Target: Timberline #4

In the Arms of the Enemy

Rate this book
As a lawman, he knew she had secrets. Ones that could bust his case wide open.

Tasked with finding a mysterious murder suspect, DEA agent Cole Pierson was in Timberline on a mission. He didn't need distractions like the lovely Caroline Johnson. Though he didn't think she could be his suspect, she was clearly hiding something and her safety became Cole's top priority.

She'd awoken next to a dead man, her memory gone. When "Caroline" had come to the small town looking for answers, she hadn't counted on meeting Cole. He offered the protection she so desperately needed. But if he found out she'd been lying, that he'd become involved with a suspect, it would mean the end to any future—or happiness—she had imagined.

Caroline Johnson wakes up in a motel room next to a dead guy, with no memory of who she is or how she got there! She finds a note with "Timberline" written on it, so she heads there in the hope it might provide her with some answers. Cole Pierson is a DEA agent who follows the clues from the scene of the crime to Timberline as well. When he meets Caroline, he isn't sure about the story she's giving him. As for Caroline, she doesn't know if he's an undercover cop, or a drug dealer, like the dead guy! Could any of this have links to a 25-year-old kidnapping of three children?

It took me a while to realise this was the concluding chapter in a mini-series, and I had read the previous one, Army Ranger Redemption. I enjoyed that one, but was annoyed at all the plot strands left dangling. Thankfully, because this is the last book in the series, all of those strands get resolved! This story had a good mystery at its core, and the pace was fast. But I couldn't entirely get on side with Caroline, because it seemed all of her actions were motivated by self-interest, rather than what was best. No, it's not great to be arrested, but she really should have gone straight to the police! I couldn't help but think a lot of this mess could have been avoided if she'd done that! Also, the climax lacks punch. It's very rushed.

This is the last book in the Timberline series and they do not have to be read in order. As I read each book I could not wait to read the next one. I had to hunt around and find all four of them. This was a series that you could not help but get involved in and have to read them all. Now that I am finished I am a little disappointed that there isn't anymore to go back to and read.

Check out the book you will be glad that you did.

I liked this romantic suspense that got off to an exciting start with an interesting plot but the heroine kept her secrets from the hero for too long. The story did have some decent intrigue and the conclusion to the series was pretty good. She wakes up with amnesia next to a dead guy so she calls herself Caroline and goes into hiding then runs into Cole who turns out to be a DEA agent.

In the Arms if the Enemy
Carol Ericsson

Dead bodies, amnesia, tall, dark and handsome DEA Agent, and a traumatized heroine are all the ingredients for an intense suspenseful story. A can’t put it down until the end read that keeps you up late into the night.
Will ‘Caroline’ and Cole be able to find the answers to why someone wants her dead before the unseen enemy is successful? A must read.

Amnesia story, gradual unfolding of heroine's background is intriguing and nicely counterpointed with the escalating danger. Good cat-and-mouse game between main characters but the ultimate solution was awkward for me.

I was given this book for an honest review.

This is the last book in the Target: Timberline series and it was everything I wanted it to be and more. Carol Ericson created a couple of wonderful characters for this portion of the series: Caroline Johnson, an amnesiac, and Cole Pierson, the DEA agent.

Caroline wakes up in a seedy motel with a dead man and no memory. She invents ‘Caroline’ on her way to Timberline, the only clue she has. She goes there with stolen money and the hopes of finding out who she is and why she was with the dead man. Linda Gunderson, a local in Timberline, takes Caroline in and vows to protect her.

Cole Pierson had been tracking Johnny Diamonds for a long time. He gets the tip that Diamonds is dead and he goes to investigate. He knows a woman was with him and she has taken off on the run with some of the drug money Diamonds had. His only clue as to why Diamonds was in the area is a GPS destination of Timberline. He believes he will find his answers there.

Caroline and Cole circle one another warily for much of the book, both drawn to the other. Cole can tell Caroline has secrets and she can tell he is there for reasons other than he has given. Overshadowing all of Caroline’s problems is the 25 year mystery behind the Timberline Trio.

In the Arms of the Enemy can be read as a stand-alone book, but for anyone who has followed the series, you will not be disappointed in the conclusion of the mystery that was the thread that tied all the books together.

I would heartily recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast paced mystery with plenty of twists and turns throughout.

Author Carol Ericson brings her exciting “Target: Timberline” series to a thrilling conclusion with Book 4, “In the Arms of the Enemy”. DEA agent Cole Pierson is in Timberline, Washington tracking a mystery woman who is connected to the death of the drug dealer who had been at the center of his long-term case. Frustrated by losing the subject of his investigation before all the biggest of the bad guys could be brought down, Cole is searching for any link to information that will tell him what he needs to know. Meeting Caroline Johnson is an unexpected, unwanted distraction. There’s something elusive about her, and Cole has serious trust issues when it comes to women. Caroline is beautiful and vulnerable, and he can’t help but being attracted to her. On the run from an encounter with a dead man which left her hurt and suffering from amnesia, Caroline had one clue of her own to follow—in her pocket she had found a note bearing the words “Timberline, WA”. Cole is handsome, charming, and definitely a “protector”, but when she finds out he is actually a lawman, Caroline knows the woman whom he is tracking is her, and she fears what will happen when he discovers her connection to the dead drug dealer. She desperately wants to regain her memory and her identity, but will reality come with a horrible cost? The feelings and attraction between Caroline and Cole are very real, but are they strong enough to stand up to the harsh light of all truths revealed? “Target: Timberline” is recommended reading for lovers of terrific romantic suspense with appealing characters and adventure-filled mystery.

I've always enjoyed amnesia stories and this is a good one! Imagine waking up in a hotel room and the person next to you is dead! This is what happens to "Caroline Johnson"! Of course it isn't her real name but she can't remember what it is so that's what she chooses as her name. She looks around and finds a bucket load of drugs and cash, not to mention when you goes outside, the rental car this dead guy had, has a dead woman in the trunk!!! She knows she has to get out of there fast - but where??? She has a slip of paper in her pocket with a city on it so she heads there. I just can't imagine what I would do in those circumstances! Even when she gets to town, things continue to be crazy & scary! The guy who starts to take interest in her turns out to be a DEA agent - Cole Pierson. Cole knows she has secrets but what are they? Do they pertain to the drug case he's working on? What about the kidnapping case that's haunted this town for 25 years? There's lots of action and mystery and suspense in this book as it wraps up the mystery of the Timberline series. I really enjoyed the outcome and way everything turned out!
