Hidden in the dark corners of our reality are the passages to spaces beyond. It is there that unfortunate souls come face to face with the horrors that move silently about us in everyday life. Take a breath, take a chance, and turn the page. David Dunwoody, the author of the novel Empire, presents strange and chilling tales in which there is no escape to be found - only confrontation with the dark entities of the author's imagination. Giant graveyard ghouls, rebellious demons chained eternally in Hell, ravenous shape-shifters on a lost island, and the specter of Death himself all await within the confines of this book to collect your soul.
"Within the pages of Dark Entities you'll find a mix of artistic sensibility, extreme characters and gruesome horror - crafted with both skill and aptitude. The sentence structure is lean; the vivid imagery portrayed is not unlike the darkest work from Hieronymus Bosch. Look out world, David Dunwoody has arrived." - James Roy Daley, Author of The Dead Parade
"It's easy to support the work of a writer you respect. But Dave Dunwoody's stories have turned me into a FAN." - Gregory Hall, ChoateRoad.com
"Has the ability to resonate in your mind...A frightening experience." - Dr. Pus, "Library of the Living Dead" Podcast

Though all the stories in this 112 page collection have clearly been written by an author with a superb mastery of the technical side of the art, there is so much variation between the good and the not-so-good entries in Dark Entities that the best I can muster is a middling score for it.

Opening with IN THE CLAY, Dunwoody quickly establishes he is as capable of pulling off a last paragraph twist as anyone, before he includes a story, BROWNLEE'S BLUE FLAME, that appears to require a solid knowledge of his other writings to appreciate (and hence did little for me). THE AMBROSIA SUPPER CLUB rights the listing ship, with an entertainingly strange tale about a group of guests who will not take no for an answer at an exclusive restaurant. This is up there with the best of the stories in Dark Entities, and at this point, I was hopeful this could be one of the better short story collections I'd read this year.

Unfortunately MINOTAUR achieves little in its limited word count, A CARRION TO WOUNDED SOULS is flat out confusing, and THE ABBOT AND THE DRAGON speeds way too fast through what might have been an intriguing apocalyptic novella or even novel-length work. NEW EYES is a decent variation on a theme that has been hit upon many times, and SUNSET eventually gets to an interesting place, but takes a lot of valuable pages to do so.

More positively, the collection ends on a high with THE RUN, with an intriguing version of an apocalyptic event. This one propped up my overall rating by half a star, as I was that impressed with the way Dunwoody managed to simultaneously world and character build within a few short pages.

Overall then, Dark Entities is a mixed collection of stories running the gamut from horror to dark fantasy. Mileage is likely to vary, but if you are looking for a collection that errs on the side of darkness, you could do far worse.

David Dunwoody has definitely joined the ranks of my favorite authors with this terrifying foray into short fiction. Each tale is an intricately woven tale of horror that draws you in and keeps you tangled up until the very last sentence of the book. I tried not to consume the entire book in one sitting, but it was hard.

Dunwoody is definitely creating a new mythos with his reaper and his tales of hell and its minions. I hope he continues to turn out stories from these worlds, because they are mesmerizing.

This is a great companion to his "Unbound & Other Tales" short story collection.

I highly recommend both books.
