I wasn’t sure what to expect because I haven’t read many paranormal books and certainly haven’t read a story including angels and demons with this plot, so it was a fun read and different from what I’m used to.
I was pulled into the story right away. Jasmine is a 16-year-old teenager dealing with a mother who simply doesn’t care about her. An unforeseen wicked event causes an accident with her father and because her mother doesn’t want her, she’s relocated with her grandparents. Ma and Pa love her so much and all seems to be going well with Jasmine as she lives a fairly normal life with her boyfriend Beau, until demons appear and hunt her down. They’ve been released and plan to take over all mankind. Jasmine doesn’t know it yet, but she’s going to have to figure out how to control her powers while she trains to defend against the evil demons.
I really liked the characters in the book. Jasmine, Beau, and Amon were my favorites. Jasmine is very strong and confident and the majority if the time she wasn’t afraid despite all the evil events unfolding around her. At times I didn’t like the way Jasmine treated Beau as their relationship started to change due to Amon’s introduction, but everything came together eventually. It wasn’t a predictable read! It was difficult to tell what decisions the characters would make and there were times I couldn’t differentiate between friends and foes as more characters are introduced. I don’t want to include a bunch of spoilers, so for the most part, I enjoyed the book. I felt like there were some slow parts with mainly the beginning and the ending remaining my favorites. The ending was a complete total shocker.
I love the way Cassandra Fear Writes. I found it very easy to read from cover to cover. I would’ve liked a tad more romance and maybe faster pacing, but understand this is YA. I’m looking forward to the next book!
Jasmine clearly wasn’t born under a lucky star, but she could conjure blue flames from her hands and because of that, her sixteenth birthday will forever go down as one of the most painful days of her life. The day she lost her father to death, was the day she lost her mother to an emotional death, it was also the day the demons came for her, all because of the blue flames.
Clueless to their origin, she kept her “gifts” secret in her new life with her grandparents, far from the mother who didn’t want her, while trying to live a normal teen’s life, with normal teen problems. That was soon to change on her eighteenth birthday when the gates of Hell unleashed a legion of demons to hunt her down, all because one monster from the underworld wanted her as his evil minion.
Demons weren’t the only creatures to leave Hell, a fallen angel, desperate to regain God’s good graces will fight to keep Jasmine safe. Amon is a force to be reckoned with, powerful, ancient and filled with attitude and he is falling for Jasmine, the clueless pawn in another battle between good and evil. What is Jasmine? Clearly not entirely human, clearly unprepared for what Fate has decreed for her and clearly caught in a romantic triangle between the human boy who would do anything for her and this mysterious fallen angel. The mortal world is on the brink of destruction and devastation as the demons gain strength with each kill ad it is up to a ragtag group of unlikely heroes to save the world from torment.
Heroes will die, friends will betray, and hearts will break in Cassandra Fear’s Above the Flames as the battle to possess the very soul of Earth is fought. Cassandra Fear has packed her world building, her action and an amazing plot into book one of what looks to be a fantastic new series. The angst takes a back seat to the bravery and determination of one girl who finally learns why she is different and attempts to overcome the pain of loss while learning the power she possesses and why. Fascinating from start to finish, a touch of romance, a lot of demons and someone will have Hell to pay, if Jasmine has anything to say about it. Seriously, have you ever been on the receiving end of a strong willed teen?

My Rating: 4.5 Stars Series: The Flame Publisher: Limitless Publishing LLC (April 19, 2016) Publication Date: April 19, 2016 Genre: YA Urban Paranormal Print Length: 309 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble For Reviews & More: http://tometender.blogspot.com
Well written and easy to read, this was my second fantasy book in two weeks! I've learned much about demons, angels, and humans in a thrilling dystopian plot.
Loved the characters (strong female protagonist) and the dialog (a bit worn and cute at times). As for the genre, I would also classify it as Romance, not a typical choice for me :).
I really enjoyed Above the Flames! I love stories about angels and demons, so I really liked that whole aspect of the book. The demons have won the war in Heaven, and have escaped from Hell, and are now killing humans to take over the world. I enjoyed all the action in Above the Flames, but I do feel like the same thing kept happening over and over. Good guys would be found by some demons, there would be some fighting, but both would end up getting free, so nothing really came of it, and this happens a few times, so I was ready for the story to progress a little faster than it did. There are mainly 3 POV's in this book, Jasmine (lead female), Amon (lead male), and Bael (Head Demon). I liked that we get a glimpse into the demons side of things, and I getting the female and male perspective is great too. I think I would have liked Above the Flames to be a little bit more serious, everything and everyone was sort of comical, but there are some serious things going on, and I felt I would've preferred a bit more heart and soul to the story. Humor is good, but a little less would have been better; especially from the demons.
Jasmine is a human, who has a special power, and when she was 16, her father was killed trying to protect her from a demon, who was suppose to bring Jasmine back to Hell. Jasmine escapes, and moves in with her grandparents because her mom is horrible to Jasmine. The story jumps ahead 2 years, and Jasmine has kept a tight lock on her powers because she is afraid of what they might do. I didn't really connect with Jasmine, she kind of got on my nerves. She did a lot of things without thinking them through, so she gets into problems all the time, and I found her a bit whiny and rude at times. I also don't like how she acts with the Amon and Beau situation, Beau is Jasmine's boyfriend, but Jasmine also has an attraction towards Amon. I actually don't mind love triangles, but I don't like that whole situation in this book, it was one of the low points for me, I thought it could've been handled differently by the author, and because of that situation, I felt any romance was seriously lacking. The chemistry needed some pumping up! I still was rooting for Jasmine though, and I'm hoping it's the type of situation where she will grow as the series progresses. Jasmine meets up with Amon when she and Beau rescue him and his other fallen angel friends from some demons. I didn't like how the fallen angels act, everyone in this books acts really immaturely, but I expect more out of the angels since they've been around for a lot longer, but they act like teenagers too; especially Lamia, I couldn't stand her. So, Jasmine and Amon and their groups decide to ban together to help save the world from demons.
The book does end without much resolution, which I'm not mad at because I was entertained through the whole story. I'm looking forward to the next book!

Such a fan-freaking-tastic read !!
This was one of the most funniest paranormal books I have ever read - or at least read so far. It doesn't compare to anything at all. It is very unique and it draws you in from the very first page. To be honest, I couldn't turn off my kindle not even for a second because I wanted so much to know what was about to happen next in the book.
Above the flames is a very light fantasy read - even though, from the half of it and until the end, you'll have to pray for not getting nightmares or anything - that depicts the eternal fight between good and evil with some very funny characters and lines. The characters are well developed, strongly willed and ready to stand up and fight for saving the Earth from evil.
Since I brought it up, I must admit that, I mostly love the main heroine with whom the book starts, that is Jasmine - or Jazzy, how she's being referred to by her friends. From the first page she stands up to protect her parents from the attack of one of Lucifer's minions - Bael. She is one of the bravest and determined female characters I've met in this book. From the moment her Mom learns the truth about what she really is and why her husband/dad was murdered, Jazzy is forced to leave the house she's grown up in and move in with her grandparents - Ma and Pa - and start over in another city.
Fallen Angels...Ahh and here's one that stood up in my eyes and gave me ideas from the moment he came into focus. Amon, one of the four fallen angels, that's been named to train the Angel Blessed, not that he''s already a fallen one but he is about to fall for Jasmine, too.
While planning their strategy to save the world, Lucifer's minions, atop with Bael, massacre a whole town in order to free their boss. In the process, Jazzy, looses her beloved grandparents and makes a promise to destroy each and every demon, but first she has to get to safety.
Who would've guessed that some demons can be either so freaking stupid or so amazingly soft. If you read the book you'll see what I'm talking about here.
When's the sequel coming out ? I want it now !!! I need to know how this ends. I have so many questions that need to be answered !!!!
Poor Jasmine is having the worst 16th birthday ever. Her dad dies, her mother disowns her, she discovers she has powers and a demon tries to take her. She escapes and moves to Idaho. But on her 18th birthday, an army of demons descend on Earth. Suddenly Jasmine needs to decide whether to embrace her powers and destroy evil or join them.
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this paranormal romance story because of all that Jasmine goes through but the author does a good job balancing the good with the bad. I connected with Jasmine immediately and simply fell into the story. A little slow in places but overall a superb story.
I received a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest Review Via Lovers of the Paranormal book group on goodreads.
There is a war brewing between angels and demons, and the angel blessed must help the angels fight back. If you are looking for an action packed book with angels, demons, and humans with angel powers than this book is for you. However due to extreme violence I would recommend this book to more mature readers.
I really enjoyed this book. From page one I was yanked into one heck of a story. This story never lost my attention until my eyes finally fell closed because of sleep deprivation; I would have fought to read more and keep my eyes open had my boyfriend not pestered me to come to bed. I did dream about the book, and woke up the next day after falling asleep at 6 am just trying to finish the last 40 pages; I picked up the book excited to finish the book, and I can't wait for book 2.
I am very happy to come across this book, because it was very unpredictable, and that made it more exciting, and had me flip page after page just wanting more. This book had great character and world building. I was able to attach myself to the characters and fall into the book feeling everything they felt. I felt like I was a part of the book. When there was fighting against demons I felt I was one of them fighting back with them. It is safe to say this book was pretty amazing.

So I swore when writing book reviews to never give spoilers... this is the second time that I have hated myself for making that rule.
Above the flame, is the first fantasy novel of the series, with three out of this world main characters that will leave you praying for pleasant dreams! The entire time I was biting my nails and flicking to the next page trying to read as much as I could as fast as I could!
The lightheartedness of the fantasy and intensity when it comes to the emotions made this my favorite book to read this year! I am beyond excited that the next book will be coming out later this year (April 18th) and will continue to wait with inoculation on how she can go from here!
Cassandra has made it to my authors must watch for list and I am so glad that I got the opportunity to read this impeccable book!
A fun paranormal romance where a feisty heroine and her long-suffering boyfriend, together with a band of fallen angels, join forces to stop evil demons from Hell taking over the earth.
It's 3 in the morning and I can't sleep because I want to read more.. First of all I would like to thank the author for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! This book is fan-freaking-tastic! I am going to review it by comparing the positives and negatives.. Why do I love this book? ♡ Jasmine: She was great! At first I expected her to be just like any other female protagonist.. putting others before her but no! She isn't one of them. She's strong, caring, emotional, reckless and impulsive but most importantly.. she was real. It was a fresh feeling reading about such a character. Did I mention she's strong? Not just her powers.. but mentally? Respect! This girl here is a fighter! I loved how she stayed strong when you know who did you know what to her! ( sorry! trying to be spoiler free here) ♡ Beau: Can I get a friend like Beau please? He is just.. I love what he and Jasmine have and it was really nice to see them having each others backs. But what happened when there were just about 20 pages left.. Why did you do that Cassandra? But you did good. The way you ended it all was good. ♡The fallen Angels: They are freaking cool. Amon and Lam and Azzy are nice and all but Caim takes the cake. I liked him better than the others. I get it that Amon was the main guy but can we get more Caim please? ♡Bael: Call me crazy, call me psychotic but I really loved he way his character was written. He was exactly what a demon should be like. He kinda reminded me of Azazel from Supernatural though. And since we are on that topic that.. Let me put it out there that the main reason I fell in love with this book instantly was because it felt like I was watching a crossover episode between "Supernatural" and "The messengers". And to me, that's heaven right there. and my next favorite from the book is.. ♡Gemma:She was straight up adorable. She was sweet, funny and caring and all but she wasn't written in a way where we would think less of her. She was strong and honestly? pretty sure all of the others would've been dead of it wasn't for her and Azzy. And now for the best.. ♡♡♡ Cole: If the hearts didn't give it away.. I love love love Cole. Right from the moment he entered the story! I don't know why but I was pretty sure I'd and up loving him and that's exactly what happened. Before I start writing pages about him.. Why I did not like the book? There aren't many drawbacks to this book but I do have a couple of complaints. ¤ Jasmine: She could've been a little less bitch-y if you ask me. Although she wasn't too bad.. She was kinda mean at times. But hey ! nobody's perfect and I get it. ¤ Cole: No! I don't have a problem with him. The problem that I have is that there wasn't enough Cole in the book. I need me some Cole. ¤ The biggest problem that I had with this book? Why did it have to end???? Like why? Give me more!!!!!! It was such a good book and was fast paced and was so full of action with no dull moments. I didn't even realize when I got to the end and I was freaking out when I realized there were only 30 more pages left!
On the whole.. I absolutely love this book and I can't wait to get my hand in the others. And if any fan of supernatural paranormal stuff is reading this.. you will love it! Give it a try!!
Jasmine’s life is turned upside down on her 16th birthday when her father is killed by a demon and her mother abandons her emotionally and all because of her ability to conjure blue flames.
Two years later, Jasmine has a steady boyfriend and lives with her grandparents in their small, rural town. Everything is going well, until the demons are freed from Hell, along with several fallen angels who she teams up with in an effort to keep the world from being destroyed.
That’s the exciting premise of Cassandra Fear’s premiere novel, Above the Flames, and boy does it deliver.
One of my favorite aspects of this novel was all of the abilities. Jasmine’s in particular I thought was well done and I always enjoyed reading how she dealt with it. Her struggle to control and contain it added some depth to Jasmine’s character.
I also found Amon to be a particularly interesting character. For a fallen angel who’s been locked up in Hell for so long, you’d expect him to very broody and dark, but surprisingly, he’s not. He quickly became one of my favorites.
Bael, the main villain of the book, was great. I loved how much he enjoyed being evil and took pleasure in it. He knows what he is and has no problem with it. In fact, he enjoys it, and it made him fun to read.
Overall, I think this is an excellent first novel and I look forward to reading more from the author. There’s plenty of action, a bit of romance, and enough humor to keep readers, especially teens who enjoy YA paranormal novels, to keep them turning the pages and devouring this story.
Very powerful book. Moving at times. I found love, betrayal, jealousy, magic, angels, demons, and all sorts of battles with good vs evil going on in these pages. At times I had to look back to see who was who, because some names were similar, but wow. I was up until 5am finishing this one from 44% to the end. I just couldn't put it away until I knew what happened. Holy Buckets was it earth-shattering. I loved many of the characters, especially the main two. Jazzy was kick-butt and Amon was a fallen angel worth swooning over. He was sad chivalry was dead, according to her, so he was determined to bring it back. I am pumped over reading more...please tell me there is more...
Above The Flames has a great heroine who's smart, snarky, and brave. If you're looking for a strong but feminine MC, you'll love Jasmine! You'll also swoon over fallen angel Amon. Highly recommend and can't wait for Book 2!
WOW... just.. WOW!! This book was awesome!! This is so my type of read! It kept me on edge.. cried like a baby..lol I smiled.. I want me some of Amon. :P Thanks for writing! <3
*** I rate books by enjoyment, not quality of writing. ***
This novel is evidently meant to be the first book in a trilogy.
Even though modern day horror is not a genre I would ask to read, I found this book a real page turner. The plotting is excellent, and I found it difficult to set down.
It begins when the heroine, Jasmine, also known as “Jazzy,” witnesses her father being killed by a demon. The demon doesn’t want to kill her but wants her to come with him. She kills the demon with a power she didn’t know, or appreciate, until now. With her father dead, and her mother not wanting her, she moves in with her grandparents in a different town.
Years later, a fallen angel, Amon, escapes from Hell. Jazzy has a boyfriend, Beau. He takes her on a picnic when strange creatures, demons, attack her town and kill many people, including her grandparents. Beau protects her from the demons. Then, they meet several fallen angels, including Amon with whom she falls for, even though he treats her rough at times, and makes Beau jealous.
Through the next few chapters, Amon and the fallen angles try to protect Jazzy and Beau, as Amon helps Jazzy develop her power, power that can kill demons, except for one demon, Bael, who Jasmine can’t kill, yet, and wants to capture her and somehow steal her power to help him conquer the earth and turn it into a hell. He almost succeeds but she is rescued by Amon in a fight where her best friend, Beau, is killed.
I won’t tell the ending, but I was disappointed as the story ends abruptly, leaving many unsolved issues. Probably the author meant to leave some loose end to be brought up in volumes 2 and 3, but I’ve been told by many masters of novel writing, including Dean Koontz, that even if the book is part of a trilogy each book must end as if it were a standalone novel.
I was also very disappointed in the author’s poor writing style. She used many clichés and left a lot of issues unsolved. If I am to give this novel a 1- to 5- star recommendation, because of the weak ending and poor writing style, I can’t honestly give it more than 3.5.
Jasmine is just your typical teenager, who just so happens to be able to shoot out blue flames from her hands at will. When a demon from Hell emerges to Earth on her sixteenth birthday, tries to kidnap her, and kills her father, she goes to live with her grandparents and spends two years in relative bliss. Then all Hell breaks loose (literally) and she becomes embroiled in the fight between good and evil while keeping her feelings for her fallen-angel-turned-rescuer Amon in check.
My main problems with this novel are twofold.
1) I would have liked to see more of Jasmine's life before the demon came and attacked her. After she goes to live with her grandparents, she describes it as "her first real family," but also says that she and her dad were as close as can be. I feel like I maybe just needed to get an idea of what her life was like when she was living with her parents in order to understand how happy she was living with her grandparents. 2) On some occasions, Jasmine didn't read like a real teenager. She was one-dimensional for the most part, and kind of annoying. And for the first ten or so chapters, her dialogue felt way too mature for a girl her age, and her catchphrase, "Fan-fricking-tastic" isn't something that teens even say; it's just annoying. EDIT: The version I read was an ARC, and at the time of writing this review, I didn’t know that ARCs tend to not have been proofread. Neither did the publisher give warning when I received it that it was an unedited ARC. I am redacting my comments about it needing proofreading because I have since looked at the finalized version and can no longer see any of the typos I identified on first read through. This is a solid four star book with my only real complaint being Jasmine not fleshed out enough and being annoying.
This is a fast paced action book that never had a dull moment. Quite a unique angel too, I don’t think I’ve read anything like it.
So even though I like the plot and all the supernatural quality that it has I couldn’t give five stars because of the lack of character development and world building. I feel like I didn’t get to know the characters as I would have liked to. I was just thrown right in was basically like “What the heck?” I mean, I like a slow progression of things and this book doesn’t have that. I also would have like to have more background and world building.
But it is a great story despite the characters, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a supernatural read!
*I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review*
So, I don’t do Read2Reviews often, only if a book really sparks my interest. When I looked through the available R2R books that were available at the moment, I stumbled on “Above the Flames” and I’m really glad that I got the chance to review it, so I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity. Even though I had a busy week, I read this book within a few days and I really enjoyed it. There was always something going on, be it from the characters’ private life or because of their mission. The longer I read, the more I started to like the characters. At first, I didn’t care much for Jasmine, but the author let the reader understand why the characters acted the way they did and provided a nice background story to the main characters. The ending especially moved me and I’m looking forward to the sequel. I received this book at the Goodreads Lovers of Paranormal group for free in exchange for a fair and honest review
Once you start this book it is hard to put down. I really enjoyed the premise and thought that the way that things were laid out was unique and fresh! It starts off fast and keeps a steady pace the whole way. Fear built a world that was believable and I for one can't wait to see what book two has in store for the war between heaven and hell. The characters were dynamic and intriguing (including the demons). There was one big thing that was a huge surprise for me. I just didn't see it coming. I really loved that Fear did not make the demons soft in any way shape or form! They were exactly what you expect a demon to be and then some! I think that Fear ended the story in a satisfying way but also set it up for an epic start to the sequel! I say if you're looking for a unique take on angels and demons this is a book you need to grab!
I started this book yesterday and finished today and can say this is a great book for a debut for an author. It's hard to believe this is her first book, however I really enjoyed the story and the characters were flawed yet beautifully written. Jasmine is the main character and she goes through a lot in a short time and I feel like the story moved so quickly. This book is a clean read and I happen to love a lot of love but also enjoy a nice YA clean read as well and this qualifies as the latter. So I rated it 4 stars because that's my honest rating it was a great book and I enjoyed it very much and will be recommending it honestly if I could do a 4.5 I would choose that instead for this but I look forward to more from this author and if you love paranormal YA this book is for you!
I don't normally read Angel and/or Demon themed books, but the cover and description on this one really drew me in.
This story is a great take on an Angel/Demon war. The action kicks in right at the start, and keeps going all the way to the cliffhanger ending! The characters are fun, strong, and grow as the story progresses. What I like most about Jasmine, the main character, is you can really see her struggles. You can tell she was so alone, yet still presented as a strong, powerful young woman.
I thought this was a fun story. Lots of action, suspense, and some romance. I'm looking forward to the second book!
This was an absolutely enrapturing book! I absolutely adore angel/demon books and this one did not let me down! I was immediately drawn in and was feverishly reading as fast as I could to find out what would happen next! The storyline was unique and complex, the dialogue was well rounded and the characters were intricate and enthralling. With plenty of intrigue, a dash of romance and enough paranormal to satisfy my needs, this book fulfilled all my late night reading needs. I completely loved this book and can't wait to check out the sequel!!
While I really enjoyed the premise of fallen angels, a lost war between angels and demons and all of the intrigue and backstory, there was just too much that didn't feel right. I think mostly it was too much too soon. Like maybe it needed more time to build some of the relationships between the characters. I get the main pair, it's more the background players that needed work in my mind.
As an independent reviewer for Romance Authors that Rock, this made me give what was otherwise a really awesome read only four stars. I just couldn't make some of the connections feel right.
Amazing book writen by a brand new author. The story is great and has you hooked into it and the characters more and more as the book goes on. The characters are well rounded and it's great to learn more as the story goes on. Only thing I didn't like about the whole book was the author left it on a cliff hanger!!!

I love, love, love her writing. It’s a fantasy novel about this girl whose mother doesn’t care for her whatsoever, her dad being killed by a demon, her meeting a demon. She has powers that sometimes she can’t control. She can conjure blue flames and now a demon wants to take her away.
But two years later pass and she is living happily with her grandparents, but does happiness really last?
She gets in the middle of a battle with hundreds of beasts or possibly demons. She is being forced to use her powers for doing evil.
Amon is a fallen angel with an attitude—and everything to lose.

On Jasmine’s 16th birthday she watched as demon killed her father. That left her mom and her; but she unleashed her secret powers and killed him. She left to live with her grandparents only to have the demons show up en masse two years later. She helped rescue some fallen angels with her bf Beau. Now, they must band together, along with four other Angel Blessed who have their own powers. A war is coming between demons and humans. One of the fallen has taken a special interest in Jasmine as well. Lucifer is imprisoned and the demons are trying to free him. What will happen? Who will survive and die? This book is the first in a trilogy that is action packed from the beginning~ It gives the background story before the true action begins!
