England, 1805
Amidst the backdrop of the sweeping Lincolnshire countryside, Phoebe Densford, the eldest daughter of a great manor family, faces a heart-wrenching choice. After her mother’s death, she discovers her father has lost not only her dowry but those of her three sisters. Wanting to fulfill her mother’s request to care for her siblings, Phoebe considers marriage to her wealthy neighbor. But for years, she has secretly loved the ineligible David Camburn.
A humble tutor employed by the well-to-do Densford family, David Camburn intends to open a boys’ school and attain his long craved independence. The father of the Densford family, if offended, has the power to destroy David’s reputation and dream. Pursuing Phoebe would certainly anger the Densford father.
David prepares to depart to start his school, but his heart warms toward the eldest Densford daughter. He must decide if he will risk losing a secure future to try for her hand. Meanwhile, Phoebe is torn between two loves—of a man and of family.
Starting with the cover, I wasn't crazy about this book. I mean, come on, it doesn't look Regency, it looks like some woman playing dress-up. The story line did have potential, I just didn't love the way it was written. It's an okay book, but that's all-- just okay.
Sorry to say this book was not for me. I didn't feel any connection to the characters and the story just wasn't interesting to me. I can't even pinpoint why exactly....
A fine Delightful read. I am wholly appreciative of this kind of Romance because the author stayed True to the genre and the Timeline. Staying faithful to the aforementioned category makes this work more authentic and anchored to the chosen setting. The author does not insult the reader by injecting present day words like the killjoy "okay" and present day phrases used in present day context like "from here on out" to a British setting during the Regency period. So, Thank You dear author for respecting the period and category in which your work is set on.
A clean romance, less predictable than I thought it would be and thus a pleasant surprise. Quick read. It seemed the main characters let themselves get pushed around by the opinions of others too much at first.
This was a good story although it was an expected ending. I enjoyed it but could put it down and pick back up easily. Sometimes a book that can be put down is a good thing.
