Africa can be scary. And thrilling. Often, that's the same thing! Lloyd Camp takes you on an evocative journey through some of the wildest places in Africa as he re-lives colourful vignettes from his adventurous childhood and long career as a safari guide. This is a charming, funny, thoughtful and often hair-raising series of short stories that illustrate Lloyd's enthusiastic delight in leading his clients into the wilderness areas of Africa. Forthright yet light-hearted, Lloyd's suspenseful narrative emphasises both his love of the African bush and the courage and resilience of the Africans that he encounters in his odysseys. In the vein of Peter Allison's "Whatever you do, don't Run", these camp-fire tales are the perfect accompaniment to your own journey into Africa or simply as a series of highly engaging stories from the comfort of your own armchair at home.
Unfortunately this book reads more like a diary/unsophisticated memoir. This book does NOT represent "Africa" and the stories/tales/reminiscing it contains should not be classified as African Safari adventures. "Scrapes and escapes in the African bush"? Where does the author's army experience and saving someone from drowning in the ocean fit in? And yes, I do live in Africa.
Lloyd’s adventures, humorous tone and descriptive prose would convince anyone to go on safari. I returned from Namibia (where I met & braved the desert with Lloyd) and a safari in South Africa and really missed Africa when I got home. Reading these short stories about the bush solidified my own memories and helped me hold my African experiences closer. 5/5 ⭐️
Some good anecdotes in this about the "scrapes and escapes" of a safari guide in different African countries. However the last third of the book was just random bits of various happenings in the author's life, interesting but not riveting..
I thoroughly enjoyed Lloyd Camp's second book when I obviously should have read this one first but no matter. This is considerably less about safari guiding and more about his early life and all those and subsequent brushes with death
As before, this book is very well written and the descriptions are faultless - it wasn't just Mr Camp's blood that ran cold!
A break from the current series I've been binge reading. If an African safari is on your bucket list, like mine, this is for you. The author is an experienced guide and shares his many exciting stories from all over Africa, mostly as a guide but even some from his personal experiences.
totally enjoyed the book having been many times to Botswana and Kruger and Zambia
I lived every minute of this book , my husband and I grew up in South Africa and went to game reserve every chance we had. Moved to USA and started going to Botswana thru wilderness I can’t count the trips there have been so many , but if you give me a chance to be anywhere in world it’s Botswana . The stories brought back so many wonderful memories . Can’t wait to go again
The first half of the book are events with animals out on the prarie or in the jungle. The disappointment was that the second half of the book were adventures the author had in his life with friends or buddies which bored me. I wanted to read more about the fabulous animals.
I definitely enjoyed the first half of the book. I’m not sure what happened that the second half was not at all about animals or safaris. I looked back at the table of contents to make sure I hadn’t missed a clue that the book was changing gears. No matter, it was an anecdotal and witty book just with an ending I hadn’t expected. I did enjoy the pictures at the end of the book.
Must be the best wild life “camp fire” stories ever written. I am waiting on Lloyds new books to be released soon and with without hesitation buy all he writes. Africa bites captures and holds your attention from page 1. It’s a “ can’t put it down” book. I highly recommend it for old and young
This is one of the best Africa / tales of safaris that I have read so far. Very interesting and often scary, the stories make me wish I could be in Africa right now....Can't wait to read Africa Bites Twice!! Thank you Lloyd Camp for sharing your memories!
I liked this book because the author continued from chapter.. Building a story with so many adventures. It was easy to pickup and follow. Light reading. Entertaining.
Thoroughly enjoyed every word of this book. I was raised in India where our Grandparents (both male & female) hunted for sport & skin. They had tiger & various skins as rugs in their family & living rooms. Loved to lounge & sleep on them. NoshirHooty.
