Jonathan Shade #8

Vertigo Effect

Lights, Magic, Murder!

Going undercover as a movie stuntman in Florida sounds like fun. Of course, the last guy died, and while on the surface it looks like an accident, there are hints that there could be a murderous witch in the crew. Why else would I find a spent hex bag on set?

Now I'm tracking a murderer, and that means the movie might not be the only thing to get shot on location.

That was great!! Loved them being in Florida. Also very happy things are getting better between Jonathon and Kelly, i still wish Kelly was the old Kelly.

Jonathan and Kelly are employed as stunts in a movie to investigate the tragic death of another stuntman. Foul play is suspected but no one seems to have enough motives to have killed this man.

This is one of my urban fantasy favorite series, and I was looking to this audiobook since I finished the previous one. Jonathan, Kelly, and Esther are finally settled in their new timeline, so this book a bit more straightforward than previous ones in that respect. The audiobook was a delight to listen to: plenty of action and intrigue, and while Kelly is not the same person as before, the group dynamics feel more like the old ones. I think that this change in Kelly allows for a different and deeper evolution that will have pleasant surprises in the future.

I was hooked to the story from the start. We do not know this dead stuntman, but the circumstances of his death were strange enough to grab my attention. The secondary characters were picturesque and interesting, as in previous books, and they felt distinctive enough that I was able to see them with my mind’s eye.

Joe Hempel’s narration was absolutely flawless and exquisite, no news here. It is not only that it didn’t disturb the story but it elevated it and made the characters more human. There were differences in voices that made following dialogues easy, but those differences were also subtle, which made the dialogues sound natural and the characters alive. Joe Hempel was already one of my favorite narrators before this series, and I am glad that he decided to narrate it, which led me to discover Jonathan Shade’s world.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I really enjoyed this book. This is book eight and so far the latest Jonathan Shade book (when is the rest coming to audible?) So I have been putting it off until I needed something exciting to get lost in. I started it today and was only going to listen to a little bit, four hours later I had finished the book. The story didn't disappoint and I was hooked. I must admit I have been getting lost in this series with all the time travel or alternative realities but this book was back to Jonathan at his best, solving and fighting magical crimes. I loved the plot with Jonathan and Kelly as stunt doubles and it certainly went in a different direction to what I was expecting towards the end. The comradery between the characters that has been sadly lacking in the last couple of books is beginning to come back, which in my opinion is what makes this a great series and I am eagerly awaiting the next book.
Jonathan and Kelly are going in undercover as stuntmen when a friend asks them to investigate the apparent accidental death of a stuntman working on a bit budget film. Even with the death caught on camera the police still came it to be an accident , it is only when his girlfriend shows Jonathan the hex bag that he turns his skills to finding a killer rather than staring in a movie.
I really like the narrator and think he puts in an amazing performance as Jonathan and friends. His soothing voice made the hours just fly by. When witches, ghosts and senator's are involved things are going to get tricky.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I enjoyed this entertaining story, though it is a bit shorter than the previous Shade books. Disguised as stuntmen, Jonathon Shade and Kelly Chan are called in to investigate a suspicious death that occurred during a movie stunt. One that might have been caused by a witch. This story has plenty of action, humour, magic, intrigue and the great characters we known from the prior books. Jon and Kelly are still getting acclimatizing to one another and the strain in their relationship comes through well. Ester remains the same loyal ghost we have grown to love and Jon is still sarcastic and has some cheesy lines. I really do miss the old Kelly, this new one seems a bit flat and hasn’t grown on me yet. Joe Hempel does a excellent job of the narration in the audiobook, the characters are easily distinguishable and the emotions come through well. I really am enjoying this series and you can’t help but want to see how the relationships will develop and what will happen to them all in the future. I look forward to hearing the next audiobook in the set.

( Format : Audiobook )
"All the King's horses and all the King's men...."
At last, Jonathan, Kelly and let's not forget Esther, are back and on a case: the death of a stuntman which everyone other than his fiancee believes is accidental. But she is convinced it was murder and, being a low level wizard, she knows an hex bag when she sees one.

The Jonathan Share stories are always a pleasure: great supernatural stories with lots of action but still plenty of time for humour and personality development. Narration is by the excellent Joe Hempel, always a pleasure to hear, giving a perfectly paced performance and breathing even more life into the various characters (even those that might be dead!) with panache and obvious enjoyment. A fine performance.

A always a pleasure, Vertigo Effect is annother fun, fantasy listen and highly recommended to all who enjoy the genre. My thanks to the rights holder who, at my request freely, gifted me with a complimentary copy. Such fun.

Jonathan and team are off to the movies, following an unexplained death they are hired to investigate, under the cover of stuntmen. Another good edition to the series, although still not happy with the new dynamic between Shade and Kelly.

Working on a movie set!

What a different way to solve a murder. But then strange things happen to the so called victim. And then the movie was not the main event any more. But the ending of this story was not much, just more bedroom stuff.

The book started really well. I was so glad to see Jonathan and Kelly working together again. But, after a point, somewhere in the middle, I got a little bugged. Probably due to the following reasons:
1. How did the dead man come back? How was he enthralled by the creature from the depths of hell?
2. How did the movie stars who hated each other start dating and suddenly end up as lackeys to a strange zombie?
3. Why was Angela decapitated and these two left alive?
4. Who's that witch that managed to enthrall Kelly?
And of course how could Kelly lose her katana? That's just sad. I loved her sword scenes.
Still a good racy read. I'm going to try the books written with Kelly as lead next.

Decent, but lacked the depth of previous installments.
This was all about the case with not much about Kelly/Jonathan's relationship,
And really, outside slight leanings, nothing about Brenda/Jonathan's relationship.
So it was a pretty good read, but I wish there were a bit more meat to it than repeating something in a different shade (No pun intended), than the second series of 3.
