Are you someone with many talents and interests? Do you love discovery and variety? Do you enjoy solving problems? And do you get bored - even feel trapped - at a job where there’s no more to learn? If you answered yes, finding the right career has been discouraging. Let’s change that. I think I know you. In fact, I’m one of you. I call us ‘Scanners.’ Some people call us Polymaths or Renaissance people, or TMA (Too Many Aptitudes) or just multi-talented. I wrote a book about us called Refuse to Choose. It’s been called "The owner’s manual for creative thinkers.” It’s a good book, full of career suggestions for every different type of Scanner I could find. But I knew there were even more great jobs out there in the big world so I asked all the Scanners I know, “What was the best job you ever had?” The response was fabulous! They’re still coming in! I hope they never stop! And the answers were so unexpected. They’ll get your thinking out of a rut right away. Here’s the first group of my favorite answers. They’ll give you fresh, unexpected ideas. If you need a bit of inspiration to find work that will be a joy for you, this is a great place to start!
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
Barbara Sher was a speaker, career/lifestyle coach, and best-selling author of seven books on goal achievement. Her books have sold millions of copies and been translated into many languages. She had appeared on Oprah, The Today Show, 60 Minutes, CNN, and Good Morning America and her public television specials aired regularly in the United States. Sher lectured at universities, Fortune 100 companies and professional conferences all over the world. Sher's latest book, Refuse to Choose (Rodale 2006) is a step-by-step program designed for "scanners", people with many interests who are unable to decide on a single direction for their lives.
There are a lot of good ideas here. There are links to more info one each job description, and for every one of them, there is a person who explains how it works for multi talented people. Check out her other books and you tube videos, too! Excellent!
I read her book Refuse to Choose and would give it 6 out of 5 stars but this book I think fell short. There was no mention of her ticket to ride careers for instance.
If you’re a fan of Barbara Sher’s books, you’ll understand the context of this list of all different careers for those of us with a multitude of interests. :)
