“The Grotto’s Secret” is a very well written and exciting debut novel for Paula Wynne. I was lucky enough to receive a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

The story blends past and present, alternating between the two. It begins in present day London, where we are introduced to Kelby Wade, one of the two stars of a popular reality tv show. During the course of interviewing prospective candidates for her show, Kelby is introduced to Dr. Roy Robson and his sister Marina. Marina has found a journal in some ruins on her family’s estate in Spain. The journal, written by Ana-Maria de Carbonella, describes various herbal remedies, including rizado which is described as a miracle working herb. Rizado is reported to significantly speed the body’s healing process as well as enhance the efficacy of other treatments.

We are then transported to fifteenth century Spain and meet the budding author, Ana-Maria. Maria’s mother is the village midwife and general healer. She is well versed in herbal treatments, and she is the person who trains Maria in their use. Maria wanted to be a writer for a very long time, but that was an occupation exclusive to men during this time in Spain. Maria, however, decides to write the herbal medicine guide. Enter the Spanish inquisition and life is about to get very exciting for Maria and her mother.

Back in the present, Kelby and Roy decide to try and find the elusive rizado. Added to this, Kelby has been receiving death threats. Her niece Annie, the only part of her dead brother she has left, is in the hospital suffering from severe asthma. The action picks up and all these story lines reach their apex almost simultaneously.

I really enjoyed this novel. I thought the pacing was excellent, starting slow as we meet the characters and slowly building to a fever pitch by the end. I was not able to put the book down for about the last 75 pages. I also thought the author did a wonderful job blending past and present and keeping the pacing constant in both time periods. The only negative I could find was that the characters were somewhat predictable. Kelby, Maria, and Roy seem to take the moral high ground. There is nothing wrong with that in my opinion, however it does lead to rather predictable actions by the characters when they are placed in various situations.

All in all I found this to be a very good book and I am glad I was able to read it. There are a few loose ends and I hope there will be a sequel. I will definitely be first in line for that. A solid 4-star read for me. If you enjoy action-adventure stories, then I think this will be right up your alley.

I was give this book as an ARC for an honest review. this book was a real good thriller. it reminded me alot of the national Treasure movies that Nicholas cage starred in and the 2 heroines in this book also remind me of Lara Croft with their fighting techniques. This is a book about a herb that cures alot of stuff, and it goes back and forth from the past to the present, but you can certainly keep track of what is going on as the book goes this way. its a suspense book-- villains chasing after the herb, a sister looking for who killed her brother, a daughter way back in the past hiding the herb. her mother being accused of witchcraft even tho she isn't one. I enjoyed this book alot. It is a long read but worth every page. I think this is her first thriller book and it didn't disappoint. I recommend it for anyone that likes thriller books. you wont be disappointed with this one. it is good enough to be a movie. has alot of suspense and thrills to it. I sure hope the author writes more like this one as I would be interested in reading more of them

The most unique thriller I've come across so far. Rich in imagery and full of twists and turns. I loved the slow, stepwise way in which the suspense developed; not giving away too many details at once yet enough to keep you on the edge and craving for more. The correlations between the past and the present were pretty cool. And the villain was the masterpiece. All in all a great read. I kept hoping that the book would never end and I could go on reading forever. I'm really looking forward to the next instalments.

70% of the way through the book and I had to give up on it. I get the fact that life isn't all roses but I had had enough of the sadistic actions of several characters. It was enough to cause me to call it quits.

2 stars may be a bit generous.

I really did not like this book; it read like a juvenile trying to write a mystery for adults. The author needs to become acquainted with the semicolon as short sentence after short sentence develop into a distracting cadence. Then there is the superfluous sentences like 'swiveling her neck she turned her head to look over her shoulder' - not the exact wording but close. The alternating the past in one chapter with the present in another was, at first, confusing and, in my opinion not well done. Then there were the nicknames.....just juvenile. The story held such promise but was so poorly handled; more time could have been spent on the only interesting aspect - Maria and her mother and what happened to them or why the villain became what he was. Instead we get a poor outline, sappy love story (wiggly eyebrows), several actions either making our common sense challenged heroine either feel nauseous or develop sweaty armpits. She's here, somehow she got there, hugs and kisses, the end. In the same category as James Rollins? I think not even close.

GREAT RESEARCH
I enjoyed this book, particularly once it for into its stride. I particularly liked the flashbacks to an earlier period and the parallel stories from the Spain of Isabella to the present day. What a shame rizado doesn’t exist! The book flowed easily although I would have liked to connect more with the heroine Kelby. I got irritated with her at one point as she pauses to read a book – OK it was a special book – but she was in fear of her life at that moment. I also got a bit confused with the various ‘baddies’ and wasn’t sure who wanted the herb for what purpose, there were so many of them. I feel the author did a lot of research to make the historical sequences authentic and for reason I will add the extra star I would have deducted from the story itself.

This book was an amazing read. Completely different story line yet very net resting. Great cast of characters kept this book right n going to the end. The author's tying together of present day actions with historical references throughout the book really held my interest. Lot of in, highly recommend it.

A mystery spanning the centuries from the Spanish inquisition and today. What is the secret of Rizado? A herb concealed from history until modern science found a way of replicating it, but in the wrong hands. One pharma company will stop at nothing to unlock the secret that hides somewhere in the hills of Andelucia, while death stalks across Europe, can nothing stop them?

Interesting Concept

I enjoyed the interplay between the past and the present. The concept of a "magic bullet" in Medicine is not new, but the way this book approaches it is new. Only 1 major faux pas: after the newest soldier comes in, complains of no food or water as it had been consumed by earlier soldiers, heroine comes back in to eat and drink....from where did it come? (Editor should have caught that.)
So why a 3, not a 5. Poor character development for the Hero & heroine for one thing. The struggle between Kelby and "Barker" that results in his death is not believable--too many strokes of the knife on Barker--in real life that would never happen. Finally, the ending is sort of "up-in-the-air": What attracts one to the other? Do they find happiness? Will Annie's illnesses all resolve with the risato? Is Kelby going to TV show or just move her base of operations to Spain? How are they going to fend off Big Pharmacy from preventing more interference in bringing the risato to market? As it is, merely increasing security at her home won't do it. What about all those other deaths--will the police get to the bottom of them? What will happen to Dr Willow? It is the incompleteness of the ending that lowered my score, for an otherwise nice story.

London, England. What are Kelby Wade’s (TV show host) next announcements?
What will happen to Teresina Piccoli (Piccoli Palazzo heiress, man-eater, she-devil) on the Devil’s Grotto (TV series)?

What was Jon Thompson (exec. Producer) talking to PC Gardenia, & PC Pike about?
What is Ana-María de Carbonela Fuente Prado (Spanish, author/writer), secret?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, & great font/writing style. A very well written historical conspiracy Thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great conspiracy thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free Prado Press; Instafreebie; Author; PDF book

A really good story

This was a very good book.. Kelby and her partner ran a reality tv show. Her partner a d her partners daughter were killed in a car crash because some thought they knew about a drug called rizado. They were determined to get the information from Kelby although she didn't have the information. Dr. Ron came to see her and told her that he believed her brother was murdered. They set off together to find rizado, a herb that could cure everything. This herb was originally found in Spain in 1492 by a young woman named Maria. The story intertwined between the past and present with an assortment of characters. Kelly is determined to find the herb as she believes it will cure her niece, Annie, who has severe asthema. This is a very good story and worth reading. It has history, murder and intrigue.

A feast for the imagination

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Descriptive writing at its best. A sweeping saga of love, deception, murder, and conspiracy. A cast of characters that one will not soon forget. Imagine a plant that could cure the world of disease! Imagine that big Pharma wants that secret buried. Others want to make as much money as possible off the plant. The question is, where is this plant?

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys conspiracy thrillers! The historical aspects are enough to make one feel there. The murder and mayhem feels real.

The Grotto's Secret by Paula Wynne is two stories that intertwine throughout the book. First, we meet TV show host Kelby Wade. She has been introduced to Dr. Roy Robson, and his sister, who believe that Kelby's brother was murdered over his knowledge of a miracle herb, which the pharmaceutical companies want their hands on. Needing this herb to save her niece, she and Dr. Roy Robson set out to find the herb.

Then we meet Ana-Maria de Carbonela. It is the year 1492. She and her mother know how to use the herb, but they are in danger from doing so.

This story was alright, though I didn't care for the going back and forth between the past and the present. I think this story would have been better if we would have learned about the past first, then introduced to the present. I also didn't care for knowing the identity of the bad guy right off the bat. It kind of put a damper on the whole mystery thing the author was going for.

The Grotto's Secret

I purchased this book because of the reviews and the story sounded interesting. What I found was a very difficult book to read. I had to read about a third of the book before the story captured my interest. The main problem was that the story had two timelines, one in the past and one in current time. I've read other books with this type of setup but this author changed the storyline every chapter and didn't make any notation of the change which made reading confusing. It also took me a long time to finish because it just didn't capture my interest.

Did not like the heroine

This was actually 2stories side by side, would have been better to do the older story first like act 1 then get to the modern day, but 1 chapter old 1 chapter modern got on my nerves. Thought the main woman Kelby was selfish boldly and generally not a nice person makes you hope that something would happen to her rather than the people around her would I read this author again probably would try another.

Awesome read!!!

I really enjoy reading historical fiction like this. Blending the past and the present together and making a story completely believable. I haven't yet read the first book of this series, but I didn't need to. I was able to understand everything happening at all times. However I do feel the need to read Marina's story now. And I look forward to reading the third book as well.

Exciting story

Five stars for a book that had me rooted to the spot! I just had to know what happened next, hence bleary eyes the following morning. I loved the comparison between the historical events involving Maria, and the current happenings with Kelby. A brilliant story about strength and overcoming adversity, mingled with hope for the future.

While the book had an interesting premise (discovering an almost magic herb and the pharmaceutical company trying to suppress it), I just didn't like the character Kelby that much. She did get better as the story progressed, but the flashbacks to Maria were more to my taste. There were plenty loose ends in both story lines, so perhaps the characters will continue to develop in the sequel.

Sequel

I so enjoyed the story and the characters, I hope there will be a sequel with Kelbe, Rob and Annie. The suspense was wonderful and I did lose sleep. I had to force myself to turn off my light and get to sleep. But I looked forward to the next day when I could continue. Great writing Paula!

This book gripped me from the very beginning and it was hard to put down. Lots of breath-holding suspense, mystery, danger, betrayal and conspiracy made this an exciting story. I liked the way the author blended past and present together so smoothly. I look forward to reading the next book.

Fascinating read! Very well written book that doesn't leave you hanging at the end. Read about the secret, both past and present, and follow the trail around to the present day. You'll experience a range of emotions from anger, fear and sadness throughout the entire book. Highly recommend this book!

A well written mystery story with two storylines. One set in 1492 and the other in modern times. Though the jumps between time periods can be a bit jarring I do understand why it was written this way.

With interesting and a strong female characters in both timelines it is worth completing, but be warned that it some scenes may be too graphic for some readers.

Mixing fiction, romance, history, and murder makes this a spellbinding read. I could not put it down. Anyone who likes history will enjoy the flash backs to the Spanish inquisition

Ok, but not wonderful

Good idea for a story, good back and forth between time periods, but extremely predictable, and author repeats some phrases over and over again. Not too bad for a first novel, but awful if more than a third novel.

I wanted to love this book, I really did... but I didn't.
For me, the story took far too long to get going, the character interactions were forced and unnatural, the chapters were too short to build any real tension...
Let's leave it here: I was disappointed with this book.

This is an intriguing novel, that reminds me somewhat of James Rollins. It goes back and forth between the past and present, but does a wonderful job of connecting the two times. Just for reference, this novel is available through kindle unlimited, but the 2nd one is not.
