A thrilling retelling of the Robin Hood adventure with a fun gender flip. When tax collectors raid her village, headstrong peasant Robyn vows to take everything back. Her righteous spirit lands her on the 'wrongteous' side of the law. Attempts to fix things only makes life worse as Robyn, and her best friend Marion the blacksmith's son, fall deeper into trouble . . . and a little bit in love.
This is the third book I've read by Ebony McKenna and I must compliment her for taking a classic story and making it her own while still keeping the adventure wheel spinning. I found her latest YA book: Robyn and the Hodettes: The Outlaw of Folktales as wildly adventurous as the original Robin Hood story. Her female protagonist is a fiery, strong, carefree and passionate and as she risks everything for her village proves a woman can be anything she wants to be!
WOW what a fun story this one was one of my favourite stories with a twist I mean who doesn’t love Robin Hood and his merry men and when Robin becomes Robyn the female and Marion becomes the male then this really called to me and I did very much enjoy it.
This one is filled with lots of adventure and fun as Robyn and her close family and friends’ band together by chance when they are trying to outwit the tax collectors times were tough back then and end up helping the poor with food and some safety and protection against Maudlin the liege Lord and Roger of Doncaster. There is lots of laughter along the way as they become outlaws and as Robyn’s friend, giant Joan and her smash em attitude save Robyn a few times and of course this is a YA romance so to see Marian a wonderful strong blacksmith and the smart Robyn start to notice each other and share a kiss or two along the way as they plan their adventures because they have to have a plan will have you smiling.
MS McKenna has bought the characters to life in a different gender than the original but in such a great way with a lots of action and fun although aimed at the young adult I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good book that will keep you turning the pages and of course Robyn and Marion will make you smile I loved this one thank you Ms McKenna for a fabulous story.
Robyn & the Hoodettes by Ebony McKenna This book from start to finish is one that kept my interest and well lost sleep because I was so intrigued. The story is about Robyn and her group of friends she accumulates It is a story of men going off to join a crusade, women and children being left behind to fight off the tax collectors that are there to take everything that is valuable. Robyn and her group would dress to be mistaken for boys so that she would not be recognized. Ebony McKenna has a way to tell the story that you for sure feel you are right there with them during their adventures. Robyn has a young friend named Joan who is quite large for her age and she loves to smash. Robyn does have a slight interest in Marion who is the blacksmith’s son. They do share a kiss or two along the way in planning their adventures. During their adventure they have been thrown into a dungeon, their village where they lived with parents has been burned, and much more A fun read and one you will not be disappointed in. Have fun reading the modern day tale of Robin Hood and his merry men with the twist of female Robin Hood.
In Robyn and the Hoodettes, Ebony McKenna took the familiar story of Robin Hood and gave it an interesting twist. In this version, Robyn is a young lady and she inadvertently becomes an outlaw, stealing from the tax collectors to give back to the peasants. She amasses a band of hoodettes to join in her escapades. Marion, the blacksmith’s son and the voice of reason, helps Robyn come up with plans and supports her throughout their adventures.
The story is very easy to read, it’s fun, adventurous and the romance that blooms between Robyn and Marion is heart-warming. This is a very clever twist on the original legend, well done to Ebony McKenna!
A fun YA story with a twist. Everyone knows the story of Robin Hood and Marion but Ebony McKenna decided to stir it up a bit. In her enjoyable story that takes place in medieval times this Robyn is a young lady and Marion is a man. Marion is truly her sidekick and helps her with all she does and adds an element of cuteness to the story. Being an outlaw would seem like mans work as she steals from the tax collectors and helps the poor people, however she is independent but truly feminine in all the ways that count. Marion throws some cute lines to her that make you smile. This is a really fun read with both characters adding to the enjoyment.
This book is an entry in the Aurealis Awards for 2016, for which I am a judge. Any review will be withheld until the results of the awards are announced.
"Robyn & The Hoodettes: The Outlaw of Folktales in a Young Adult Fairytale Romance" by Ebony McKenna is my first read from this author and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Think of the fairytale we grew up reading about, and twist it with a female as the main character. Robyn is a strong, independent woman who knows what she wants and the male lead Marion is her best friend. The sparks between them are undeniable.
A quirky take on a feminized Robin Hood tale with a hint of romance!
When so-called tax collectors raid her village, feisty Robyn vows to get their stuff back! She rallies together with friends and family to try to overtake the bad guys. Along the way, they meet with problems and have to work on the other side of the law somewhat themselves, but always with the intent of helping those less fortunate.
Quite a fun and adventurous take on Robin Hood which I quite enjoyed for something different.
Smuggling in wheat for people to eat starts a chain of events for peasant Robyn and the adventure starts from there and took me on a humorous and fast paced adventure.
A great read and aimed at the YA market I think this is a fab read.
