Reader This was previously published under the same title. Although it’s been re-edited and minimal content added and removed, the story itself is the same from the original. There's only one man Gillian's ever loved, and it's the man who used to be married to her mother. The years have gone by, and her relationship with David was closer than ever. But what she wanted from him she knew she could never have.
David saved Gillian seven years ago from an attack. After that, his feelings for her changed into something dangerous. He would do anything for her, even if that meant following her and making sure she was safe.
He wasn't ashamed in what he did, because it was all in the name of love. But when another man took an interest in Gillian, David knew he couldn't stand by and let that happen.
3/5 "When it seemed like I was breaking, like everyone around me was going in the other direction, you were always there."
TROPES: ~forbidden love ~ex-stepfather x stepdaughter ~age gap ~protector
I was not a fan of this book. But first, let me explain what it's about! Gillian has always been in love with her ex-stepfather, David. Seven years ago he saved her from an attempted rape and since then she's been completely obsessed with him. What she doesn't know is that he's just as obsessed. He's been following her around since the assault years ago. What happens when she goes on a date with someone else? What about David's dark history, will he ever confess to her?
So. This book. The heroine has been in love with her stepfather for 7 years but it's hinted that she's slept around (she says she's "certainly not a virgin/prude". The hero stays celibate during that time. I HATE THAT. This book was well written, yes, and the smut is great, yeah- but it made me feel gross. I was looking forward to reading this and all I feel now is disappointment.
SAFETY: Virgin/celibate?: no virgins, celibate hero OM/OW?: yes. OM- she goes on a date and he kissed her Cheating/sharing?: no Triggers: attempted SA/rape, drugging of heroine (not by H) Kinks: dirty talk, anal play, rough sex HEA? yes
Did not like this one. It was a book on repeat. I swear I was in the twilight zone.
They both kept saying the same thing. I love him but he can't know, I love her but she can't know.
Gillian was an idiot. She kept saying how grown up she was but I didn't see it. She made really stupid decisions. When David finally tells her he loves her she's like I don't know if we should do this. However!!! She kept playing these stupid games with him to see if he feels anything for her because she looooves him soooo much. It hurts. (Tears)
Now David was no better but I felt for him. Gillian almost got raped 7 years ago. David was the one who showed up and stopped it from happening. It totally fucked with his head. So he follows her. From work to home, to wherever. Just making sure she ends up safe at home. He's not smelling her underwear, or jerking off in the car. He sees she doesn't pay attention, lives in a bad area and all he wants is for it to never happen again.
Well he tells her all this after he confesses his love and how much that almost rape destroyed him. She freaks out, yells at him. Tells him to stay away and storms out. She goes weeks, I think, of not taking his calls to hear him out. We'll because she's to busy pouting over David she gets herself in yet another situation that could have really gone to crap but David saves the day again.
After this she loves him. Whatever. Of course she does....
It's a fast read, I just didn't care for it but I still enjoy Jenika Snow.
It wasn't a bad read, but not great either!? I liked their story. The bones were quite good, but some pieces of information were missing, and also, there were so many repeated thoughts. It was getting too much at some point. I was like, "Just talk it out, you guys!!", Since both were adults (h 27 and H ?? I'm not sure. Hence, I needed more info here and there).
It was a nice short reading while at the beach. 🤷♀️😅🤪
- age gap, how much not sure, I assume at least 15 - 20 years, since he's her ex step father - light stalking, just to keep her safe - mutual pinning - no V, celibate H (at least 7 years) - he's her knight in shining armor 🥺 - spicy - HEA and epilogue one year later
90 - The number of pages this book has 182 - The number of times the name Gillian is used 286 - The number of times the name David is used
Oh you know that shit irritates the fuck outta me. What is the bloody need!!!!! This isn't even told in third person, which would be slightly more understandable. NOPE NO NO NO NO NO.
Oh it was okay for a while there, not exactly exciting, but alright. Until it wasn't. I got bored. Rolled my eyes. David. Yawned. David. Angst. David. Stalker. David. Fight. David. Sex. David. DAVID DAVID DAVIDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.
It's not a one star rating because apart from DAVID driving me insane (and not with his massive horse dick), the story was okay. But just okay.
Great H that was insane for the h. He was so obsessed with her, he would follow her to make sure she was safe. The only issue I had was that he used to be her stepfather. I would have preferred it if he used to be her stepbrother. Anyway, I loved this H and want to read more stories with heroes like him.
Well WOW! These are the first words that I have to say. This does not touch on the fact that Gillian's has a daddy fantasy this is more like that man I love is married to my mother but got divorced now were just friends. This touches more along the lines of alpha-male protects his lady love and will do anything for her, even stalk her. Watching for the shadows he just wants to protect Gillian because of what happened to her and even though that is in the past the nightmares are still there.
5 Stalking-Stepfather-Stars! ☆☆☆☆☆ I loved it! :) the story had me hooked and my anxiety went haywire every time Gerald kept pushing himself on Gillian. I didn't trust him from the moment his sneaky butt popped up in the story.
"He knitted his brows and shook his head. “I have never had to try to have fucking dinner or a drink with a woman before you. I swear to hell you make things so damn difficult."
I know its weird to say, but thank god for David's compulsive stalking. He saved Gillian's life in multiple situations.
And of course when Jenika Snow writes a book, the sex scenes are off the charts good!
“Christ, baby.” He went slow and easy, in and out, gentle and thorough, but as the seconds moved by his motions became faster, harder. “Fucking hell, Gillian."
I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Didn't want to put it down! :)
I am a huge fan of Jenika Snow especially her and Sam Crescent's Soldiers of Wrath series but some of her books are way overpriced, I mean $3.99 for less than 100 pages is crazy. David was briefly married to Gillian's Mother and the two of them became close. Gillian is now 27 years old and when she was 20 she was drugged by a friend who attempted to rape her. Thankfully she was able to get to her cell phone and call David and he saved her before she was raped and he put the guy in the hospital. Ever since then David has been very protective of her to the point he follows her to make sure she's safe. They are both in love with each other but they're too afraid to say anything and ruin their great friendship. This was a quick and entertaining read but I wish there was more of a back story or at least an age for David.
Are you into the dark side of love? Then Only His is for you!
David and Gillian have been in love with each other for 7 torturous years. Torturous? Yes. Because neither of them know the others feelings are mutual.
After a traumatic event has David coming to Gillians rescue a dark beast within David is triggered. He becomes obsessed with Gillians safety. To the point of stalking her almost every move. When a turn of events shows Gillian who she is actually in love with, will it crush her dreams?
This is my confession: I, personally, wouldnt call this book 'taboo'. Dark, yes. Taboo? Not really. Yes, David was briefly married to Gillians mom years ago, but the backstory is VERY vague. This does not read like your typical 'Step' romance.
I liked the storyline for this book. I wish though that there could have been more content and events for the two MCs. A couple of times it felt like I was reading the same thing over and over. Gillian should have had more interaction with other people and almost felt like she actually had a bit of hero worship. I would also like to know more about David and how he was able to curb is stalking......
I am giving this book a 3.5 star review ..... but gave it a four since I have read this author before and know she can do great work.
David has known Gillian for a while. He was once married to her mother. When a terrible incident happened to Gillian, David became her protector. Ok, yes, he is a bit of a stalker. He was always watching Gillian. Actually, he was really protective and possessive of her. Gillian has had feelings for David for a while. The only issue with these two is that they just seemed to keep their feelings to themselves and don’t bring it out in the open from the beginning. So, it is a lot of banging your head waiting for them to get it together. Finally, when it does, we have an issue. Thank goodness for David.
There are some obsessive alpha males that when the say “Mine” over and over make you feel warm and fuzzy, David is not one of those. Don’t get me wrong, it was hot but it reminds of another book where the dad was obsessed with his wife that he killed her and himself because she loved their newborn baby and spent too much time with him. I see David ending up there eventually.
I would’ve liked it for the book to have a dual POV, I know it did start it with like their names and stuff. I was ok with the trope. He was a bit of a stalker towards her or at least that’s how I felt it was.
Longer than some of Jenika's other stories, I was surprised by how repetitive it became. We can't be together because it's taboo! Hero full of violence and rage. Heroine needing rescuing by hero for the exact same situation. Wanted to love it but it was just ok.
Started out so promising, but turned into such drivel. Beyond pitiful dialogue, and the action is no better. Just a waste of a great gimmick. And stupidly expensive too, for what it is.
TW - drugging of the the FMC (not by the MMC, recounted), violence, attempted rape (by secondary character to the FMC, recounted), SA (recounted), assault, stalking, insomnia, divorce (mentioned), nightmares
CW - taboo (ex step father), miscommunication / lack of communication
Tropes - taboo, forbidden (not really), novella, possessive, jealous, obsessed
It is becoming clear to me, after recently reading Hardcore and Mayhem, that I'm not a fan of Jenika's re-edited and re-released books because they are just not hitting for me like her books usually do.
This micommunication / lack of communication between the MCs really annoyed me in this book. They were both madly in love with each other but neither of them said anything because they either didn't want to ruin their friendship they have now or they thought it was wrong and I'm of the opinion that they should just fuck or fuck off.
I found there was nothing really forbidden about this a part from the MCs (kind of) making it out that it would be. For me, forbidden needs to also come from outside of the main relationship, whether it's society, friends, family or whoever who will perceive the relationship as wrong or that they're hiding it from someone. There was none of that, it kinda felt like the MCs lived in their own little world.
David (MMC) is the FMC's ex step father and I constantly questioned his age throughout this book because if she is 27, he is at least mid 40s. I found it extremely hard to believe that someone that age could act the way he did; it was almost pathetic. His anger and temper tantrums seemed like that of a teen and, while his age isn't disclosed, I couldn't believe he acted in the way he did throughout this book.
This was disappointing because it was honestly just bad. The MCs are basically trauma bonded because he saved her from nearly being raped. Given that, you'd probably think that she'd notice the signs with other men, but no, no sense of self preservation. Like the whole story was just 🥴
There are 2 smut scenes in this book and one of them is in the epilogue… I feel like this book would've benefited from being longer, the book starts with the characters already being in love with each other but not telling the other. We're not witness to any kind of intimacy between the 2 that isn't sex
Scale: ⭐️ - would've DNF'ed / continued out of spite ⭐️⭐️ - shit, but whatever ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - meh, could've been better ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - lit 👅 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - loved it, inject this shit into my veins 🤪
🫑 - no smut 🌶 - no point 🌶🌶 - mediocre at best 🌶🌶🌶 - standard smut, hot 🌶🌶🌶🌶 - 🥵 okay, some CW 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 - fuck me 🥵🥵 CWs / filthy with a side of filth - see Poison / Room Twenty-Two: Hide and Seek
Not sure if I liked or disliked this book? I think I got the ick after three paragraphs back to back started with He this He that He this. Of course she knows she loves David in the first 2 chapters fml. Art guy was cool until he wasn't. Does bourbon go with coffee??? Note to self come back for minor violence revenge inspo for book
Funny quotes/others I liked: - I thought a little cultural experience might do you some good. - Gillian opened her eyes, stared at her bedroom ceiling, and breathed through the temporary panic that assaulted her. - “I’ve embarrassed you,” Gerald said and chuckled. “Not my intent, but I’m pleased to have gotten a reaction out of you.” - She’d never seen him so raw, so broken. Right now, he looked like he could kill someone with his bare hands.
Smut: - (can someone think messy me is this cute) “I was wondering if you wanted to come over for some coffee.” Everything in him hardened at the thought of seeing her. She aroused him just by being in his presence, but when she was at home relaxing, he fucking got harder. Even now, he could imagine her in a pair of loose lounge pants and her shirt hanging from her but showing him she was all woman. Her hair would be messy, and she’d have it in a haphazard ponytail. God, he fucking loved everything about her. - For just a second, he could envision letting the cup drop to the ground, pulling her close, and claiming her mouth. She’d be his. Wouldn’t struggle. Wouldn’t say it was wrong. - He brought it to his mouth and repeated the action three times before finally turning around. The sweat was starting to dry on his body, and the scent of him dirty, untamed, and primitive filled her head. And because he didn’t know what the fuck he was doing and because he couldn’t have stopped himself if he even wanted to, he cupped his free hand on the back of her head, held her in place, and leaned forward. He kissed her like this was the last time he would ever see her, and maybe it was. What he expected was for her to pull away, to look at him with disgust, shock, or even hurt. What he didn’t expect was to hear her moan or to feel her kissing him back. - He curled his fingers into the soft flesh of her hips, knowing he’d leave marks on her delicate flesh if he weren’t gentle. - David lifted his gaze to her, and she held her breath at the intensity in it.
ARC received from author in exchange for an honest review
Gillian is in love with her ex-stepfather but she doesn't want to rock the boat of their friendship. Little does she know he secretly stalks her just to make sure that nothing happens to her after she was attacked when she was younger. Since then David's feelings toward his stepdaughter has changed but he doesn't know how she feels about him and so instead of telling her and maybe ruining their friendship he rather follows her around making sure that she is safe Gillian on the other hand has been in love with David since he rescued her from being attacked.
This story was definitely totally OTT alpha and totally stalker-ish. So if you into those kind of dark erotic books then this one is for you! For me, it was an okay read but a bit too stalkerish and David was a bit too much for me to take :-(
Thanks Jenika for allowing me to read and review :-)
David was once Gillian's "step-father", although they never had that father/daughter relationship. One night Gillian was in a situation and called David to help her. David saved Gillian and his feelings had totally changed for her that day. I guess I should mention, he is now divorced from Gillian's mother. He is obsessed with the one he doesn't feel he will ever have. Gillian feelings for David has grown over the years. She doesn't know if she is wrong for the way she is feeling for him. After a altercation, he has to tell her how he feels, but he left his obsession out. Will Gillain be able to accept what David has done for years? I'm a HUGE Jenika fan and as always, I love this book. I really love David and Gillian together and wish I had more. I would love to see their relationship grow and see them with a family.
There's nothing like a over the top posseive forbidden romance. Gillian is in love with her ex-stepfather but she doesn't want to rock the boat of their friendship. Little does she know he secretly stalks her and gets crazy jealous when other men touch her. David is one strong sexy crazy man who is madly in love with Gillian but doesn't want to ruin their friendship. These two have been dancing around their feelings for years and when things finally come to a head the passion is off the charts hot. Jenika Snow writes a quick hot steamy taboo story that will leave you breathless for more. If you like dark posseive alpha men then this book will be right up your alley. I loved every minute of the torture of waiting for these two to admit their feelings and once they did it was off the charts hot. Jenika Snow is a must read author for me
This was my first book by the author but it’s a short read so I devoured it in less than two hours. I love forbidden and taboo stories so by reading the blurb I wanted to read it and I really enjoyed it, the story is fast paced and while I still expect more background to the characters’ history, I still liked how things happened between them.
Gillian and David had feelings for each other for years but thanks to him being her ex-stepfather they only acted as friends. David was very protective of Gillian so he was always following her and making sure she was safe and despite David’s actions it was obvious their feelings were stronger than anything.
There were only a few steamy scenes but I felt like things happened at the right time between Gillian and David so it was nice reading how after everything, they talked things through and admitted their love after all those years.
This was previously published under the same title several years ago and the story is the same with little content being added and the story being re-edited. A forbidden age gap romance between former stepfather and stepdaughter. Gillian has been in love with David since the time he was married to her mother and the feelings were not one sided, but they never acted on them at that time. So, they stayed as friends however their feelings for each other were not going to allow them to stay in the friend zone. David has always been protective of Gillian even if she didn’t always realize it. The chemistry between them was so hot when they finally gave into it. Quick read that will come with a HEA for the couple after so long of fighting how they feel about each other.
