Jay Norry, aka J.K. Norry, is the multi-genre author of several books, many blog posts, and a few short stories.

He wrote his first book in his early twenties. After sitting on the manuscript for almost ten years, Stumbling Backasswards Into the Light was finally published via a small press in January 2012. Jay wrote his next book shortly after, and published Demons & Angels through his own company (Sudden Insight Publishing) in December 2014.

Since then he's written a lot of books. And he doesn't seem to be able to stop.

It's not a bad problem to have.

Jay lives in the hottest part of Northern California with his wife Dawn and their furry little princess Ximena. While he spends most of his hours on the side porch writing books, he also enjoys ticking items off his unending to-do list, drinking good scotch, and dreaming up future home projects.

A joyous little romp with a refreshing new take on zombies. These ones think, they talk, they plot, and boy...can they move! The infection is more of a virus that morally corrupts any who come in contact with it. It was a fast read for those looking for a quick zombie fix. Simply wonderful.

Full disclosure: I received a copy of this work for free, not for the purposes of a review, but because I am one of the many real world folks the author 'borrowed' for his book universe. (For further explanation, see the foreword acknowledgements in the story itself)

The decision to review was based on my own, unbiased enjoyment of the story.

I confess: I'm not a fan of the zombie apocalypse genre. So much so that I parodied the genre myself. However, after reading Norry's Stumbling Backasswards Into the Light, I was pretty sure this wasn't going to be the typical gore-fest and I was pleased to see my assumptions were right. Right from the get go, we learn that zombies aren't so far removed from humans and the monsters have a scientific explanation that is rooted in our own genetic makeup.

Each chapter begins by foreshadowing future events and introducing characters who will come into play later, but then shifts back to the main story arc that follows a college professor, his daughter, and some of his students as they go off to study a newly opened chamber in the great pyramid and inadvertently set off the end of the world.

That there is a lesson here comes as no surprise. Humans can only do so much to the earth before she strikes back and boy, does she strike back. These are not mindless brain eaters, well, at least not all. These zombies have an agenda, rational thought, and most intriguing to me, the ability to reflect and have personal growth. Yes, that's right, a zombie who owns up to the fact that maybe they weren't always the person they thought they were being.

This is a fantastic set-up and I'm genuinely curious to see what the post apocalypse world bring and admittedly, I can't wait to see what role Norry's version of me plays in all of this. Hopefully, she's stronger than real world me, who will probably be a gibbering mess the minute her WiFi cuts out.

Zombie Zero, by J. R. Norry is a zombie adventure story, on the surface. And that's okay. Read it for that and have fun as the zombies take over the world. But as I read, I was drawn to what I thought to be an underlying theme, how humans have destroyed the planet and how only with disaster, can the earth be saved. Mr. Norry sets the story in motion with how we are polluting, destroying the basic underpinnings of our environment, how greed prevents society from rebounding. He presents a picture of a world where man survives apocalypse and following the evolution of the species, time and time again, repeats the causes of destruction. Only a demon or god found hidden in the Great Pyramid is capable of saving the world by destroying it. He calls her Maya, but could she be Noah? Or an alien from another universe or dimension? If you like the gore of zombie stories, it's in there. But the brilliance of the storyteller is that he offers a thoughtful narrative of what we are doing to ourselves. Is it possible that the end times consists of monsters devouring humans and then themselves and assuring that our civilization disappears with no trace, other than a few survivors to be fruitful and multiply, replenish the earth and subdue it? And disappear again. Not a wonderful thought, but a great story. READ THIS BOOK.

The book starts with a massive DNA related info dump from the scientist to explain the zombies that have been created in his lab. A fair amount of it went over my head and it could've been summed up quite simply in one paragraph instead of the attempt to dazzle the hapless reader with science they probably won't understand.

Chapter two introduces a group of obnoxious sex obsessed students that you just want to get eaten and couldn't care less about. That is followed by two academics talking about colonising Mars and how gender equality book writing is pointless by a white male and talking inane rubbish that put me to sleep. I'm not sure WTF this book is meant to be about other than as a platform for obnoxious characters to spout off about super smart topics that bore me to death.

Unleash the zombies and kill them all already. Pity I won't still be reading this to find out if everyone was chewed. I'm done with this.

This isn't just another zombie book, it's so much more, as Mother Earth retaliates, once again, to the treatment dealt to her by the human race with a constant cycle of apocalyptic events that wipes out the majority of humans.
The main zombies are intelligent and have character. They're not the 'shuffling brain-eaters' that we are accustomed to.

I enjoyed reading Zombie Zero: The First Zombie which deals with the downfall of humanity, and went straight on to read Zombie Zero: The Last Zombie

A fun bonus for me in this book is that the author has used a number of real people from the indie community as characters, and as a reader of indie books I enjoyed coming across names I recognise.
