man how I love those in my books...

Fantastic addition to the Sons of Templar Series.

Beyond The Horizon is Lilly and Asher's story, Not only was there all kinds of surprises in store for us we got some twists and turns that I did not see coming as well. It was jam packed with the feelings and it was like a roller-coaster of emotions throughout. It dealt with real world problems and the reactions to grief were amazingly done.

We got so much of Lucky, I love him.. I am gearing myself up for his story after the events of this book. I'm loving this series and Anne Malcom comes up with the most amazing secondary characters that make her books so exciting to read. I'm already on to the next one.

So. Here's the thing. This book would have been an amazing, can't-stop-reading five star extravaganza...if...well, if a few things were different. (Watch out there be *minor* spoilers here)

1. Lily waiting until 85% to actually start to lean on Asher. I understand that she was grieving in her boozy ways with her equally messed up (but still awesome bff, Bex - who should be the heroine in the next book...if not, I may write hate mail to Anne Malcom *jkjk*) BUT I mean - COME ON! I'm all for a realistic look at grieving but this is a romance book. Belief is suspended when it comes to the H/h...just sayin.
2. They got married out of nowhere. It happened too abruptly. I loved that it happened but it was just too out of left field. (PS Yes, this is a major spoiler...but is it really? I mean...come on! Romance? H/h gets married? Was it really out of the realm of believability?)
3. All the action happened at the 95%-100% - Don't get me wrong, I wasn't ever bored, per se, but I was getting there.
4. I wished that there was an EPILOGUE. I need them to feel five star happy. I just do.
5. There was a cliffhanger. Sort of. It wasn't necessarily the strict textbook definition of a cliffhanger but it was close enough for me...especially without #4. (PS - Not with the main couple but with, hopefully, the next book's main couple.

Even with these things, I loved this book. I loved that the heroine wasn't uber rich and talk about clothes and purses and her amazing house...That was fine for Gwen and Amy but I'm glad to author chose to branch out. I'll be REALLY REALLY interested in Bex because her story? Shit. Her story will be heartbreaking and powerful. Or at least I hope it will be...

PS - Anne Malcom if you read this (doubtful, I know) please don't pull a Chloe (The Sarah Brianne book) or in other words, retell this story through the eyes of Bex and wait until 95% to give us any new information. I'll scream. I'll yell. I'll return your book. Thank you. Have a nice day. Lol
